  • In South Korea, the north border area has been under vivax malaria epidemic since 1993. However, Jeollabuk-do, which is about 300 kms from the border, has not experienced the same epidemic. 1 investigated a total of 58 notified cases of malaria in Jeollabuk-do in the year 2000. All of the cases had an exposure history in the epidemic area. Among them were 49 ex-soldiers, 3 soldiers who served near the border area and 6 civilians who traveled there. The causal agent of all cases was Plasmodium vivax. Except the civilians, the soldiers and ex-soldiers were aged in their twenty's. In the present study, the incubation period was from 6 to 520 days with a median of 157 days, and the latent onset type (92%) was more prevalent than the early onset type. illness onset of most cases (86%) peaked during the summer season (June to September) despite of variable incubation periods. The time lag for diagnosis ranged from 2 to 42 days with a median of 11 days. Jeollabuk-do has not been an area of epidemic untill now, but incidences have been increasing annually since 1996. In Jeollabuk-do, early diagnosis and treatment can be a feasible disease control measure to prevent spreading from the epidemic area.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the distribution and their change of Pinus densiflora forests by climate change in Mt. Hallasan. The results showed that the areas of P. densiflora forests of Mt. Hallasan varied by region, with a total area of 1,324.3 ha, concentrated mostly in the region 1,000 m - 1,400 m above sea level. The temperate coniferous forest zone are distributed in the upper part of temperate forest zone composed of deciduous broad-leaved trees. Most of the P. densiflora forests in the lower parts were found not to be spreading because they are located close to the deciduous broad-leaved trees. However, the P. densiflora forests in the Sajebi and Pyeonggwe regions composed of the grasslands and shrub forests were found to be spreading. In addition, the altitude of the P. densiflora forests distribution increased by about 50 m and 90 m in the Sajebi and Pyeonggwe regions, respectively. The spread rate is expected to become faster than in the past due to the rate of climate change. The structure of the vegetation in Mt. Hallasan and the changes in the vegetation due to various factors need to be investigated from a long-term point of view.

  • There are many parameters in prediction of forest fire spread. The variables such as fuel moisture, fuel loading, wind velocity, wind direction, relative humidity, slope, and solar aspect have important effects on fire. Particularly, wind and slope factors are considered to be the most important parameters in propagation of forest fire. Generally, slope effect cause different wind distribution in mountain area. However, this effect is disregarded in complex geometry. In this paper, wind is estimated by applying computational fluid dynamics to the forest geometry. Wind velocity data is obtained by using CFD code with Newtonian model and slope is calculated with geometrical data. These data are applied fer 2-dimentional forest fire spreading algorithm with Korean ROS(Rate Of Spread). Finally, the comparison between the simulation and the real forest fire is made. The algorithm spread of forest fire will help fire fighter to get the basic data far fire suppression and the prediction to behavior of forest fire.

  • This paper describes a natural frequency analysis conducted to find out a suitable working area for a spring-manipulator system generating a large vibrating force with mechanical resonance. Large force generation is one of the functions that we hope for a robot. For example, a weeding robot is required to generate a large force, because some weeds have roots spreading deeply and tightly. The spring-manipulator system has a spring element as an end-effector, so it can be in a state of resonance with the elasticity of the spring element and the inertial characteristics of the manipulator. A force generation method utilizing the mechanical resonance has potential to produce a large force that cannot be realized by a static method. A method for calculating a natural frequency of a spring-manipulator system with the generalized inertia tensor is proposed. Then the suitable working area for the spring-manipulator system is identified based on a natural frequency analysis. If a spring-manipulator system operates in the suitable working area, it can sustain mechanical resonance and generate a large vibrating force. Moreover, it is shown that adding a mass at the tip of the manipulator expands the suitable working area.

  • The 'Silt Pond' is 180 hectares in size and contained ultra soft slurry-like soil varying between 3 to 20 meters in thickness. Soil improvement work in the Silt Pond commenced by installing vertical drains in the mid of 1996, following completion of sand spreading up to +4.0m CD. Prior to soil improvement work in the main area of Silt Pond, experimental tests including laboratory tests with a large diameter consolidation cell and pilot tests were carried out to investigate the deformation behavior of an extremely soft soil. Due to its high compressibility, large strain usually occurred in the initial stage of deformation does not comply with Terzaghi's one dimensional consolidation theory. Taking into consideration experimental test results, the soil improvement works were carried out in main area of Silt Pond containing ultra soft soil. This paper presents the case study on improvement of ultra-soft soil.

  • This study was conducted laboratory flume tests to identify landslide features and flow characteristics of debris using a flume test equipment. Under the several test conditions dependent on rainfall intensity and slope angle, the authors measured pore water pressure, slope failure and displacement, spreading area of debris on a regular time interval. The test processes were also recorded by video cameras and digital still cameras. According to the test results, pore water pressures have trends of direct proportion to the rainfall intensity and the slope angle, resulting in high potential of landslide triggering. The spreading area of debris is also increased with the slope angle and the rainfall intensity as well as the rainfall duration.

  • Recently, The range of Internet based information environment is spreading over core business area, as well as simple information provision area. Especially, with spreading WWW technology, markup language based technology is emerging as an important part in Internet based business. But, the data made by SGML can only see by using SGML Browser, so it has some problem in information providing at Internet, and compatibility of data between Data source. So, this study suggests essential architecture and technique for migrating from SGML to XML environment. In our study, we use 600MB SGML data that are selected from 3Tera DataBase of SGML as testing target for migration. We can reduce data displaying time after migration, can do mobile computing which is based on Internet as a result of this study. And the same technique and idea that is used in this study can apply to more large SGML Environment without changing. So, It will be very helpful to the reader who is interesting to migrate from SGML doc to XML doc.

  • Forage barley was developed for decreasing the import of forages, and increasing the farmer' income about ten years ago. Nevertheless of higher of farmer' income, the forage barley' area is slowly increased because of lacking of barely seeds. In order to suggest the plan of the urgent spreading on forage barley, the seed-gathering of forage barley was cultivated on 14-provinces and 291ha on 2009. The cultivation area of kyeungnam, kyeungbuk and chunnam province was more than other provence. The youngyang cultivar was cultivated more than orher cultivar. Seed-gathering amount of Youngyang, Uhoo and Yooyun cultiva was 364,213 and 303MT respectively. There were several problems for seed-gathering of forage barley which were the delay of seeding time and the more seeding amount, and the higher seed drying temperature than that of standard manual.
