The Effects of the IERS Conventions (2010) on High Precision Orbit Propagation

  • The Earth is not perfectly spherical and its rotational axis is not fixed in space, and these geophysical and kinematic irregularities work as dominant perturbations in satellite orbit propagation. The International Earth Rotation Service (IERS) provides the Conventions as guidelines for using the Earth's model and the reference time and coordinate systems defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). These guidelines are directly applied to model orbital dynamics of Earth satellites. In the present work, the effects of the latest conventions released in 2010 on orbit propagation are investigated by comparison with cases of applying the previous guidelines, IERS Conventions (2003). All seven major updates are tested, i.e., for the models of the precession/nutation, the geopotential, the ocean tides, the ocean pole tides, the free core nutation, the polar motion, and the solar system ephemeris. The resultant position differences for one week of orbit propagation range from tens of meters for the geopotential model change from EGM96 to EGM2008 to a few mm for the precession/nutation model change from IAU2000 to IAU2006. The along-track differences vary secularly while the cross-track components show periodic variation. However, the radial-track position differences are very small compared with the other components in all cases. These phenomena reflect the variation of the ascending node and the argument of latitude. The reason is that the changed models tested in the current study can be regarded as small fluctuations of the geopotential model from the point of view of orbital dynamics. The ascending node and the argument of latitude are more sensitive to the geopotential than the other elements. This study contributes to understanding of the relation between the Earth's geophysical properties and orbital motion of satellites as well as satellite-based observations.

방전관 형태 및 열화 조건에 따른 세라믹 메탈할라이드 램프의 흑화원인 분석 (Analysis of Wall Blackening Reason in Ceramic Metal Halide Lamp by Shape of Arc-tube and Degradation Condition)

  • In order to analyze the reason of wall blackening, which affect the decline of lifetime in a ceramic metal halide lamp, we carried out the deterioration of ceramic tubes by a change in operating conditions with arc tubes of two types of spherical and cylindrical, and we have confirmed the cause of wall blackening through the analysis of element composition and spectrum from SEM/EDS and spectrum analyzer. Wall blackening of tungsten was shown by sputtering from ignition in 20 minute on/off condition and wall blackening from chemical reaction between PCA wall and rare earth halides was shown significantly in a condition without on/off test. Especially, the wall blackening and the decline of luminous flux were reduced by inner convection in spherical type arc tube. Moreover, the color temperature and color coordinate were changed by reduction of emission spectrum of Dy which causes the chemical reaction with PCA wall.

On the tensile strength of brittle materials with a consideration of Poisson's ratios

  • The influence of Poisson's ratio on the tensile strength of brittle materials is neglected in many studies. When brittle materials are loaded in compression or impact, substantial tensile stresses are induced within the materials. These tensile stresses are responsible for splitting failure of the materials. In this paper, the state of stress in a spherical particle due to two diametrically opposed forces is analyzed theoretically. A simple equation for the state of stress at the center of the particle is obtained. An analysis of the distribution of stresses along the z-axis due to distributed pressures and concentrated forces, and on diametrically horizontal plane due to concentrated forces, shows that it is reasonable to propose the tensile stress at the center of the particle at the point of failure as a tensile strength of the particle. Moreover, the tensile strength is a function of the Poisson's ratio of the material. As the state of stress along the z-axis in an irregular specimen tends to be similar to that in a spherical particle compressed diametrically with the same force, this tensile strength has some validity for irregular particles as well. Therefore, it can be proposed as the tensile strength for brittle materials generally. The effect of Poisson's ratio on the tensile strength is discussed.

INFRARED EMISSION FROM SPHERICAL DUST CLOUDS

  • Infrared emissions from spherical dust, clouds are calculated using quasi-diffusion method. We have employed graphite-silicate mixture with power-law size distribution for the dust model. The grains are assumed to be heated and cooled by radiative processes only. The primary heating source is diffuse interstellar radiation field. hut the cases with an embedded source are also considered. Since graphite grains have higher temperature than silicate grains, the observed IR emission is mainly due to graphite grains, unless the fraction of graphite grains is negligibly small. The color temperature of Bok globules obtained from IRAS 60 and $100{\mu}m$ data are found to be consistent with the dust cloud with graphite-silicate mixture exposed to average interstellar radiation field. The color temperature is sensitive to the external radiation field, but rather insensitive to the size distribution of the grains. We found that the density distribution can be recovered outside the beam size using the inversion technique that assumes negligible optical depth. However, the information within the beam size is lost for if beam convolved intensity distributions are used in deriving density profile.

울릉도 조면암질 유리의 변절에 의한 할로이사이트의 생성 (Halloysite Formation by the Alteration of Trachytic Glass in Ulleung Island)

  • 울릉도의 조면암질 응회암의 저온변질작용으로 할로이사이트가 생성되었다. 할로이사이트는 자연 상태에서 수화된 상태로 발견되었으며, 양파구조의 구상 또는 가장자리가 휘어진 판상 입자로 산출된다. 할로이사이트는 Si의 함량이 고령토 광물의 이상값보다 높아서 약간의 비정질이 혼재한 것으로 해석되었다. 또한 할로이사이트의 높은 Fe 함량은 판상 할로이사이트 생성의 원인이다. 조면암질 유리가 변질되면서 용탈된 원소들이 주로 화산유리의 입간 공극에 할로이사이트로 침전되었으며, 유리를 교대한 Si가 풍부한 반구상 비정질 집합체도 부분적으로 구상할로이사이트로 변질된 것으로 보인다. 할로이사이트는 조면암질 화산활동이 활발했던 울릉도에서 화산재의 주요 변질물 중의 하나이다.

Precise Geoid Model for Korea from Gravity and GPS Data

  • The data, methodology, and the resulting accurate gravimetric geoid model for the Korean Peninsula (latitude from 32˚ N to 40˚ N and longitude from 124˚ E to 131˚ E) are presented in this study. The types of used data were a high degree geopotential model (the EGM96 spherical harmonic coefficient set), a set of 12,615 land gravity observations, 1,056,075 shipborne gravity observations, and KMS2002 gravity anomalies from satellite altimetry. The remove-restore technique was successfully applied to combining the above mentioned data sets using up to degree and order 112 of the EGM96 coefficient. The residual geoid was calculated with residual Free-Air anomaly values using the spherical Stokes' formula with a 37-km integration cap radius. The geoid model was referred to WGS84 geodetic system and was tested using a set of GPS/levelling geoid undulations. The absolute accuracy is 0.132 m and some improvement compared to the PNU95 geoid model was found.

섹터모드의 로스비하우어비츠 파동과 균형을 이루는 고도장 (Geopotentinl Field in Nonlinear Balance with the Sectoral Mode of Rossby-Haurwitz Wave on the Inclined Rotation Axis)

  • 기울어진 자전축을 갖는 회전계에서, 일정한 각속도로 회전하는 동서풍이 있는 경우에 대해서 로스비하우어비츠 파동의 섹터모드(적도에 대한 반구 비대칭의 첫 번째 모드)와 균형을 이루는 지위고도장을 해석적으로 유도하였다. 균형장은 발산방정식으로부터 시간변화를 제거하고 라플라시안 연산자를 역산함으로써 구하였다. 역산은 비선형항의 계산과 포이슨 방정식의 해를 구하는 두 단계의 연산과정으로 이루어져 있다. 두 번째 단계에서, 구면조화함수로 표현되는 강제력의 항은 구면조화함수의 선형관계를 이용하였고, 그 이외의 항은 구면조화함수를 적분함으로써 구하였다. 균형장은 여섯 개의 동서파수 성분으로 표현됨이 드러났다. 본 연구에서 구한 균형장은 적도에 대하여 비대칭의 구조를 가지기 때문에, 대칭의 구조만을 가지는 것에 비하여 미분방정식의 수치해의 검종법으로서의 활용도가 높다. 일정한 각속도를 갖는 배경 동서풍이 지구의 자전각속도와 같거나 1/2에 해당하는 경우에는, 일부 동서파수 성분이 제거되는 것으로 나타났다. 이론적으로 구한 균형장은 정교한 수치모델을 통하여 구한 균형장과 거의 정확하게 같은 것으로 밝혀져, 이론적 해의 타당성이 입증되었다. 마지막으로, 로스비하우어비츠 파동의 섹터모드와 균형을 이루는 지위고도장의 안정성을 장기간시간적분을 통하여 살펴보았다.

Carbonate Coatings on Plant Twigs Found from a Travertine-Depositing Small Stream, Dijon, France

  • A number of coated grains (spherical to elongated ones in shape) were collected from a small stream, Dijon, France. They were characterized by typical concentric lamination surrounding broken twigs, and were thus identified as concentric precipitation on plant twigs. Within carbonate coatings of the plant twigs, two morphological groups including, eukaryotic green algae (Vaucheria sp.) and cyanobacteria (Scytonema sp. and Rivularia sp.) were detected, which form carbonate crystals that are surrounding their filaments. The filaments could have triggered carbonate precipitation by photosynthetic removal of $CO_2$ causing the increase of alkalinity of the water, and by supporting their sheaths as nucleation sites. Such encrusted twigs were found from 70 meters downstream, in which temperature and pH were measured as $11.1^{\circ}C$ and 8.18, respectively. These water chemistries ($11.1^{\circ}C$ and pH 8.18), with the aid of microbial photosynthesis, were likely to provide a suitable condition for carbonate precipitation on the twigs.

Construction of Orthogonal Basis Functions with Non-Divergent Barotropic Rossby-Haurwitz Waves

  • A new set of basis functions was constructed using the Rossby-Haurwitz waves, which are the eigenfunctions of nondivergent barotropic vorticity equations on the sphere. The basis functions were designed to be non-separable, that is, not factored into functions of either the longitude or the latitude. Due to this property, the nodal lines of the functions are aligned neither along with the meridian nor the parallel. The basis functions can be categorized into groups of which members have the same degree or the total wavenumber-like index on the sphere. The orthonormality of the basis functions were found to be close to the machine roundoffs, giving the error of $O(10^{-15})$ or $O(10^{-16})$ for double-precision computation (64 bit arithmetic). It was demonstrated through time-stepping procedure that the basis functions were also the eigenfunctions of the non-divergent barotropic vorticity equations. The projection of the basis functions was carried out onto the low-resolution geopotential field of Gaussian bell, and compared with the theory. The same projections were performed for the observed atmospheric-geopotential height field of 500 hPa surface to demonstrate decomposition into the fields that contain disturbance of certain range of horizontal scales. The usefulness of the new basis functions was thus addressed for application to the eigenmode analysis of the atmospheric motions on the global domain.

지하철 진동이 주변지반 및 인접구조물에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Vibration of Subway on Earth & Structures in the Region of Subway)

  • 최근 지하철 운행의 중대에 따른 지하철 각 부의 진동이 주변지반 및 인접 구조물에 큰 영향을 주고 있다. 본 연구에서는 지하철의 주행으로 인해 발생된 인첩 구조물의 진동을 저감하기 위한 새로운 해석방법을 제안하였다. 즉, X, Y, Z 3 축 방향 성분별로 측정된 각 방향별 기여관계와 각 방향별 진동신호를 하나의 구면파 신호로 합친 진동의 기여관계를 비교 분석하여 효과적인 진동 저감대책의 자료를 제시하였다. 이러한 연구의 결과로 지하철 각 부의 진동이 인근 지역 구조물에 미치는 기여순위는 전동차의 진동(특히, 1~2 Hz), 지하철 박스의 진동, 지반의 진동 순으로 됨을 알 수 있었다.
