  • The present contribution describes the application of elliptic-blending second moment closure to predict the gas cooling process of turbulent super-critical carbon dioxide flow in a square cross-sectioned duct. The gas cooling process under super-critical state experiences a drastic change in thermodynamic and transport properties. Redistributive terms in the Reynolds stress and turbulent heat flux equations are modeled by an elliptic-blending second moment closure in order to represent strongly non-homogeneous effects produced by the presence of walls. The main feature of Durbin's elliptic relaxation second moment closure that accounts for the nonlocal character of pressure-velocity gradient correlation and the near-wall inhomogeneity guaranteed by the elliptic blending second moment closure.

  • Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.

  • Velocities and Reynolds stresses in 3-dimensional turbulent flow in rectangular ducts with a 180.deg. bend were measured by hot wire anemometer. Slant wire was rotated to 4 directions and I type wire was rotated to 2 directions and the voltage outputs of them were combined to obtain the mean velocities and Reynolds stresses. Flow characteristics in the 1.5:1 and 2:1 cross secioned 180.deg. bend were measured and the results were compared with the data from Moon for the square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow. Flows in rectangular sectioned 180.deg. bend show the reduction in secondary flow and therefore the reduction of double maximum in local mean velocities.

  • Laser chemical vapor deposition can be an effective technique for a rapid prototyping with ceramic materials, in particular. The objective of the study is to fabricate several 3-dimensional objects by stacking multi-layers as well as to find out some basic aspects of a rapid prototyping with laser chemical vapor deposition such as deposition characteristics with traversing speed of the laser, possible problems in stacking multi-layers etc. The limit speed of the laser that can grow a tilted SiC rod was found in this study, and laser directing writing that occurs over the limit speed was also investigated. Finally, a zigzag-shaped rod, a spiral-shaped rod, a wall and a square duct were successfully fabricated with laser chemical vapor deposition of tetramethylsilane

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the flame structure and propagation mechanism in dust explosions and to provide the fundamental knowledge. Upward propagating laminar dust flames in a vertical duct of 1.8 m height and 0.15 m square cross-section are observed and flame front is visualized using by a high-speed video camera. Also, the thicknesses of preheated and reaction zone have been determined by a schlieren, electrostatic probe and thermocouple. The thickness of preheated zone in lycopodium dust flame is observed to be 4~13 mm, about several orders of magnitude higher than that of premixed gaseous flames. From the experimental results by a PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) system, a certain residence time of the unburned particle in preheated zone is needed to generate combustible gas from the particle. The residence time will depend on preheated zone thickness, particle velocity and flame propagation velocity.

  • This study is focused on reliability based design optimization (RBDO) using moving least squares. A response surface is used to derive a limit-state equation for reliability based design optimization. Response surface method (RSM) with least square method (LSM) or Kriging will be used as a response surface. RSM is fast to make the response surface. On the other hand, RSM has disadvantage to make the response surface of nonlinear equation. Kriging can make the response surface in nonlinear equation precisely but needs considerable amount of computations. The moving least square method (MLSM) is made of both methods (RSM with LSM+Kriging). Numerical results by MLSM are compared with those by LMS in Rosenbrock function and six-hump carmel back function. The RBDO of engine duct of smart UAV is pursued in this paper. It is proved that RBDO is useful tool for aerospace structural optimal design problems.

  • The present study investigates in detail the combined effects of the Coriolis and centrifugal farce on the development of laminar flows in a square-sectioned U-bend rotating about an axis parallel to the center of bend curvature. When a viscous fluid flows through a rotating curved region, two types of secondary flow occur. One is caused by the Coriolis force due to the rotation of U-bend and the other by the centrifugal farce due to the curvature of U-bend. When the values of Rossby number and curvature ratio are large, the flow field in a rotating U-bend can be represented by two dimensionless parameters ; the Dean number K$\_$LC/=Re/√λ and a body ratio F=λ/Po. For positive rotation, where the rotation is in the same direction as that of the main flow, both the Coriolis force and the centrifugal force act radially outwards, the directions of the two secondary flows are the same. Therefore, the flow structure is qualitatively similar to that observed in a stationary curved duct with a larger f7c. On the other hand, in case of negative rotation, where two farces act in opposite direction, more complex flow fields can be observed depending on the relative magnitudes of the forces.

  • Local heat/mass transfer and friction loss in a square duct roughened with various types of continuous and discrete rib turbulators are investigated. The combined effects of the gap flows of the discrete ribs and the secondary flows are examined for the purpose of the reduction of thermally weak regions and the promotion of the uniformity of heat/mass transfer distributions as well as the augmentation of average heat/mass transfer. The rib-to-rib pitch to the rib height ratio (p/e) of 8 and the rib angles of 90 and 60 deg are selected with $e/D_{h}=0.08$. The vortical structure of the secondary flows induced by the parallel angled arrays are quite distinct from that induced by the cross angled arrays. This distinction influences on heat/mass transfer and friction loss in all the tested cases. The gap flows of the discrete ribs reduce the strength of the secondary flows but promote local turbulence and flow mixing. As a result, the fairly uniform heat/mass transfer distributions are obtained with two row gaps.

  • The carbon dioxide properties change sharply near the critical or pseudo-critical point in the heat transfer processes. The reduction in turbulent, convective heat transfer parameters observed in some supercritical data and in experiments with common gases can be due to property variation, acceleration, buoyancy or combinations of these phenomena, depending on the conditions of the applications. In this study, the measurement for the secondary flow driven by buoyancy was carried out on the supercritical carbon dioxide turbulent flows in the different boundary condition with the constant mass flow rate. The available measuring techniques were used to clarify the behaviour of any supercritical fluid. Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) and a special device was used to measure the secondary velocity and turbulent characteristics of the supercritical flows.
