  • In this paper, we first present the properties of the graph which maximize the spectral radius among all graphs with prescribed degree sequence. Using these results, we provide a somewhat simpler method to determine the unicyclic graph with maximum spectral radius among all unicyclic graphs with a given degree sequence. Moreover, we determine the bicyclic graph which has maximum spectral radius among all bicyclic graphs with a given degree sequence.

  • Spectral clustering has become one of the most popular clustering approaches in recent years. Similarity graph constructed on the data is one of the key factors that influence the performance of spectral clustering. However, the similarity graphs constructed by existing methods usually contain some unreliable edges. To construct reliable similarity graph for spectral clustering, an efficient method based on Markov random walk (MRW) is proposed in this paper. In the proposed method, theMRW model is defined on the raw k-NN graph and the neighbors of each sample are determined by the probability of the MRW. Since the high order transition probabilities carry complex relationships among data, the neighbors in the graph determined by our proposed method are more reliable than those of the existing methods. Experiments are performed on the synthetic and real-world datasets for performance evaluation and comparison. The results show that the graph obtained by our proposed method reflects the structure of the data better than those of the state-of-the-art methods and can effectively improve the performance of spectral clustering.

  • Zhai and Lin recently proved that if G is an n-vertex connected 𝜃(1, 2, r + 1)-free graph, then for odd r and n ⩾ 10r, or for even r and n ⩾ 7r, one has ${\rho}(G){\leq}{\sqrt{{\lfloor}{\frac{n^2}{4}}{\rfloor}}}$, and equality holds if and only if G is $K_{{\lceil}{\frac{n}{2}}{\rceil},{\lfloor}{\frac{n}{2}}{\rfloor}}$. In this paper, for large enough n, we prove a sharp upper bound for the spectral radius in an n-vertex H-free non-bipartite graph, where H is 𝜃(1, 2, 3) or 𝜃(1, 2, 4), and we characterize all the extremal graphs. Furthermore, for n ⩾ 137, we determine the maximum number of edges in an n-vertex 𝜃(1, 2, 4)-free non-bipartite graph and characterize the unique extremal graph.

  • Combined with the indeterminate boundaries of spatial objects, n:m correspondences makes an object-based matching be a complex problem. In this study, we model the boundary of a polygon object with fuzzy model and describe their overlapping relations as a weighted bipartite graph. Then corresponding pairs including 1:0, 1:1, 1:n and n:m relations are identified using a spectral singular value decomposition.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multi-scale connected coherence tree algorithm (MCCTA) by improving the connected coherence tree algorithm (CCTA). In contrast to many multi-scale image processing algorithms, MCCTA works on multiple scales space of an image and can adaptively change the parameters to capture the coarse and fine level details. Furthermore, we design a Multi-scale Connected Coherence Tree algorithm plus Spectral graph partitioning (MCCTSGP) by combining MCCTA and Spectral graph partitioning in to a new framework. Specifically, the graph nodes are the regions produced by CCTA and the image pixels, and the weights are the affinities between nodes. Then we run a spectral graph partitioning algorithm to partition on the graph which can consider the information both from pixels and regions to improve the quality of segments for providing image segmentation. The experimental results on Berkeley image database demonstrate the accuracy of our algorithm as compared to existing popular methods.

  • Spectral clustering is a powerful tool for exploratory data analysis. Many existing spectral clustering algorithms typically measure the similarity by using a Gaussian kernel function or an undirected k-nearest neighbor (kNN) graph, which cannot reveal the real clusters when the data are not well separated. In this paper, to improve the spectral clustering, we consider a robust similarity measure based on the shared nearest neighbors in a directed kNN graph. We propose two novel algorithms for spectral clustering: one based on the number of shared nearest neighbors, and one based on their closeness. The proposed algorithms are able to explore the underlying similarity relationships between data points, and are robust to datasets that are not well separated. Moreover, the proposed algorithms have only one parameter, k. We evaluated the proposed algorithms using synthetic and real-world datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms not only achieve a good level of performance, they also outperform the traditional spectral clustering algorithms.

  • In this paper, we propose a new scheme for geometry coding of three-dimensional (3-D) mesh models using a fixed spectral basis. In order to code the mesh geometry information, we generate a fixed spectral basis using the dual graph derived from the 3-D mesh topology. After we partition a 3-D mesh model into several independent sub-meshes to reduce coding complexity, the mesh geometry information is projected onto the generated orthonormal bases which are the eigenvectors of the Laplacian matrix of the 3-D mesh. Finally, spectral coefficients are coded by a quantizer and a variable length coder. The proposed scheme can not only overcome difficulty of generating a fixed spectral basis, but also reduce coding complexity. Moreover, we can provide an efficient multi-resolution representation of 3-D meshes.

  • Graph partitioning provides an important tool for data clustering, but is an NP-hard combinatorial optimization problem. Spectral clustering where the clustering is performed by the eigen-decomposition of an affinity matrix [1,2]. This is a popular way of solving the graph partitioning problem. On the other hand, semidefinite relaxation, is an alternative way of relaxing combinatorial optimization. issuing to a convex optimization[4]. In this paper we present a semidefinite programming (SDP) approach to graph equi-partitioning for clustering and then we use eigen-decomposition to obtain an optimal partition set. Therefore, the method is referred to as semidefinite spectral clustering (SSC). Numerical experiments with several artificial and real data sets, demonstrate the useful behavior of our SSC. compared to existing spectral clustering methods.

  • In this paper, we show that if G is strongly regular then the Gallai graph Γ(G) and the anti-Gallai graph ∆(G) of G are edge-regular. We also identify conditions under which the Gallai and anti-Gallai graphs are themselves strongly regular, as well as conditions under which they are 2-connected. We include also a number of concrete examples and a discussion of spectral properties of the Gallai and anti-Gallai graphs.
