Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) has been recently developed and widely used because it has the advantage of being able to measure surface deformations of engineering components and materials in industrial areas without contact. The speckle patterns formed with interference and scattering phenomena can measure not only the out-of-plane but also the in-plane deformations. Digital image equipment processes the information included in the speckle patterns and displays the consequent interferogram on a computer monitor. In this study, the experimental results of a canti-levered plate using ESPI were compared with those obtained from the simple beam theory. The ESPI results of the canti-levered plate, analyzed by 4-step phase shifting method, are close to the theoretical expectation. Similarly, out-of-plane displacements of a spot welded canti-levered plate were also measured by ESPI with 4-step phase shifting technique. The phase map of the spot welded canti-levered plate is quite different from that of the canti-levered plate without spot welding.
The laser welding in the automotive industries has been used widely for the butt joint of blank sheets rather than the lap joint of automotive body panels. But as a substitute far the spot welding of automotive body panels, the so called three dimensional laser welding will be important far the body panel engineers. Specially the laser welding of body panels with a smooth weld line is applied increasingly, for example, to the side panels. So far, some criteria of the laser weld quality was suggested by in-house regulations or national standards from experiences and/or rule of thumbs. In the manufacturing places, a go or no-go criterion is adopted because of the simplicity or a lack of rational criteria. It is true specially for the selection of the process parameters, which gives the basic causes for the good quality of laser welds. In this study, the effects of joint combination, gap and welding speed on the lap joint $CO_2$ laser welding of two mild steel sheets with different thicknesses are obtained through a $2{\times}3{\times}7$ factorial experiment. The results of the weld quality are statistically analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and compared between two characteristic zones, which are separated by the type of sectional shapes and the level of input energy per volume. The thickness combinations are 0.8mm/1.2mm, 1.2mm/0.8mm of mild steel sheets. The welding speed covers from the deep penetration to the partial penetration. The gap size has three levels of no-gap, 0.16m, and 0.26mm. The bead width, penetration depth and input energy per volume are measured and used as the weld quality criteria.

This study was performed to investigate types and formation mechanism of cracks in two Al alloy welds, A5083 and A7NO1 spot-welded by pulse Nd: YAG laser, using SEM, EPMA and Micro-XRD. In the weld zone, three types of crack were observed: center line crack($C_{C}$), diagonal crack($C_{D}$), and U shape crack($C_{U}$). Also, HAZ crack($C_{H}$), was observed in the HAZ region, furthermore, mixing crack($C_{M}$), consisting of diagonal crack and HAZ crack was observed.White film was formed at the hot crack region in the fractured surface after it was immersed to 10%NaOH water. In the case of A5083 alloy, white films in C crack and $C_D crack region were composed of low melting phases, Fe₂Si$Al_8$ and eutectic phases, Mg₂Al₃ and Mg₂Si. Such films observed near HAZ crack were also consist of eutectic Mg₂Al₃. In the case of A7N01 alloy, eutectic phases of CuAl₂, $Mg_{32}$ (Al,Zn) ₃, MgZn₂, Al₂CuMg and Mg₂Si were observed in the whitely etched films near $C_{C}$ crack and $C_{D}$ crack regions. The formation of liquid films was due to the segregation of Mg, Si, Fe in the case of A5083 alloy and Zn, Mg, Cu, Si in the case of A7N01 aooly, respectively. The $C_{D}$ and $C_{C}$ cracks were regarded as a result of the occurrence of tensile strain during the welding process. The formation of $C_{M}$ crack is likely to be due to the presence of liquid film at the grain boundary near the fusion line in the base metal as well as in the weld fusion zone during solidification. The $C_{U}$ crack is considered a result of the collapsed keyhole through incomplete closure during rapid solidification. (Received October 7, 1999)
A flip-chip bonding system using IR laser with a wavelength of 1064 nm was developed and associated process parameters were analyzed using Taguchi methods. An infrared laser beam is designed to transmit through a silicon chip and used for transferring laser energy directly to micro-bumps. This process has several advantages: minimized heat affect zone, fast bonding and good reliability in the microchip bonding interface. Approximately 50 % of the irradiated energy can be directly used for bonding the solder bumps with a few seconds of bonding time. A flip-chip with 120 solder bumps was used for this experiment and the composition of the solder bump was Sn3.0Ag0.5Cu. The main processing parameters for IR laser flip-chip bonding were laser power, scanning speed, a spot size and UBM thickness. Taguchi methods were applied for optimizing these four main processing parameters. The optimized bump shape and its shear force were modeled and the experimental results were compared with them. The analysis results indicate that the bump shape and its shear force are dominantly influenced by laser power and scanning speed over a laser spot size. In addition, various effects of processing parameters for IR laser flip-chip bonding are presented and discussed.
Laser Transmission Joining (LTJ) of plastics is a process in which light of suitable wavelength is transmitted through a transparent substrate that is in contact with an absorbing one. In this paper, LTJ is investigated by preliminary experiments from the viewpoint of mechanical engineering. To understand transmitting characteristics of each polymer substrate, transmission rate, reflection rate and absorption coefficient of polymer are measured by using a laser power-meter. Characteristics of joining in the spot welding and seam welding are investigated by measuring the fracture load. Fracture load increases in accordance to the laser power and irradiation time. However, when the laser power is over 60W and irradiation time over 4seconds, fracture load decreases. This phenomenon is probably due to heat-softening of materials. Besides, cavities are generated at a joint by evaporation of water molecules, which can be suppressed by introduction of a gap between two substrates.

The technology of Laser lamination joining of silicon steel sheets has been studied in this paper. Conventional sheets lamination process does not meet the requirments for the improvement electric parts performance. In response to this, a new Laser spot joining method has been developed. This study performs the Laser spot lamination joining while synchronizing the sillicon steel sheets in the dies with the press movement. Several conclusions have been drawn in this paper. Effects of beam focus, power, atmosphere gas and press oil etc.

Friction Spot Joining(FSJ) has a strong potential for aluminum alloy joining in automobile industries. The present paper focuses on the attempt to optimize the FSJ process for lap joining of A5052-H32 and A6061-T6 aluminum alloys. For A5052 maximum tensile shear strength has been observed for a tool rotating speed of 800rpm and for A6061 at 1000 rpm. Study on fracture modes of the tensile tested specimens of both A5052-H32 and A6061-T6 revealed, for high tensile strength values, plug fracture mode and lower tensile values, shear fracture mode. Above 2000 rpm distortion of the base metal, beside the tool shoulder was larger and plug fracture mode has been observed.
The estimation of nugget sizes was attempted by utilizing the artificial neural networks method. Artificial neural networks is a highly simplified model of the biological nervous system. Artificial neural networks is composed of a large number of elemental processors connected like biological neurons. Although the elemental processors have only simple computation functions, because they are connected massively, they can describe any complex functional relationship between an input-output pair in an autonomous manner. The electrode head movement signal, which is a good indicator of corresponding nugget size was determined by measuring the each test specimen. The sampled electrode movement data and the corresponding nugget sizes were fed into the artificial neural networks as input-output pairs to train the networks. In the training phase for the networks, the artificial neural networks constructs a fuctional relationship between the input-output pairs autonomusly by adjusting the set of weights. In the production(estimation) phase when new inputs are sampled and presented, the artificial neural networks produces appropriate outputs(the estimates of the nugget size) based upon the transfer characteristics learned during the training mode. Experimental verification of the proposed estimation method using artificial neural networks was done by actual destructive testing of welds. The predicted result by the artifficial neural networks were found to be in a good agreement with the actual nugget size. The results are quite promising in that the real-time estimation of the invisible nugget size can be achieved by analyzing the process variable without any conventional destructive testing of welds.

The form-joining process (or clinching) uses a set of die and punch to impose the plastic deformation-induced geometric constraint on a sheet metal pair, But their joining strength ranges 50-70 percent of that of the resistance spot welding. In this paper, a new form-joining process with the aid of adhesive is proposed in which an epoxy adhesive is applied to a sheet metal pair, to improve joining strength. The strength and mechanical properties of the new process are discussed and compared for other joining processes.

In this study, optimization of the process parameters of the resistance spot welding of a sheet of aluminum-coated boron alloyed steel, 22MnB5, used in hot stamping has been performed by a Taguchi method to increase the strength of the weld joint. The process parameters selected were current, electrode force, and weld time. The heating temperature and heating time of 22MnB5 are considered to be noise factors. It was known that the variation in the thickness of the intermetallic compound layer between the aluminum-coated layer and the substrate, which influences on the formation of nugget, was generated due to the difference of diffusion reaction according to heating conditions. From the results of spot weld experiment, the optimum weld condition was determined to be when the current, electrode force, and weld time were 8kA, 4kN, and 18 cycles, respectively. The result of a test performed to verify the optimized weld condition showed that the tensile strength of the weld joint was over 32kN, which is considerably higher than the required strength, i.e., 23kN.
