  • This survey was carried out to investigate the characteristics of low temperature injury in rice plants at a southwestern alpine area of Korea in 2003. During vegetative, reproductive, and ripening stage in a southwestern alpine area, mean air temperature was lower by 0.4, 3.1 and $1.7^{\circ}C$, respectively, as compared to those of a normal year, Minimum air temperature during the reproductive and ripening stage was lower by 2.6 and $1.7^{\circ}C$, respectively, as compared to those of a normal year, Sunshine hours during vegetative, reproductive, and ripening stage were lower by 40.6, 81.3 and 8.4 hours, respectively, than those of a normal year. Spikelet-sterility type cold injury occurred from the latter part of June to the middle of July, which is from panicle formation stage to meiosis stage, at temperatures less than $17^{\circ}C$. Spikelet sterility under normal transplanting (May 20) ranged from 16 to 58%, which was lower than that under early transplanting in the latter part of April (29 to 83%). The total area impacted by cold damage was 2,723ha in Namwon, 510ha in Sunchang, 300ha in Jinan, 250ha in Muju, and 210ha in Jangsu. Average spiklet sterility in these regions was 44%. Rice cultivars Odaebyeo, Unbongbyeo, and Jinbubyeo showed greater tolerance to low temperature than CV, Chugwangbyeo.

  • This experiment was carried out to clarify the effect of the deep water irrigation on dry-seeded rice cultivation at the three different water managements-deep continuous flooding(DCF), water saving irrigation(WSI), ordinary irrigation(OI). The highest tillering numbers per $m^2$ of rice were 551, 466 and 455 in OI, WSI and DCF, respectively. The tillering number of rice plants were significantly reduced in DCF. Heading date was delayed and the total chlorophyll content in leaf after heading was higher in DCF than those in other irrigation methods. For the characteristics associated with lodging, the culm length in DCF was slightly elongated and the diameter of culm in DCF was thicker than that in WSI and OI. The breaking weight and bending moment in DCF also were higher than those in others. As the result, although the culm length in DCF was long, the lodging index was comparatively low. The panicle length in DCF was longer than in OI and WSI. The spikelet number per $m^2$ and 1,000-grain weight were the most in WSI, while panicle number, ripened grain ratio and grain weight were not significantly different. Longer panicle length and more spikelet number resulted in higher yielding capacity in DCF.

  • It is important for genetic resources to collect and identify in native medium-leaf type zoysiagrasses species distributed in Korea. This study was conducted to investigate morphological variation and characteristics of native medium-leaf type zoysiagrasses from coastal, island and inland regions in Korea. Among them, 75 collected lines was confirmed to have various morphological variations, accessions were classified into 2 main based group coastal and inland regions by morphological characteristics and site environment. Group I included Z. sinica type, this group showed 3.7 mm in leaf width, 29 in number of seed per spikelet and 5.0 mm in seed length. Group II included Z. japonica type, this group showed 4.4 mm in leaf width, 42 in number of seed per spikelet and 3.5 mm in seed length. There is a need for additional research on growth characteristics and the molecular level for the introgressive hybridization between species which confirmed that cross-pollination is possible due to protogyny. The individuals showing variations should be preserved as valuable genetic resources for the expansion of variations in zoysiagrasses, and the results of this investigation on the genetic resources collected will be highly valuable in breeding high quality turfgrass.

  • A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of water weevil damage on growth and grain guality in rice. Plant height was shortened, number of tillers per hill decreased and maximum tillering stage delayed in damaged field by rice water weevil. Heading date was delayed by 1-2days, culm lenght shortened, panicle lengthened, number of panicles decreaced, number of panicles per spikelet increased, ripened grain ratio decreased in damaged field by rice water weevil. Yield per 10a was decreased 4-22% in damaged field compared with that in undamaged field by rice water weevil, yield loss in late transplanting (June 23) was larger than that in early transplanting (May 20). Imperfect kerml rice, especially green kernel rice, was increased in damaged field by rice water weevil.

  • In order to find out the possibility of increasing the number of spikelets by changing transplanting date, this study was conducted at Suwon, Yuseong and Jinju in 1979 and 1980. Climatic consumption effect was different depending on location, year, and variety. Number of spikelets can be increased by changing transplanting date due to the decrease of climatic consumption index (C C I) during the reproductive stage. Transplanting date for higher yield and number of spikelets of Tongil was May 25 at Suwon, from May 25 to June 5 at Yuseong and June 5 at Jinju, and in the japonica, it was slightly earlier than that of Tongil in each location. Increasing the number of spikelets and grain yield by the effect of decrease in C C C during the reproductive stage should be considered the percentage of ripened grains.

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of shattered grain by combine harvesting at the previous year on rice plant emergence at different planting methods and plant characteristics, The results are follows : Combine harvesting greatly influence on shattered grain of Samgangbyeo as Tongil variety (49.5kg/10a) compared to that of Nagdongbyeo as Japonica variety(27.8kg/10a), while Nagdong-byeo showed higher germination rate than Samgangbyeo, whether transplanted and direct seeded. Emergence of volunteer and seed mixture were lower in transplanted than in direct seeded. In variety test. Japonica variety showed higher emergence of volunteer rice and seed mixture than Tongil variety. Generally, no significant difference in yield components were observed with different varieties by the volunteer rice. But the volunteer rice caused by combine harvesting decreased culm length, panicle length, spikelet number, panicle number and ripening ratio. except l000-grain weights.

  • Photoperiod sensitive genetic male sterile (PGMS) rice is sterile mutant controlled by photoperiod. A PGMS mutant 920S was sterile grown under long-day (LD) photoperiod (14 h light/10 h dark) but fertile grown under short-day (SD) photoperiod (10 h light/14 h dark). Proteome analysis revealed that 12 protein spots were differentially expressed in the spikelets of 920S plants either treated with LD or SD photoperiod. Among these proteins, three proteins including chlorophyll a/b binding protein, vacuolar ATPase ${\beta}-subunit,\;{\alpha}-tubulin$ and an unknown protein were more than three-fold abundant in the spikelet of the SD-treated plants than those of the LD-treated plants. On the other hand, eight proteins including acetyl transferase, 2, 3- biphosphoglycerate, aminopeptidase N, pyruvate decarboxylase, 60S acidic ribosomal protein and three unknown protein spots were more abundant in the spikelets of the LD-treated plants than those of the SD-treated plants. The results suggest that the observed proteins may be involved in sterile or fertile pollen development under LD or SD photoperiod respectively in the PGMS mutant rice.

  • Rice is very sensitive to high temperatures during the reproductive stage, particularly during the flowering and anthesis periods. To determine how high temperatures result in sterility during the flowering period in Korean rice cultivars, groups of 11 cultivars were subjected to different temperature regimes (24, 28, 30, and 33℃) during the flowering stage using sunlit phytotrons. At an average of 33℃, all 11 rice cultivars reached anthesis earlier than at the other temperatures. Microscopy analyses revealed significant differences in pollen germination and pollen viability in cultivars grown at 33℃ compared to those cultured at lower temperatures. At 33℃, the cultivars had significantly lower fertility rates (47% reduction) than cultivars grown at 24℃. These findings are important as rice pollination and fertility depend on the pollen viability and germination. The present study shows that rice fertility is negatively affected by excessively high temperatures.

  • Rice is a facultative short-day (SD) plant in which flowering is induced under SD conditions or by other environmental factors and internal genetic programs. Overexpression of Histone Deacetylase 701 (HDT701) accelerates flowering in hybrid rice. In this study, mutants defective in HDT701 flowered late under both SD and long-day conditions. Expression levels of florigens Heading date 3a (Hd3a) and Rice Flowering Locus T1 (RFT1), and their immediate upstream floral activator Early heading date 1 (Ehd1), were significantly decreased in the hdt701 mutants, indicating that HDT701 functions upstream of Ehd1 in controlling flowering time. Transcript levels of OsINDETERMINATE SPIKELET 1 (OsIDS1), an upstream repressor of Ehd1, were significantly increased in the mutants while those of OsGI and Hd1 were reduced. Chromatin-immunoprecipitation assays revealed that HDT701 directly binds to the promoter region of OsIDS1. These results suggest that HDT701 induces flowering by suppressing OsIDS1.
