  • Four 3,4-seco-lupane trierpenoids were isolated from the MeOH extract of the leaves of Acanthopanax divaricatus forma flavi-flos Yook by using various column chromatography. The chemical structures of isolates were identified as chiisanogenin, chiisanoside, isochiisanoside and 11-deoxyisochiisanoside on the basis of physico-chemical and spectroscopic date($^1H-NMR,\;^{13}C-NMR$M$, 2D-NMR and FAB-MS). These compounds were isolated for the first time from A. divaricatus forma flavi-flos.

  • Benzoylpyridinium and lutidinium salts containing$ [MoO(NCS)_5]^{2-}$ have been synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by spectroscopic, magnetic susceptibility and conductivity studies. Benzoylpyridinium and lutidinium oxopentaisothiocyanatomolybdates(Ⅴ) arise from d-d and charge transfer transitions. The magnetic moments of the complexes are close to the spin-only values. The complex anions are mononuclear containing N-bonded $NCS^-$ ligand.

  • Although the currently available surface spectroscopic techniques provide powerful means of studying atoms and simple molecules on surfaces, the identification of complex molecules and functional groups is a major concern in surface analysis. This article describes a recently developed method of surface molecular analysis based on reactive ion scattering (RIS) of low energy (< 100 eV) $Cs^+$ beams. The RIS method can detect surface molecules via a mechanism in which a $Cs^+$ projectile picks up an adsorbate from the surface during the scattering process. The basic principles of the method are reviewed and its applications are discussed by showing several examples from studies of molecules and their reactions on surfaces.

  • As the continued studies for Korean cultivated rhubarb, MeOH extract of the leaves was fractionated with ether, ethylacetate, and n-butanol. From the ethyl acetate fraction of MeOH extract, one flavone glycoside, apigenin-8-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside(vitexin, $C_{21}H_{20}O_{10}$) and from the n-BuOH fraction of MeOH extract, two flavonol glycosids, kaempferol-3-O-(2,6-di-O-rhamnopyranosyl)-${\beta}$-D-galactopyranoside$(C_{33}H_{40}O_{19})$and quercetin-3-O-rutinoside(rutin, $C_{27}H_{30}O_{16}$) were isolated and identified through the physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences(UV, IR, NMR, Mass) respectively.

  • As one of the studies for Korean cultivated Rhubarb, which has been used stomachic bitter, laxative and purgative, etc, MeOH extract of the leaves was fractionated with ether, ethylacetate. From the ether fraction of MeOH extract, two anthraquinone derivatives, 1,6,8-trihydroxy-3-methyl anthraquinone(emodin, $C_{15}H_{10}O_5$), 1,6,8-trihydroxy-3-hydroxymethyl anthraquinone (citrerosein, $C_{15}H_{10}O_6$) and from the ethyl acetate fraction of MeOH extract, one anthraquinone derivative, emodin-8-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside$(C_{21}H_{20}O_{10})$ were isolated and identified through the physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences(UV, IR, NMR, Mass), respectively.

  • The studies were camied out to evaluate the constituents in the leaves of Crataegus pinnatifida var. psilosa (Rosaceae) continuously. From the BuOH fraction of the MeOH extract, four flavonoid compounds, hyperoside (1), vitexin (2), 3"-O-rhamnosylvitexin (3) and $quercetin-3-O-{\alpha}-L-rhamnopyranoslyl-(1{\rightarrow}6)-{\beta}$-D-galactopyranoside (4) were isolated and identified on the basis of their physico-chemical properties and spectroscopic evidences by comparison with authentic samples.

  • A new furofuran lignan (1) was isolated from the n-butanol fraction of the methanolic extract of the leaves of Petasites japonicus (Sieb. et Zucc.) Maxim. (Compositae). The structure of compound 1 was determined to be $2{\alpha}-(4'-hydroxy-3'-methoxyphenyl)-6{\alpha}-(4"-hydroxy-3"-methoxyphenyl)-8{\alpha}-hydroxy-3, 7-dioxabicyclo[3.3.0]octane\;4'-O-({\beta}-D-glucopyranoside)$ by spectroscopic methods including 2D-NMR. In further studies, it was found that the compound 1 expressed an antioxidant activity in DPPH radical scavenging assay, and moreover, ameliorated the seizure in kainic acid-treated mice.

  • Impatiens textori Miquel (Balsaminaceae) is an annual plant growing in most parts of Korea. The herb of this plant has been used as a medicine for external application for the snake poison and the bruise. From the herbs of this plant, two flavone glycosides were isolated and the structures were elucidated by chemical and spectroscopic methods. The compounds were identified as apigenin 7-O-glucoside (cosmosiin) (I) and luteolin 7-O-glucoside (II). These compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time.
