  • One-hour average concentrations of ground-level ozone from around 80 monitoring stations in Korea during 1991 to 1993 were analyzed to examine characteristics of the ozone concentration variations. Two types of variations were observed: one was for the Capital area typified by Kwanghwmun, and the other was for the south and east seashore region typified by Tongkwangyang. In the Capital area including Seoul, Inchon, Kyonggi-do and Chunchon, mean daily 1-hout maximum was the highest in June following high monthly averages in spring. But frequent precipitation prevented further rise of daily maximum in July and August even though there were frequent episodes of high concentration exceeding 100ppb. In the south and east seashore region, average concentration was the highest throughout the year, and daily maximum and minimum simultaneously changed owing to small contributions from photochemical reactions. The typical annual variation was spring peak, summer down, and fall rise. Spring peak accompanied an usual observations of background variations at remote sites in the Northern Hemisphere. Riess of average and daily maximum with lower daily minimum in fall were attributable to photochemical reactions.

  • A modified thermal noise method was proposed to measure the normal spring constants of the colloidal probes for an atomic force microscope. We used commercial tipless cantilevers (length 150, width 30, nominal k 7.4 N/m) and borosilicate spheres with a diameter of 20 to fabricate colloidal probes. The inverse optical lever sensitivity of both the tipless cantilever and colloidal probes were used to measure the normal spring constant of the colloidal probes. We confirmed the accuracy and usefulness of our method by comparing the measurement results with those obtained using the nanoforce calibrator (NFC), which reportedly has an uncertainty of 1.00%. The modified thermal method showed a good agreement (~10% difference) with the NFC, allowing us to conclude that the modified thermal method could be employed for the effective measurement of the normal spring constants of colloidal probes.

  • In this study, the two methods of stiffness measurement(Spring constant) of cantilever were proposed for quantitative measurement in Atomic Force Microscopy(AFM). As the 1st method for the measurement of stiffness, the probe method, which is used in the measurement of the semiconductor mechanical and electrical properties, was applied to the measurement of the cantilever. Experiments by the probe method were performed finding the resistance value of cantilever. As the results, the resistance was measured differently along with the dimension and the thickness of cantilever that determined the stiffness(spring constant) of the lever. As the 2nd method, the vibration characteristics(Dunkerley expression) is used to obtain the stiffness of the complex structure which is combined by AFM cantilever and the standard cantilever. We measured the resonant frequency from the complex structure using the micro stages and stereo microscope. As the results, we confirmed that the vibration characteristics(Dunkerley expression) is effected the micro complex structure of AFM cantilever.

  • This paper presents a case study on the tribological failure analysis of a clutch system for a manual transmission car. The clutch systems are composed of clutch disk, clutch pressure plate, flywheel rubbing surface, coil and diaphragm springs, release bearing and lever, clutch spline and shaft. The purpose of a clutch system is to transmit and disconnect the driving power of engines by frictional farce from a rubbing surface of a flywheel to a clutch disk and clutch pressure plate with a minimum power loss. In this study, many tribological failure cases based on the wear phenomena and thermal distortions have been presented, which are collected from the car repair shop and maintenance center. The triboiogicai failures are mostly come from the driving conditions, overloading of a car, and especially driving style and personal habit of a car driver.

  • Persimmon occupied the second largest cultivation area next to apple among the fruits in Korea. Since 70 % of its cultivating field is located at slope, the efficiency of its harvesting operation is very low. Also, the traditional high-ground trimmer show very low efficiency due to its structure problem.. In this paper, a high-ground trimmer which is a persimmon cultivator was developed by solving the problem of a traditional high ground trimmer. The results of the research are summarized as follows : 1. In case of the developed hydraulic type high ground trimmer, the required average lever tension is 2.9 N. 2. However, the required average tension force of the existing spring type is 25.5 N, which was 8.7 times greater than developed hydraulic lever type trimmer in this study.

  • During high speed sewing, the needle thread is exposed to dynamic loading, short strike loading, inertia forces, friction, rubbing, force of check spring, bending, pressure, friction, impact, shock and thermal influence. The dynamic thread loading/tension alters throughout the stitch formation cycle and along its passage through the machine. The greatest tensile force occurs at the moment of stitch stretching, when the take up lever pulls for required thread length through the tension regulator. These stresses act on the thread repeatedly and the thread passes 50-80 times through the fabric, the needle eye and the bobbin case mechanism, before getting incorporated into the seam, which result in upto 40% loss in tensile strength of the sewing thread. This damage in the sewing thread adversely affects its processing and functional performance. In this paper, the contribution of dynamic loading, passage through needle and fabric, and bobbin thread interaction in the loss in tensile properties has been studied. It is observed that the loss in tensile properties occurs mainly due to the bobbin thread interaction. Dynamic loading due to the action of take up lever also causes substantial loss in tenacity and breaking elongation of cotton threads.

  • There is an indispensable need for force calibration for quantitative nanoscale force measurement using atomic force microscopy. Calibrating the normal force is relatively straightforward, whereas doing so for the lateral force is often complicated because of the difficulty in determining the optical lever sensitivity. In particular, the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment often has a larger uncertainty as a result of the effects of the epoxy, the location of the colloidal particle on the cantilever, and a decrease in the quality factor. In this work, the lateral force of a colloidal probe using a reference cantilever with a known spring constant was calibrated in a liquid environment. By obtaining the spring constant and the lateral sensitivity at the equator of a spherical colloidal particle, the damage to the bottom surface of the colloidal particle could be eliminated. Further, it was shown that the effect of the contact stiffness on the determination of the lateral spring constant of the cantilever could be minimized. It was concluded that this method can be effectively used for the lateral force calibration of a colloidal probe in a liquid environment.

  • Micro-weighing device by using null balance method is being essential part in fields of high-technology industries such as precision semiconductor industry, precision chemistry, biotechnology and genetics etc. Also, requirements for high resolution and for large measurement range increase more and more. The performance of the micro-weighing device can be determined by the mechanism design and analysis. The analytical design method has been proposed for the performance improvement such as resolution, measurement range and fast response. The 2-stage displacement amplification is designed to overcome the limit of conventional force transmitting lever. The parallel spring is designed for the measurement result independent of the input force position variation. Also, the natural frequency of mechanism is analyzed for the fast response. After each analysis, optimal design has been carried out. To verify the analysis and design result, characteristics experiments had been carried out after construction. Finally, the system had been controlled.

  • Compared to other types of power, hydraulic energy is the most commonly used for heavy vehicles and ships because it has fewer location and space constraints, and its controllability can be maintained even under adverse conditions. Operators have controlled a main control valve of ship winches by pushing or pulling the lever, which is directly connected to the spool. However, because of the spatial arrangement, the importance of remote control valves has emerged. In this paper, experiments of the hysteresis characteristics were performed by analyzing the remote-control valve using a valve tester and RA2300. The validity was verified by comparing with the analytical model using SimulationX as the hydraulic analysis program. This study examined the effects of the spool's notch (Non, End-mill, and Spherical) and the effects of stiffness and pre-load of the spool spring on Spool stroke, open area, and hysteresis characteristics. It is considered possible to reduce the cost and the, trial and error process in designing remote-control valves in the future.

  • ATM(Automated-Teller Machine) is a maching that receives and pays money directly. The gate module of an ATM separates forgeries from bills and changes the transfer direction of bills. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the gate was analyzed numerically and experimentally. The moment of inertia of the gate lever, the suction force of the solenoid and the spring force were measured respectively. And the displacements of the plunger, the vibration of the bracket, the input voltage and current were measured experimentally. The measured dynamic behaviors were simulated numerically using SAMCEF program, which can accommodate the kinematics and vibrations of flexible bodies. Through the analysis, the design factors were found to make a fast and reliable new ATM machine.
