  • The electron spin resonanec of sigle crystals of L-alanine have been observed at T=300K, 100K and analyzed for different orieantations of the crystal in the magnetic field and at microwave frequency X-band. The stable free radical profuced by the irradiation is proved to be of the form CH$_3$CHR, where R is a group which has no nuclei with detectable coupling A notable dependence on temperature of the absorption was observed in the range from 1100K to 2l0K. It was concluded that the reorietation of the methy group of the radical H$_3$CCHR is quenched at low temperature.

  • Ferroelectric, magnetic, and magnetoelectric effects for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3$ ceramics have been investigated. The data show that magnetoelectric polarization coefficient, ${\alpha}_p$ is due to a linear coupling between polarization and magnetization, and that ${\alpha}_p$ is independent of dc magnetic bias and ac magnetic field. The values of ${\alpha}_p$ and magnetic induced susceptibility for lanthanum modified $BiFeO_3-PbTiO_3$ ceramics are much larger than those of single $BiFeO_3$ crystal. We believe that the magnetoelectric effect is significantly enhanced by breaking of the cycloidal spin state of a long-period spiral spin structure due to randomly distributed charged imperfections.

  • The one-dimensional coordination polymers, $[Cu^{II}(L)(NO_3)_2]_n$ (1) and {$[Cu^{II}(L)(NO_3)]{\cdot}2H_2O}_{2n} (2), were synthesized from $Cu(NO_3)_2{\cdot}3H_2O$ and 2-[(pyridin-3-ylmethyl)amino]ethanol (L, PMAE) in methanol by controlling the molar ratio of copper(II) salt. Copper(II) ion in 1 has one pyridine group of PMAE whose an aminoethanol group coordinates adjacent copper(II) ion. As the pyridine group is bonded to neighboring copper(II) ion, 1 becomes a one-dimensional chain. Contrary to 1, the structure of 2 shows that the oxygen atom of ethoxide group is bridged between two copper(II) ions, which forms a dinuclear complex. Additionally, the pyridine group of PMAE included one dinuclear unit is coordinated to the other dimeric one each other, which leads to a one-dimensional polymer. Due to the structural differences, 1 exhibits weak antiferromagnetic interaction, while 2 shows strong antiferromagnetic interaction. Due to direct spin exchange via oxygen of PMAE 2 has a much strong spin coupling than 1.

  • Single crystalline Fe/NiO bilayers were epitaxially grown on Ag(001) and on MgO(001), and investigated by Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED), Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE), and X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichorism (XMLD). We find that while the Fe film has an in-plane magnetization in both Fe/NiO/Ag(001) and Fe/NiO/MgO(001) systems, the NiO spins switch from out-of-plane direction in Fe/NiO/MgO(001) to in-plane direction in Fe/NiO/Ag(001). These two different NiO spin orientations generate remarkable different effects that the NiO induced magnetic anisotropy in the Fe film is much greater in Fe/NiO/Ag(001) than in Fe/NiO/MgO(001). XMLD measurement shows that the much greater magnetic anisotropy in Fe/NiO/Ag(001) is due to a 90o-coupling between the in-plane NiO spins and the in-plane Fe spins which causes a switching of the NiO spins during the Fe magnetization reversal.

  • The Cu thickness dependence of magnetic sensitivity for the NiFe/Cu/NiFe/IrMn spin valve multilayer was investigated. The magnetic properties measured by minor MR curves for the Ta(5 nm)/NiFe(8 nm)/Cu(3.5 nm)/NiFe(4 nm)/IrMn(8 nm)/Ta(2.5 nm) multilayer is MR = 1.46 %, MS = 2.0 %/Oe, $H_c\;=\;2.6\;Oe$, and $H_{int}\;=\;0.1\;Oe$. The magnetic sensitivities of GMR-SV devices with ten different widths and a same length of $4.45\;{\mu}m$ by fabricated by photo lithography decreased from 0.3 %/Oe to 0.06%/Oe as from a width of $10\;{\mu}m$ to $1\;{\mu}m$.

  • The holes with a diameter of $35{\mu}m$ inside the GMR-SV (giant magnetoresistance-spin valve) film were patterned by using the photolithography process and ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) Ar-ion milling. From the magnetoresistance curves of the GMR-SV film with holes measuring by 4-electrode method, the MR (magnetoresistance ratio) and MS (magnetic sensitivity) are almost same as the values of initial states. On other side hand, the $H_{ex}$ (exchange bias coupling field) and $H_c$ (coercivity) dominantly increased from 120 Oe and 10 Oe to 190 Oe and 41 Oe as increment of the number of holes inside GMR-SV film respectively. These results were shown to be attributed to major effect of EMD (easy magnetic domian) having a region positioned between two holes perpendicular to the sensing current. On the basis of this study, the fabrication of GMR-SV applying to the hole formation improved the magnetoresistance properties having the thermal stability and durability of bio-device.

  • It was observed that the magnetic moment for iron in $[(DPGH)_2FeO_2Fe(DPGH)_2]$, the oxygenation product of a octahedral iron(Ⅱ) complex, $[Fe(DPGH)_2(NH_3_2]$, decreases with decreasing temperature from ${\mu}$ = 3.60 B.M (Bohr Magneton) per iron at $298^{\circ}$K down to ${\mu}$ = 1.65 B.M per iron at $4.2^{\circ}K$. This observation may be explained by a weak antiferromagnetic coupling between two iron(Ⅲ) atoms of intermediate spin state (S = 3/2) in the molecule with the coupling constant $J = -l cm^{-1}$.

  • The discoveries of antiferromagnetic coupling in Fe/Cr multilayers by Grunberg, the Giant Magneto Resistance by Fert and Grunberg and a large tunneling magnetoresistance at room temperature by Moodera have triggered enormous research on magnetic thin films and magnetoelectronic devices. Large opportunities are especially opened by the spin dependent tunneling resistance, where a strong dependence of the tunneling current on an external magnetic field can be found. We will briefly address important basic properties of these junctions like thermal, magnetic and dielectric stability and discuss scaling issues down to junction sizes below 0.01 $\mu\textrm{m}$$^2$with respect to single domain behavior, switching properties and edge coupling effects. The second part will give an overview on applications beyond the use of the tunneling elements as storage cells in MRAMs. This concerns mainly field programmable logic circuits, where we demonstrate the clocked operation of a programmed AND gate. The second 'unconventional' feature is the use as sensing elements in DNA or protein biochips, where molecules marked magnetically with commercial beads can be detected via the dipole stray field in a highly sensitive and relatively simple way.

  • A velocity-compounded(VC) turbine of the 75ton turbopump was developed as an improved performance backup for a single-rotor base-line turbine. Curvic coupling was used for the connection between rotors and shaft. High temperature torsion test and spin test was performed for the curvic coupling design validation. Aerodynamic performance test revealed that the developed VC turbine can generate 20.5% higher specific power than the base-line turbine. It has been measured that $1^{st}$ rotor of the subject turbine generates 74.1% of total power at design operating condition.

  • Structural and compositional heterogeneities of sputter deposited, amorphous $Co_{87}Zr_{4}NB_{9}$ thin films were investigated using TEM and EDS with windowless detector. The films deposited with substrate bias and annealed in rotating magnetc field showed two amorphous phases of Co-rich region and (ZrNb)oxide-rich region, and revealed 'ultra-soft' magnetic properties. Revesible bias-responses and overdamped frequency responses, along with small Hc, Hk and Mr/Ms ratio, give the possibility of ultra-soft magnetic behavior fo CoZrNb thin films. We proposed the vortex type magnetization distribution in remanent state which was correlated with the thin film heterogeneity. Then, the ultra-soft characteristics of the compositionally heterogeneous films were explained by the spin vortices that minimized the total magnetostatic and exchange coupling energies.
