  • Because individual HRTFs (Head-Related Transfer Functions) vary from a person to a person, a HRTF database has been measured by researchers to investigate the inter-subject variation, and to generate high fidelity virtual sound image. Individual HRTFs not only vary between subjects but also vary due to wearing clothes and glasses in daily life. However, influence of different dressing condition on the measured HRTF was not sufficiently investigated. To quantify the effect of wearing clothes and glasses, dummy's HRTF is measured in an anechoic chamber with various dressing condition, and is evaluated in the sense of spectral distortion. HRTFs are measured both in the median plane and in the horizontal plane. In the median plane, under 6kHz, effect of different wearing clothes and glasses is negligible. Over 6kHz, however, effect of clothing distorts HRTF about 6dB in the sense of spectral distortion. Moreover, at high frequencies, effect of glasses is no longer negligible. In the horizontal plane, at some azimuths, even additional light cloth over the dummy can change the spectrum of HRTF (6dB spectral distortion) especially when sound source is at contralateral positions. Therefore, HRTF measurement with different wearing conditions can broaden the capability of HRTF customization whose technique utilizes a HRTF database.

  • This study provides comprehensive assessment results for the most recent high-resolution regional climatology in the East/Japan Sea by comparing with the various existing climatologies. This new high-resolution climatology is generated based on the Optimal Interpolation (OI) method with individual profiles from the World Ocean Database and gridded World Ocean Atlas provided by the National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI). It was generated from the recent previous study which had a primary focus to solve the abnormal horizontal gradient problem appearing in the other high-resolution climatology version of NCEI. This study showed that this new OI field simulates well the meso-scale features including closed-curve temperature spatial distribution associated with eddy formation. Quantitative spatial variability was compared to the other four different climatologies and significant variability at 160 km was presented through a wavelet spectrum analysis. In addition, the general improvement of the new OI field except for warm bias in the coastal area was confirmed from the comparison with serial observation data provided by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute's Korean Oceanic Data Center.

  • portable white space device(WSD) obeying the Korean regulations of TV white space(TVWS) can cause harmful interference to a digital TV receiver residing at the same pixel around the edge of the digital TV service coverage for the case with a changed propagation environment. In order to solve this problem, we propose a method to allocate the resource of a hybrid WSD based on TVWS geo-location DB with spectrum sensing. Using the received power of digital TV signal through the spectrum sensing, a hybrid WSD can calculate the maximum permitted EIRP based on location probability. Based on the accurate allocation method proposed in this paper, it is possible to satisfy the Korean TVWS regulations and to eliminate the harmful interference to TV receivers nearby the hybrid WSD.

  • Speech enhancement is performed to improve intelligibility and quality of the noise-corrupted speech. In this paper, speech enhancement performance was compared using different loss functions in time and frequency domains. This study proposes a combination of loss functions to utilize advantage of each domain by considering both the details of spectrum and the speech waveform. In our study, Scale Invariant-Source to Noise Ratio (SI-SNR) is used for the time domain loss function, and Mean Squared Error (MSE) is used for the frequency domain, which is calculated over the complex-valued spectrum and magnitude spectrum. The phase loss is obtained using the sin function. Speech enhancement result is evaluated using Source-to-Distortion Ratio (SDR), Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality (PESQ), and Short-Time Objective Intelligibility (STOI). In order to confirm the result of speech enhancement, resulting spectrograms are also compared. The experimental results over the TIMIT database show the highest performance when using combination of SI-SNR and magnitude loss functions.

  • In this paper, we propose a two-step noise compensation algorithm in feature extraction for achieving robust speech recognition. The proposed method frees us from requiring a priori information on noisy environments and is simple to implement. First, in frequency domain, the Harmonics-based Spectral Subtraction (HSS) is applied so that it reduces the additive background noise and makes the shape of harmonics in speech spectrum more pronounced. We then apply a judiciously weighted variance Feature Vector Normalization (FVN) to compensate for both the channel distortion and additive noise. The weighted variance FVN compensates for the variance mismatch in both the speech and the non-speech regions respectively. Representative performance evaluation using Aurora 2 database shows that the proposed method yields 27.18% relative improvement in accuracy under a multi-noise training task and 57.94% relative improvement under a clean training task.

  • In this paper an intrusion detection system technique of wireless Ad Hoc network is explained and the advantage of making them work in IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee wireless standard is also discussed. The methodology that is mentioned here is intrusion detection architecture based on a local intrusion database [1]. An ad hoc network is a collection of nodes that is connected through a wireless medium forming rapidly changing topologies. Due to increased connectivity (especially on the Internet), and the vast spectrum of financial possibilities that are opening up, more and more systems are subject to attack by intruders. An ideal IDS should able to detect an anomaly caused by the intruders quickly so that the misbehaving node/nodes can be identified and appropriate actions (e.g. punish or avoid misbehaving nodes) can be taken so that further damage to the network is minimized

  • Understanding dietary habits is one of the most important factors in studying food webs and other ecological processes. Here we designed universal primers to amplify portions of the 18S and 28S rDNA sequences to examine gut contents using PCR techniques. The gut contents of sailfin sandfish (Arctoscopus japonicus) and pacific squid (Todarodes pacificus) were examined. In total, 11 families of prey were identified with 18S and 28S rDNA using the universal primers. The DNA sequence data indicated that the primer sets successfully amplified a wide spectrum of species and represented gut contents in a relatively convenient way. We found that information in the NCBI database was not yet sufficient to discriminate the species we isolated. In addition, technology for the separation of heterogeneous PCR products and better resolution and quantification protocols would help increase data accuracy.

  • The vector Taylor series (VTS) based method usually employs clean speech Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) when compensating speech feature vectors or adapting the parameters of trained HMMs. It is well-known that noisy speech HMMs trained by the Multi-condition TRaining (MTR) and the Multi-Model-based Speech Recognition framework (MMSR) method perform better than the clean speech HMM in noisy speech recognition. In this paper, we propose a method to use the noise-adapted HMMs in the VTS-based speech feature compensation method. We derived a novel mathematical relation between the train and the test noisy speech feature vector in the log-spectrum domain and the VTS is used to estimate the statistics of the test noisy speech. An iterative EM algorithm is used to estimate train noisy speech from the test noisy speech along with noise parameters. The proposed method was applied to the noise-adapted HMMs trained by the MTR and MMSR and could reduce the relative word error rate significantly in the noisy speech recognition experiments on the Aurora 2 database.

  • In this paper, we propose a personal-computer-based wireless data access system, which use DS/SS(Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum) method and the ISM band of 2.44GHz radio frequency. By applying hi-directional transmission between wireless handy terminals and PCs or servers, it can be easily connected with any kinds of database systems such as Oracle, MS-SQL and MS-ACCESS. Therefore, it could be economically adopted as peripheral equipments for ERP or SCM systems.
