  • PURPOSES : The purpose of the study is to a) explore the operating speed of trucks on rural highways affected by road geometry, and thereby b) develop a predictive model for the operating speed of trucks on rural highways. METHODS : Considering that most of the existing studies have focused on cars, the current study aimed to predict the operating speed of trucks by conducting linear regression analysis on the speed data of trucks operating on the linear-curved-linear portions of the road as a single set. RESULTS : The operating speed in the plane curve portion increased with the length of the curve, and decreased with a lower vertical grade and a smaller curve radius. In the straight plane portion, the operating speed increased with a larger curve radius(upstream), and decreased with an increase in the change of the vertical grade, depending on the length of the vertical curve. CONCLUSIONS : This study developed estimation models of truck for operational speed and evaluated the degree of safety for horizontal and vertical alignments simultaneous. In order to represent whole area of the rural highway, the models should be ew-analyzed with vast data related with road alignment factor in the near future.

  • Recently, with the existing speed-management by law enforcements and physical speed-reduction facilities, the country newly adopted Driver Feedback Sign (DFS) system, which displays driving speed in order to guide the driver to an advisable driving condition. DFS is mainly used in school zones due to reasons related to the ITS. Accordingly, because it is predictable that DFS will result in speed-reduction without legal forces and would have an effect on physical speed-reduction facilities, intersection, crosswalks, and road-alignments, this study will try to verify the efficiency of DFS by researching the vehicle speed in national highways and school zones, which have similar conditions to the urban arterial road. In consequence, on national highways, the drivers had a tendency to travel according to the road-environment such as urban arterial road and not reduce speed voluntarily. In school zones, drivers tend to reduce speed in mornings and afternoons when children travel to school or home, showing that the resulting effect is different according to the road-environment where DFS is installed, and the time slot of the DFS.

  • The present study develops programs simulating the internal pressure change of cars due to the change of external pressure when trains run into or passing each other in a tunnel. A new continuous ventilating system control method has been developed in order to alleviate the aural discomfort of passengers riding a high speed train. This method is based on the change of the charged and discharged flow rate by detecting the air pressures generated outside and inside of the train. When the outside and inside pressure are detected, the speed of the charge or exhaust fans and also the valve opening ratios are changed. The elementary performance of the system is checked using dta of the TGV-K high speed train at a speed of 300km/h. Moreover, applicability of the system to the Koran high speed train at a speed of 350 km/h is ascertained by simulation and its effectiveness as a means to alleviate the ear pains is confirmed. This application of the system to the Korean high speed vehicles running in the speed range of 350km/h is considered to have good prospect.

  • The purpose of this study is to elucidate how walking speed influences on change of angles of lower extremity and ground reaction force in normal and obese people. One group with normal body weight who were experimented at a standard speed of 1.5m/s and the other obese group were experimented at two different walking speeds (standard speed of 1.5m/s and self-selected speed of 1.3m/s). We calculated angles of lower extremity and ground reaction force during stance phase through video recording and platform force measuring. When the obese group walked at the standard speed, dorsi-flexion angle of ankle got bigger and plantar-flexion angle of ankle got smaller, which were not statistically significant. There was no significant difference of knee joint angles between normal and obese group at the same speed walking but significant post hoc only for the first flexion of knee joint in obese group. $F_z1$ was bigger than $F_z3$ in vertical axis for ground reaction force in both groups at the standard speed walking and the same force value at self-selected speed in obese group. $F_y3$ was always bigger than $F_y1$ in anterior-posterior axis in both groups.

  • Exceeding the speed limit during vehicle driving is a key factor in the severity of lots of road accidents, and SLIF(Speed Limit Information Function) application is in the initial phase in Korea. SLIF helps the drivers to observe a speed limit when they are driving by providing alert and informing the current limit speed information based on external data using camera and/or digital map, for that reason, environmental conditions could be causes of SLIF malfunctions. In this study, design adequacy analysis of SLIF in respect of false recognition as the Korea traffic environment has been performed. As tentative results, road conditions and structure of speed limit sign as well as system performance often caused misrecognition.

  • In a power grid that has a high penetration of wind power, the highly-fluctuating output power of wind turbine generators (WTGs) adversely impacts the power quality in terms of the system frequency. This paper proposes a power smoothing scheme of a variable-speed WTG that can smooth its fluctuating output power caused by varying wind speeds, thereby improving system frequency regulation. To achieve this, an additional loop relying on the frequency deviation that operates in association with the maximum power point tracking control loop, is proposed; its control gain is modified with the rotor speed. For a low rotor speed, to ensure the stable operation of a WTG, the gain is set to be proportional to the square of the rotor speed. For a high rotor speed, to improve the power smoothing capability, the control gain is set to be proportional to the cube of the rotor speed. The performance of the proposed scheme is investigated under varying wind speeds for the IEEE 14-bus system using an EMTP-RV simulator. The simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme can mitigate the output power fluctuation of WTGs caused by varying wind speeds by adjusting the control gain depending on the rotor speed, thereby supporting system frequency regulation.

  • The characteristics of dynamic vibration are generally analyzed by an acceleration of a car body of high speed train and the acceleration can be applied to evaluation of running safety. The test of process and the analysis method about it are well explained on UIC Code 518 OR which is the spacial international standard about running safety and dynamic behavior on the line test for railway vehicle. Korean High Speed Train designed to operate at speed 350km/h has been tested on high speed line since it was developed in 2002 and it recorded the highest speed 352.4km/h at the 16th Dec. 2004 in Korea. This paper includes the analysis of running behavior of this train at speed 350km/h and the analysis of dynamic safety is presented in it, extending to the range of high speed while the UIC 518 limit the speed below 200km/h.

  • Electric railway system consists of rolling stock, track, signal and catenary system. ATP system in railway signaling system is the important one grasping the position and velocity of a train. The wayside device of ATP system is installed between rails. Recently, the research about increasing train speed has been developed in total departments of the railroad systems. The study on the information transmission between on-board device and wayside device is required for increasing the train speed in the ATP system. When the train speed is increased as to same transmission distance, the problem on information transmission occurs because the transmission time is decreased. In case that the transmission distance is extended, the transmission time is decreased with respect to the train speed. Therefore, we have to define the standard magnetic field intensity as to the train speed in order to transmit correctly telegram. In this paper, the transmission distance for the telegram is suggested on the basis of the train speed. Also, the standard magnetic field intensity from the wayside device to on-board device is proposed by using transmission distance regarding the train speed in the ERTMS/ETCS system by using Matlab program. Also, BER according to the train speed is presented by calculating electric field intensity from the magnetic field intensity.

  • In the design of sensorless control system for induction motor, high-precision speed estimation is one of the most difficult problems. To solve this problem, the common method is model reference adaptive method (MRAS). MRAS requires accurate motor parameters to estimate rotor speed precisely. However, when motor is running, the variety of temperature and magnetic saturation will lead to the change of motor parameters such as stator resistance and rotor resistance, which will lower the accuracy of the speed estimation. To improve the accuracy and rapidity of speed estimation, this paper analyses the mutual MRAS speed identification based on rotor flux linkage, and proposes an improved mutual MRAS speed identification based on back-EMF. The improved method is verified by Simulink simulation and motor experimental platform based on DSP2812. The results of simulation and experiment indicate that the method proposed by this paper can significantly improve the accuracy of speed identification, and speed up the response of identification.

  • This paper presents a speed controller method based on the disturbance torque observer of high performance brushless DC (BLDC) motor drives. In case of the speed control of robot arms and tracking applications with lower stiffness, we cannot design the speed controller gain to be very large from tile viewpoint of the system stability. Thus, the feedforward compensator using disturbance torque observer was proposed. This method can improve the speed characteristic without increasing the speed controller gain. The enhanced speed control performance can be achieved and the speed response against the disturbance torque can be Improved for high-performance BLDC motor drive systems in which the bandwidth of tile speed controller cannot be made large enough. Consequently, speed control for high-performance BLDC motor drives become improved. The simulation results for BLDC motor drive systems confirm the validity of the proposed method.
