  • Ruthenium is one of the noble metals having good thermal and chemical stability, low resistivity, and relatively high work function(4.71eV). Because of these good physical, chemical, and electrical properties, Ru thin films have been extensively studied for various applications in semiconductor devices such as gate electrode for FET, capacitor electrodes for dynamic random access memories(DRAMs) with high-k dielectrics such as $Ta_2O_5$ and (Ba,Sr)$TiO_3$, and capacitor electrode for ferroelectric random access memories(FRAMs) with Pb(Zr,Ti)$O_3$. Additionally, Ru thin films have been studied for copper(Cu) seed layers for Cu electrochemical plating(ECP) in metallization process because of its good adhesion to and immiscibility with Cu. We investigated Ru thin films by thermal ALD with various deposition parameters such as deposition temperature, oxygen flow rate, and source pulse time. Ru thin films were grown by ALD(Lucida D100, NCD Co.) using RuDi as precursor and $O_2$ gas as a reactant at 200~$350^{\circ}C$.

  • Glass systems based on Ca, Sr, Ba, and Zn modified alumino-boro silicates were investigated in order to improve the dielectric and mechanical properties of a typical LTCC (low temperature co-fired ceramic) which was developed for high frequency highly-integrated modules. The glass was prepared by a typical melting procedure and then mixed with cordierite fillers to fabricate glass/ceramic composite-type LTCC materials. The amount of cordierite filler was fixed at 50 volumetric%. For an optimal glass composition of 7.5% CaO, 7.5% BaO, 5% ZnO, 10% $Al_2O_3$, 30% $B_2O_3$, and 40% $SiO_2$ in mole ratio, the resultant LTCC composite showed a dielectric constant of 5.8 and a dielectric loss ($tan{\delta}$) of 0.0009 after firing at $900^{\circ}C$. An average bending strength of 160MPa was obtained for the optimal composition.

  • A composite cathode of LSCF$(La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3)\;and\;GDC\; (Gd_2O_3-doped\;CeO_2:Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_{1.95_})$ was characterized in terms of an electrode response, using a point contact in an Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte incorporated into AC two-point impedance spectroscopy. The point-contacted configuration amplifies the responses occurring near the YSZ/cathode interface through the aligned point contact on the planar LSCF/GDC electrode. The point contact interface increases the bulk resistance allowing the estimation of the point contact geometry and resolving the electrode-related responses. The resultant impedance spectra are analyzed through an equivalent circuit model constructed by resistors and constant phase elements. The bulk responses can be resolved from the electrode-related portions in terms of spreading resistance. The electrode-related polarizations are measured in terms of temperature and oxygen partial pressure. The modified impedance spectroscopy is discussed in terms of methodology and analytical aspects, toward resolving the electrode-polarization issues in solid oxide fuel cells.

  • A new rhodamine-based sensor 1 was designed and synthesized by incorporating rhodamine B and benzimidazole moieties. Sensor 1 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity to $Cu^{2+}$ in $CH_3CN$-water solution (HEPES buffer, pH = 7.0) with an obvious color change from colorless to pink. Other metal ions such as $Hg^{2+}$, $Ag^+$, $Pb^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Ba^{2+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Fe^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $Ce^{3+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Na^+$ had no such color change and have no significant influence on $Cu^{2+}$ recognition process. The interaction of $Cu^{2+}$ and sensor 1 was proven to adopt a 1:1 binding stoichiometry and the recognition process is reversible.

  • Steam reforming of n-hexadecane, a major component of diesel over Ni-based hydrotalcite-like catalyst was carried out at $900^{\circ}C$ at atmospheric pressure with space velocity of $10,000h^{-1}$ and feed molar ratio of steam/carbon=3.0. Ni-based hydrotalcite catalyst was prepared by a solid phase crystallization (spc) method and characterized by $N_2$-physisorption, CO chemisorption, TPR., XRD, and TEM techniques. It was found that spc Ni/MgAl catalyst showed higher catalytic stability and inhibition of carbon formation than Ni/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalyst under the tested conditions. The results suggest that the modified spc-Ni/MgAl catalyst after optimization may be applied for the SR reaction of diesel.

  • The electrochemically active site of mixed ionic and electronic conductor (MIEC) as a cathode material is restricted to the triple phase boundary in protonic ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) due to the insufficient of proton-conducting properties of MIEC. This study primarily focused on expanding the electrochemically active site by La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ(LSCF6428)-BaZr0.4Ce0.4Y0.1Yb0.1O3-δ (BZCYYb4411) composite cathode. The electrochemical properties of the composite cathode were evaluated using anode-supported PCFC single cells. In comparison to the LSCF6428 cathode, the peak power density of the LSCF6428-BZCYYb4411 composite cathode is much enhanced by the reduction in both ohmic and non-ohmic resistance, possibly due to the increased electrochemically active site.

  • Petrochemical analyses of granitic rocks including trace element, REE and oxygen isotope were carried out to understand petrogenesis of plutonic rocks from the Chungju, Wolaksan and Jecheon granite batholiths, which might be related with tungsten-base metal-fluorite mineralization in the Hwanggangri metallogenic province. Different geochemical characteristics such as major and trace elements were found between Jurassic Daebo granitic rocks (Chungju, Jecheon, Wonju, and Boeun granitic rocks) and Cretaceous Bulgugsa granitic rocks (Wolaksan, Muamsa and Sokrisan granitic rocks). Cretaceous granitoids are characterized by high $SiO_2$and $K_2O$ contents and low $TiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO and CaO contents. They also have relatively high contents of trace elements(Zn, V, Co, Cr, Sr, and Ba) in comparison with the Jurassic granitoids. (Eu)/($Eu^*$) and $(La/Lu)_{CN}$ ratios of Jurassic plutons vary from 0.78 to 1.13 and from 26.02 to 30.5, respectively, while the ratios of Cretaceous ones range from 0.22 to 0.28 and from 4.42 to 14.2, respectively. The REE patterns of the Cretaceous and Jurassic granitic rocks have quite different Eu anomalies: large negative Eu anomaly in the former, and mild or absent Eu anomaly in the latter. The large Eu negative of Cretaceous granitic rocks are interpreted as a differentiated product of fractional crystallization of granitic magma deduced by Rayleigh fractionation model(Tsusue et al., 1987). Oxygen isotopic compositions of quartz for Daebo and Bulgugsa granitic rocks range from 9.98 to 10.51‰ and from 8.26 to 9.56‰, respectively. The Daebo granitic rocks enriched in $^{18}0$ suggest that the magma be undergone different partial melting processes from the Bulgugsa ones. Of the Bulgugsa granitoids, Wolaksan and Sokrisan mass have different contents of trace elements and ${\delta}\;^{18}0$ values of the silicate minerals, which indicate that they are not from the identical source of magma. Many mineral deposits are distributed in and/or near the Wolaksan and Muamsa granitic rocks, but a few mineral deposits are found in and near the Chungju and Jecheon granite batholiths. It might be depend on geochemisty of the related igneous rocks which have low contents of Ba, Sr, Co, V, Cr, Ni, Zn and high contents of Nb and Y, and on lithology of country rocks such as cabonate and noncarbonate rocks.

  • Nakdong River Plain and its adjoining sea arc unusually covered by very thick soft clay sediments which were caned Pusan clays, sometimes reaching 40-70m. Since early 1990s a large number of geotechnical investigations have been carried out for land reclamation works in the area, including Busan city and its neighboring cities. Nevertheless, geotechnical engineers have paid little attention to studying geological characteristics on the clays, except some researches related to mineralogy, geo-chemistry, benthic foraminiferal fauna etc. The purpose of reserach is the knowledge of the correlation between engineering properties and mineralogy of clay sediments. The correlation analysis carry out multiple regression that have independent variables (Engineering properties) and dependent variables (mineralogy, geochemistry). Engineering properties of clay are correlated with the mineral compositions and geochemical characteristics. • We developed an ultra low background gamma ray spectrometer particularly suitable for experiment which require lower detection limit. The background of a germanium spectrometer is suppressed by applying active and passive shielding technique at the same time. The active shielding devices consist of plastic scintillating plates of 50 mm thick and anti-coincidence electronic system. The shielding is made of 150 mm thick walls of very low activity lead,20 mm with activity of <10 Bq/kg and 130 mm with activity of <50 Bq/kg. The observed background count rates are 1.2 $s^{-1}$ and 0.36 $s^{-1}$ without and with the active shielding, respectively, overall the energy regions from 30 keV to 3 MeV The cosmic ray induced background is suppressed by a rate of 0.8 $s^{-1}$ at the present work. The detection efficiency curve necessary to obtain the radioactivity of environmental samples has been precisely determined on the energy regions from 80 to 2000 keV with a 10$^3$ ml marinelli beaker sample, consisting of the calibrated radionuclides $^{109}$ Cd, $^{57}$ CO, $^{139}$ Ce, $^{203}$ Hg, $^{113}$ Sn, $^{85}$Sr, $^{137}$ Cs, $^{60}$ Co and $^{88}$ Y. Virtues Of the method are demonstrated by measuring the activity of $^{137}$ Cs contained in the powdered milk.

  • Several pyrophyllite deposits occur around the Milyang area where Cretaceous andesitic rocks and spatially related granitic rocks are widely distributed. Pyrophyllite ores consist mainly of pyrophyllite, and quartz with small amount of sericite, pyrite, dumortierite, and diaspore. The andesitic rocks and spatially related granitic rocks in this area suggest that they could be formed from the same series of a calc-alkaline magma series. The contents of $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, LOI(loss on ignition) are enriched, and $K_2O$, $Na_2O$, CaO, MgO, $Fe_2O_3$ are depleted in altered andesitic rocks and ores. Enrichment of As, Cr, Sr, V, Sb and depletion of Ba, Cs, Ni, Rb, U, Y, Co, Sc, Zn are characteristic during mineralization. The pyrophyllite ores can be discriminated from the altered-and unaltered wall-rocks by an increasing of $(La/Lu)_{cn}$ from 4.18~22.13 to 8.98~55.05. In R-mode cluster analysis, Yb-Lu-Y, La-Ce-Hf-Th-U-Zr, $TiO_2-V-Al_2O_3$, Sm-Eu, $CaO-Na_2O-MnO$, Cu-Zn-Ag, $K_2O-Rb$ are closely correlated. In the discriminant analysis of multi-element data, $P_2O_5$, As, Cr and $Fe_2O_3$, Sr are helpful to identify the ores from the unaltered-and altered wall-rocks. In the factor analysis, the factors of alteration of andesitic rocks and ore mineralization were extracted. In the change of ions per unit volume, $SiO_2$, $Al^{3+}$ and LOI are enriched and $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Mn^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ are depleted during the alteration processes. The Milyang and the Sungjin pyrophyllite deposits could be mineralized by hydrothermal alteration in a geochemical condition of low activity ratio of alkaline ions to hydrogen ion with reference to spatially related granitic rocks.
