  • The effects of plaster on the behavior of single-story single-bay masonry-infilled steel frames under in-plane base accelerations have been experimentally investigated by a shake-table. Tested structures were made in a 1/3 scale, with realistic material properties and construction methods. Steel frames with high and low flexural rigidity of beams and columns were considered. Each type of frame was tested with three variants of masonry: (i) non-plastered masonry; (ii) masonry infill with conventional plaster on both sides; and (iii) masonry infill with a polyvinyl chloride (PVC) net reinforced plaster on both sides. Masonry bricks were made of lightweight cellular concrete. Each frame was firstly successively exposed to horizontal base accelerations of an artificial accelerogram, and afterwards, to horizontal base accelerations of a real earthquake. Characteristic displacements, strains and cracks in the masonry were established for each applied excitation. It has been concluded that plaster strengthens the infill and prevents damages in it, which results in more favorable behavior and increased bearing capacity of plastered masonry-infilled frames compared to non-plastered masonry-infilled frames. The load-bearing contribution of the adopted PVC net in the plaster was not noticeable for the tested specimens, probably due to relative small cross section area of fibers in the net. Behavior of masonry-infilled steel frames significantly depends on frame stiffness. Strong frames have smaller displacements than weak frames, which reduces deformations and damages of an infill.

  • In this study, the accuracy of the orthognathic surgical guides with single-stage split path was upgraded to realize orthognathic surgical guides with two-stage split path and simulated surgery was performed to verify its accuracy. As a result, the average error distance between the simulation model and the scan model was + 0.289 / - 0.468 mm (standard deviation 0.128), which was confirmed to be within ± 0.5 mm, which is a clinically acceptable level. Also, there was no significant difference compared with the average value of + 0.313 / - 0.456 mm (average standard deviation 0.106) of the conventional single-stage split path type device. It is judged that the use of this device can contribute to the reduction of surgical time and increase in accuracy since a separate finishing operation for bone preparation is unnecessary.

  • Acoustic behavior in gas turbine combustor with acoustic resonator is investigated numerically by adopting linear acoustic analysis. Helmholtz-type resonator is employed as acoustic resonator to suppress acoustic instability passively. The tuning frequency of acoustic resonator is adjusted by varying its length. Through harmonic analysis, acoustic-pressure responses of chamber to acoustic excitation are obtained and the resonant acoustic modes are identified. Acoustic damping effect of acoustic resonator is quantified by damping factor. As the tuning frequency of acoustic resonator approaches the target frequency of the resonant mode to be suppressed, mode split from the original resonant mode to lower and upper modes appears and thereby complex patterns of acoustic responses show up. Considering mode split and damping effect as a function of tuning frequency, it is desirable to make acoustic resonator tuned to broad-band frequencies near the maximum frequency of those of the possible upper modes.

  • This letter presents a new type of resonator, namely, the split quarterwave microstrip resonator (SQMR), to improve the poor harmonic suppression and low Q-factors in conventional quarterwave microstrip resonators. An oscillator incorporating the proposed SQMR is designed, fabricated, and tested to demonstrate that, not only the second harmonic suppression, but also the phase noise of the oscillator can be improved. The oscillator with the SQMR shows improved second harmonic suppression of -74.59 dBc and phase noise figure of merit of -169.77 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset.

  • A torque split type multi-pass CVT(MPC) system consiting of CVT and planetary gear train with 4 clutches was suggested to overcome the inherent inferior acceleration performance of CVT. Also, a shifting algorithm of MPC was suggested for the two driving modes : (1) power mode and (2) economy mode. By using the shifting algorithm and the MPC vehicle dynamic model, numerical simulations were performed to estimate the performance of the MPC vehicle. Simulation results showed that comparing the performance of the conventional 4-speed automatic transmission, an improvement in acceleration can be obtained by MPC for the power mode and 31% improvement in fuel economy for the economy mode.

  • Continuously variable transmission(CVT) mechanisms are proposed, which can offer a backward mode, a geared neutral, an underdrive mode and an overdriver mode. They are not required of a starting device as a torque converter. CVT mechanisms developed here present two distinct operating modes which are a power circulation mode and a power split mode. The transition of two modes takes place at the particular CVU speed ratio. For these CVT mechanisms, performance analysis related to speed ratio, power ratio and theoretical efficiency are executed.

  • This paper proposes a current ripple reduction method to improve the control performance of B4 type inverter that is studied for cost-effective drive systems. B4 inverters employ only four switches and they have a center-tapped connection between the split dc-link capacitors and one phase of a three-phase motor or load. In the B4 topology, unbalanced three-phase voltages will be generated due to the dc-link voltage ripple. To solve this problem, this paper presents a voltage distortion compensation method that adjusts the voltage reference with the consideration of dc-link voltage ripple. The validity of the proposed method is verified by simulation and excremental results with an induction machine.

  • Polyester type polyurethane foam has low hydrolysis resistance. It was overcome with addition of acrylic polyol by quasi prepolymer method. Tensile strength and hardness of polyurethane foam contained acrylic polyol was increased with increasing of acrylic polyol contents. But split tear strength and tear strength was slightly changed. Hydrolysis resistance of polyurethane foam was measured by loss % of tensile strength. It was improved with increasing of acrylic polyol contents from 25.5g to 102g.

  • The tensile strength of unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced plastics under a high strain rate was experimentally investigated. A high-strain-rate test was performed using the tension-type split Hopkinson bar technique. In order to obtain the tensile stress-strain relations, a special fixture was used for the impact tensile specimen. The experimental results demonstrated that the tensile modulus and strength in the longitudinal direction are independent of the strain rate. In contrast, the tensile properties in the transverse direction and the shear properties increase with the strain rate. Moreover, it was observed that the strain-rate dependence of the shear strength is much stronger than that of the transverse strength. The tensile strength of off-axis specimens was measured using an oblique tab, and the experimental results were compared with the tensile strength predicted based on the Tsai-Hill failure criterion. It was concluded that the tensile strength can be characterized quite well using the above failure criterion under dynamic loading conditions.
