The flow characteristics of a swirl injector were investigated with the variation of the flow condition and geometric dimensions, such as orifice length for considering the viscous effect and tangential entry port area for considering the swirl intensity. The liquid film thickness strongly influencing on the formed drop size of the spray was measured using a new technique. The film thickness measurement technique proposed here, used the attenuation of fluorescence signal near the injector exit. The breakup length that is important for the flame location as well as the spray cone angle which influences on the ignition performance was measured using a backlit stroboscopic photography technique. From the experimental results, it is found that an increase in injection pressure decreased the film thickness and breakup length, and also enlarged the spray cone angle. A decrease in orifice length and tangential entry port area has a similar tendency of thinner film thickness, shorter breakup length and larger spray cone angle. In the present study, we proposed empirical models of the flow characteristics of the swirl injectors.

A throttleable rocket engine enables operational possibilities such as the docking of spacecraft, maneuvering in a certain orbit and landing on a planet's surface, altitude control, and entrance to atmosphere-less planets. Thus, throttling methods have long been researched. However, dual-manifold injectors, which represent one throttling method, have been investigated less than others. In this study, dual-manifold and single-manifold injectors were compared to determine the characteristics of dual-manifold injectors. Also, the effects of gas injection were investigated with various F/O ratios. To investigate the characteristics, mass flow rate, spray pattern, spray angle, and droplet size were measured. The spray angle and droplet size were captured by indirect photography. About 30 images were taken to assess the spray patterns and spray angle. Also, 700 images were analyzed to understand the droplet distribution and targeting area, moving to the right from the centerline with 1.11-cm intervals. The droplet size was obtained from an image processing procedure. From the results, the spray angle showed two transition regions, due to swirl momentum in the swirl chamber regardless of the F/O ratio. The droplet size showed similar trends in both dual-manifold and single-manifold injectors except in the low mass flow rate region. In the case of the dual- manifold injector, the spray cone was not fully developed in the low mass flow rate region due to low angular momentum in the swirl chamber.
The effects of different spray angles (90°, 85°, 80°) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a Y2O3 coating layer prepared using the atmospheric plasma spray (APS) process were studied. The powders employed in this study had a spherical shape and included a cubic Y2O3 phase. The APS coating layer exhibited the same phase as the powders. Thickness values of the coating layers were 90°: 203.7 ± 8.5 ㎛, 85°: 196.4 ± 9.6 ㎛, and 80°: 208.8 ± 10.2 ㎛, and it was confirmed that the effect of the spray angle on the thickness was insignificant. The porosities were measured as 90°: 3.9 ± 0.85%, 85°: 11.4 ± 2.3%, and 80°: 12.7 ± 0.5%, and the surface roughness values were 90°: 5.9 ± 0.3 ㎛, 85°: 8.5 ± 1.1 ㎛, and 80°: 8.5 ± 0.4 ㎛. As the spray angle decreased, the porosity increased, but the surface roughness did not show a significant difference. Vickers hardness measurements revealed values of 90°: 369.2 ± 22.3, 85°: 315.8 ± 31.4, and 80°: 267.1 ± 45.1 HV. It was found that under the condition of a 90° angle with the lowest porosity exhibited the best hardness value. Based on the aforementioned results, an improved method for the APS Y2O3 coating layer was also discussed.
Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been used as motor fuel due to its low emissions and low cost. A liquid direct injection system into a cylinder was suggested as a next generation system to maximize a fuel economy as well as a power. This study addresses the analysis of the LPG spray injecting from single hole injector. Two different test conditions are given, which are a fully developed spray case with various injection pressures and a developing spray case with ambient pressure variation. The LPG spray photographs are compared with the sprays of gasoline and diesel fuel at the same conditions, and the spray angles and penetration lengths are also compared, and then the spray behavior is analyzed. The LPG spray photos show that the dispersion characteristic depends very sensitively on the ambient pressure soon after injection. The spray angle is very wide in a low ambient pressure condition until the saturated pressure, but the angle is quickly reduced at the condition over the pressure. However, the down stream of the LPG spray shows much wider dispersion and less penetration than those of gasoline and diesel sprays regardless ambient pressure condition.
The purpose of this study is to analyze spray and evaporation characteristics of DME fuel at the high pressure and temperature. For the numerical analysis of dimethyl ether(DME) fuel spray characteristics, hybrid breakup model was applied to the DME spray and its breakup process. In order to obtain experimental results for comparison with the predicted ones, the visualization of the spray evolution process was executed by using a Nd:YAG laser. Also, the numerical investigation was conducted by the two hybrid models for primary and secondary breakup of the DME spray. The primary breakup model was used the Kelvin-Helmholtz(KH) breakup model. In the secondary breakup process, Rayleigh-Taylor(RT) and Drop Deformation Breakup(DDB) model was applied. The results of this study provide the macroscopic characteristics of the spray such as spray tip penetration and cone angle, and prediction accuracy of the two hybrid model.
Fuel spray characteristics of the gasoline engine injector has been studied experimentally. To provide fundamental performance data of 4-hole and 12-hole injectors, spray fuel-mass distribution, wall wetting fuel amount and visualization of injectors have been tested and measured with various fuel supply pressure conditions. Spray visualization has been performed to analyze spray formation, spray angle, stream width and penetration length. Test result shows that wall wetting is greatly influenced by the induction air amount and spray atomization. Spray visualization shows that the 12-hole injector has robust performance characteristics with various fuel supply pressure conditions compared with the 4-hole injector. 4-hole injector generates relatively less wall-wetting fuel amount than 12-hole injector does.
The characteristics of the breakup process in supercritical spray is investigated during the injection of supercritical sulfur hexafluoride into dissimilar gases at supercritical pressures and subcritical temperature of the injected fluid. The visualization techniques used are backlighting and shadowgraph methods. The spray angles are measured and the breakup and mixing process are observed at near and supercritical conditions. The results show that spray angles are decreased with the in..ease of the ratio of density $(\frac{\rho_f}{\rho_g})$. At the supercritical temperature, the spray angles in atomization region are kept nearly constant such as the typical spray angle in gas injection. The mixing process is changed radically at the temperature where $\frac{d\rho}{dT}=\frac{1}{2}[\frac{d\rho}{dT}]_{max}$ at given pressure.
In the pressure swirl atomizer, the liquid is injected through tangential passages into a swirl chamber, from which it emerges with both tangential and axial velocity components to form a thin conical sheet at the nozzle exit. This sheet rapidly attenuates, finally disintegrating into ligaments and then drops. The purpose of this study is to measure the spray characteristics according to variation of viscosity of the spray produced by the pressure swirl atomizer. The nozzle tested here were especially designed for this investigation. The discharge coefficient is determined by measuring the volume flow rate with a flow meter and the cone angle of the liquid sheets issuing from the nozzle is obtained from series of photographs of the sheet for various liquid viscosity and injection pressure. And mean drop size is measured by image processing method. It is found that the geometrical characteristics of the nozzle and the variation of viscosity were the influential parameters to determine the spray characteristics such as the cone angle, discharge coefficients and SMD.

The objective of this work is to study the improvement of etching characteristics in wet etching process. The etching characteristics such as etching factor were investigated under different etching conditions and compared with the spray characteristics. The spray characteristics of nozzle with different geometries such as swirler angle and swirl chamber aspect ratio were analyzed by using PDA system to predict the effect of the spray characteristics on the etching factor. The swirler angles were 49,5$^{\circ}$, 63$^{\circ}$ and 76.5$^{\circ}$. The swirl chamber aspect ratios were 1.2, 1.6 and 2.0. It was found that the etching factor was correlated with the spray characteristics and also the smaller swiller angle, the larger etching factor became.
The low frequency combustion instability phenomena generated by pressure drop oscillation such as propellant shake in feed line are studied. To generate the flowrate oscillation by the pressure pulsation up to 400Hz without flow discontinuities and cavitations, a hydrodynamic mechanical pulsator of rotating disk type was produced. Injection pressure conditions are 5, 7 and 9 bar and pressure fluctuation frequency conditions are 0, 4, 6 and 8 Hz. When the injection pressure was oscillated by a mechanical pulsator, the spray shape was pulsated regularly. During the pulsated state of the spray with a mechanical pulsator, the spray characteristics, such as spray angle and liquid film thickness in orifice exit, were measured and compared with those in steady state without a mechanical pulsator. Though the mean injection pressure was fixed in the steady and fluctuating state, there were some differences in all measured values, i.e. liquid film thickness and spray cone angle, between both states.
