The genus Tripylina Brzeski, 1963 is a group of terrestrial nematodes that inhabit soil and semi-wet biomes, most of which have been reported from Europe, Asia, America, Africa, and New Zealand. Tripylina stramenti (Yeates, 1971) Tsalolikhin, 1983, belonging to the family Trischistomatidae Andrassy, 2007, is newly discovered from Korea. The specimens were collected from the edge of the valley of Ulleung-gun, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. Tripylina stramenti described herein shows typical morphological characters of the genus Tripylina, including six and four setae in a single whorl, present dorsal tooth and subventral teeth, prodelphic reproductive system of female, absence post-uterine sac, narrow sickle-shaped spicule of male and generally S-shaped tail. The specimens differ in their body width (from the New Zealand populations), outer labial setae length, cuticles thickness(from the West African populations), and nerve ring position (from Indian populations). This species is distinguished from other Tripylina species by its relatively large body, two anterior and subventral teeth, and single cervical seta. In this study, morphological characteristics and morphometric information of the Korean T. stramenti isolate are described, illustrated, and compared with the same species from other geographic origins.
Two new records of marine nematodes, belonging to the family Ironidae de Man, 1876, are reported based on the specimens collected from intertidal sediments from the west coast of Korea. Conilia sinensis is characterized by a relatively long body length, a well-developed buccal cavity with three claw-like teeth, the presence of a single spicule with transverse striations, the presence of rib-shaped telamons, and single precloacal supplement. Pheronous donghaiensis is distinguished from other species of the genus by a well-developed buccal cavity with four claw-like solid teeth and minute denticles, relatively short and thick spicules with the central septum, the presence of 8-9 curved tubular-shaped precloacal supplements, and a sharp pointed tail with three small tubular supplements arranged into two rows in males. In this report, we provide a taxonomic description and illustrations of two unrecorded species of the family Ironidae by differential interference contrast microscopy. This is the first taxonomic report on the species of the family Ironidae from Korea.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Intravascular Laser Irradiation of Blood(ILlB) by the live blood analysis. In the morphological change of red blood cells, Burr cell, Ovalocyte and Poikilocyte were decreased significantly, but Acanthocyte and Target cell were increased significantly. 4. In the abnormal matters in plasma, the Cholesterol cristal did not showed significant change, but the Aggregation of platelet, Lipids, Spicule, Leucocyte, Uric acid cristal did showed a little significant decrease. Conclusion : These findings suggest that live blood analysis is useful to judge the effect of treatment and diagnosis in oriental medicine, and with the effect of Intravascular Laser Irradiation of Blood, it had showed significant effect on rouleau of red blood cells, morphological change of red blood cells and abnormal matters in plasma.
Adult gnathostomes were discovered in the stomach of the Jeju weasel, Mustela sibilica quelpartis, road-killed in Jeju-do (Province). Their morphological characters were examined to identify the species. Total 50 gnathostome adults were collected from 6 out of 10 weasels examined. In infected weasels, 4-6 worms were grouped and embedded in each granulomatous gastric tumor, except 1 weasel. Male worms were $25.0{\times}1.4$ mm in average size, and had a tail with pedunculate papillae, a spicule, and minute tegumental spines. Females were $40.0{\times}2.5$mm in average size, and had a tail without tegumental spines. Pointed and posteriorly curved hooklets were arranged in 8-10 rows on the head bulb. Tegumental spines were distributed from behind the head bulb to the middle portion of the body. The spines were different in size and shape by the distribution level of the body surface. Fertilized eggs were $65.5{\times}38.9\;{\mu}m$ in average size, and had a mucoid plug at 1 pole. These gnathostomes from Jeju weasels were identified as Gnathostoma nipponicum Yamaguti, 1941. By the present study, it was confirmed for the first time that G. nipponicum is distributed in Jeju-do, the Republic of Korea, and the Jeju weasel, M. sibilica quelpartis, plays a crucial role for its definitive host.

Objectives: The formation of new bone by periosteum due to an insult is called periosteal bone reaction (PBR). This study assessed the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) patterns of periosteal bone reactions associated with periapical inflammatory lesion (apical periodontitis/periapical rarefying osteitis). Materials and Methods: Twenty-two small field of view CBCT images of patients with PBR were selected from a database of a private practice limited to endodontics. The volume of the periapical inflammatory lesion, the presence of cortical fenestration, the distance of the root apices to the affected cortex, and the location, pattern, and longest diameter of the periosteal reaction were recorded. Statistical analysis was performed using Wilcoxon Ranksum, Fischer's exact, Spearman Correlation Coefficient, and paired t-test. Results: In all cases, periosteal bone reaction manifested as either parallel (90.9%) or irregular (9.1%). No correlation was found between periapical inflammatory lesion volume and the periosteal reaction's longest diameter (p > 0.05). Cortical fenestration was noted in 72.7% of the cases. In addition, the findings showed that periosteal reactions were located mostly on the buccal and were present 53.8% and 100% of the time in the mandible and maxilla, respectively. Conclusions: The periosteal reactions of endodontic origin had a nonaggressive form (i.e., parallel or irregular), and none of the lesions resulted in a periosteal reaction with an ominous Codman's triangle or spicule pattern.

The sea urchin has been used as sea food in many countries. This species has also been an important organism of embryological studies for more than a century. In recent years, sea urchin embryos are being used as testing materials for toxicity of pollutants and toxins. Usefulness of sea urchin embryos as experimental models comes from the easiness in obtaining sea urchin samples and a lot of gametes, in rearing embryos in the laboratory, in observing the cellular movement and organ formation during the embryogenesis and in manipulating blastomeres and genetic maferials. The sea urchin in itself is a key organism for the understanding of deuterostome evolution from the protostomes and of indirect development of marine invertebrates which undergo the planktotrophic larval stage. A fertilized sea urchin egg goes through rapid cleavage and becomes a 60 cell embryo 7hr after fertilization. It then develops into a morula, a blastula, a gastrula and finally a pluteus larva approximately 70 hr after fertilization. At the 60 cell stage, the embryo comprises of five territories that express territory-speciflc genes and later form different organs. Micromeres at the vegetal pole ingress into the blastoceol and become the primary mesenchyme cells(PMCs). PMCs express genes involved in skeletogenesis such as SM30, SM37, SM50, PM27, msp130. Among the genes, SM37 and SM50 are considered to be members of a gene family which is characterized by early blastula expression, Glycine-Proline-Glutamine rich repeat structures and spicule matrix forming basic proteins. Genetic studies on the sea urchin embryos help understand the molecular basis of indirect development of marine invertebrates and also of the biomineralization common to the animal kingdom.
The Dalseong acid mine drainage were studied focused on the characters of schwertmannite that controls geochemistry of the stream. Besides chemical analysis of stream water, particle size analysis, XRD SEM and TEM were performed on precipitates of streams and on wasted metalliferous ores. The AMD discharged from the abandoned mine reveals a decrease of pH and EC downward stream. Euhedral sulfur occurs as equigranular aggregates on the altered pyrite while fine acicula goethite coalesces to form cross, star, or starfish-like shapes. Water chemistry plotted on the Eh-pH diagram shows that schwertmannite and ferrihydrite are stable phases. Reddish brown precipitates consist of mostly schwertmannite with less goethite, whereas yellowish brown precipitates are composed of geothite with less schwertmannite. The particle size of precipitates ranges $d(0.1)\;0.861{\mu}m{\sim}3.769{\mu}m,\;d(0.5)\;3.984{\mu}m{\sim}15.255{\mu}m,\;and\;d(0.9)\;9.875{\mu}m{\sim}56.726{\mu}m$. Schwertmannite is characterized by equigranular spheric form. Pincushion or spicule with 100nm width and $200{\sim}300nm$length form on schwertmannite sphere with radial growth patterns. It is highly probable that reddish or yellowish brown precipitates formed in many AMDs may contain schwerhnannite. Because it can serve as sink for removing heavy elements by adsorption in AMD system, there is a need to correctly identify schwertmannite in precipitates and to characterize its phase stability.
Four new and two known species of soil nematodes belonging the order Dorylaimida are described and illustrated. Discolaimium gyeongiens n. sp. is 1.6~1.7 mm long, c=37~41, odontostyle 19~21$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by having wider lip region and very short prerectum. Aporcelaimellus donghwaens n. sp. is 2.8~2.9mm long, c=40.0~4.5, odontostyle 19~20$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by possessing shorter odontophore, presence of cardiac disc and conoid tail. Labronema korandus n. sp. is 2.2~2.3 mm long, c=68~81, odontostyle 27~28$\mu\textrm{m}$, spicule 61$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by having continuous lip region, circular vulva and cylindrical tail. Zalophidera longus n. sp. is 4.1~4.4mm long, c=107~130, spear 80~93$\mu\textrm{m}$ long and is characterized by large sized body, spear and spear extension. Discolaimoides bulbiferous and Diphtherophora communis were reported here for the first time in Korea.
KODOS (Korea Deep ocean Study)-89 sediments, recovered from western part of Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone in north Pacific, show two distinctly colored layer zones: surface yellow brown layer (unit A) and subsurface dark brown layer (unit B), and roughly recognized as Quaternary and Tertiary in age, respectively. Geochemical characteristics are also different in those two units. Smectite, water, micronodule, and heavy metal contents are higher in unit B, while POC content is higher in unit A. High smectite and low POC contents in unit B are due to the longer formation period of smectite, almost decomposition of labile organic matter in unit B relative to unit A. High water content in unit B is caused by coarse fabric which results from higher content of spicules and spines. Additionally, stronger electrostatic repulsion force caused by high smectite content also supports high water content in unit B relative to unit A. Variations in heavy metal contents are closely related to the amount of micronodule, which has higher metal contents than that of sediment. Therefore, we conclude that the differences of geochemical characteristics in unit A and unit B are resulted from the different diagenetic durations of unit A and unit B.
Purpose: We report a case of unilateral, focal, pigmented paravenous retinochoroidal atrophy (PPRCA). Case summary: A 46-year-old female visited our clinic in complaint of a vague problem with her right eye identified during a general medical examination. The visual acuity (without correction) of both eyes was 1.0. Slit-lamp examination of both eyes revealed no specific signs. Fundus examination of the right eye revealed focal, bony-spicule-shaped retinochoroidal atrophy with pigmentation along the course of the superior retinal vein. A fundus autofluorescence examination revealed principally hypofluorescence with some hyperfluorescence at the margin of the atrophic retinochoroidal lesion. Optical coherence tomography revealed mixed clumping and atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) layer and thinning of the choriocapillaris layer. Fluorescence angiography revealed a window defect and blockage at the site of the lesion (the fluorescent material did not enter the lesion). The site of the window defect was in correlation with the atrophic RPE region. The site of the blockage at lesion also matched with the site of the regional pigment clumping. No definite leakage was observed. Conclusions: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of unilateral focal PPRCA reported from Korea.
