  • Nanometer-sized structures are being applied to many devices including micro/nano electronics, optoelectronics, quantum devices, MEMS/NEMS, biosensors, etc. Especially, the thin film with submicron thickness is a basic structure for fabricating these devices, but its mechanical behaviors are not well understood. The mechanical properties of the thin film are different from those of the bulk structure and are difficult to measure because of its handling inconvenience. Several techniques have been applied to mechanical characterization of the thin film, such as nanoindentation test, micro/nano tensile test, strip bending test, etc. In this study, we focus on the strip bending test because of its high accuracy and moderate specimen preparation efforts, and measure Au thin film, which is a very popular material in micro/nano electronic devices. Au film is deposited on Si substrate by evaporation process, of which thickness is 100nm. Using the strip bending test, we obtain elastic modulus, yield and ultimate tensile strength, and residual stress of Au thin film.

  • The main objectives were to investigate the suitability of CaO crucible for melting TiAl alloys and to develop investment mold for investment casting of TiAl alloys. TiAl alloy specimen were prepared by plasma arc furnace under argon atmosphere. After melting of TiAl alloy using CaO crucible, the results showed that there is little contamination of oxygen in the TiAl bulk. Conventional vacuum induction furnaces can be readily adaptable to produce cast parts of TiAl without high skilled techniques. The determination of optical metallography and microhardness profiles in investment cast TiAl alloy rods has allowed the gradation of the relative thermal stability of the oxides examined. The molds used for the present study were $ZrO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, CaO stabilized $ZrO_2$ and $ZrSiO_4$. Even although high temperature of mold preheating, $Al_2O_3$ mold is a promising mold material for investment casting of TiAl alloys in terms of thermal stability, cost and handling strength. It is important to take thermal stability and preheating temperature of mold into consideration for investment casting of TiAl alloys.

  • Although the demand for histopathological examinations has been increasing, medical accidents in management of specimens also have been increasing because most of the examinations are processed manually which can cause careless handing, confusing information and mismatching during the procedure. In the future, histopatological examination will be used frequently for handing incurable diseases and verification of new drug. Thus, efficient and error-free management system for handling personalized medical history and test results is infallibly necessary. In this paper, I have proposed an integrated printing system for informatization of histopathological examination that support the u-Healthcare environment based on RFID in near future. The proposed system supports systematization of whole examination process and information of pathological samples. This system will contribute to reduction of costs, improvement of operational efficiency, and mostly fundamental prevention of medical accidents.

  • Objectives: Oral bacterial samples included subgingival, supragingival, and saliva plaques. As the diversity and number of microorganisms deffer depending on the area of the oral cavity and the method used, an appropriate and reliable collection method is important. The present study investigated oral bacterial sampling methods. Methods: Supragingival dental plaque was collected from the buccal and lingual tooth surfaces of study participants using sterilized cotton swabs. Plaques were collected from the subgingival area using a sterilized curette. Bacterial genomic DNA was extracted using MagNA Pure 96 DNA and Viral NA low-volume kits. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed using the PowerCheckTM Periodontitis Pathogens Multiplex Real-time PCR kit. Results: Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum of the orange complex were not observed in the subgingival biofilms of all study participants. For Porphyromonas. gingivalis, a significant correlation was observed between supragingival, subgingival, and total tooth surface biofilms. Compared to the supragingival and subgingival biofilmss, total tooth surface biofilm exhibited the highest bacterial count when the inswabbing method was used. Conclusions: Based on these findings, the supragingival swab method is recommended for oral bacterial research.

  • Bombina orientalis, or Korean fire-bellied toad is belonging to Class Amphinia, Order Anura, Family Bombinatoridae, Genus Bombina. Ecological characteristics, such as small size, slow moving and swimming, gentle attitude to other species, under laboratory and/or wild condition lead the toad as suitable experimental animals with easy handling. Seasonal reproductive biology except breeding season (usually from Apr. to late Jun.) are unknown still caused by sampling methods for hibernating specimens have not been established yet. Most species of amphibian, include B. orientalis, are declined around the world related with global warming, therefore, wild caught specimen for any purposes must be limited controled soon. Even though, some pre-studies of biotope for increasing biodiversity have been reported, construction of an artificial biotope to get natural breeding cycling specimen for study of amphibian reproduction is unique modelling and only trial. In an effort to set year-round sampling for study of reproduction of B. orientalis, we suggest protocols for planning, construction manual and SOP(Standard Operation Process) to manage amphibian biotope. During pilot operation of a designed and constructed biotope, the seasonal acclimation during winter hibernation of B. orientalis were successful. It will be helpful for studying the reproductive biology of wild amphibians in temperate region and allow to get reasonable research conditions in amphibian laboratory.

  • Object: In the present study, we compared the positive cytodiagnostic test rates with discrepancies using self-collection devices for cervical cancer screening. We made this survey to examine whether or not our self-smear preparation method using the Kato self-collection device contributed to an improved rate of detecting atypical cells compared with existing recommended preparation methods. Methods: Specimens were collected at 14 facilities handling self-collection methods, and samples were collected by a physician in 2 facilities. The chisquared test was performed using the SPSS ver. 20 statistical software to determine the relationships between the positive cytodiagnostic rate, specimen preparation methods, and self-collection devices. Results: Collecting cells using the Kato self-collection device and preparing liquid-based specimens, we obtained a significantly higher rate of positive cytodiagnosis and our results were equal to those obtained with the direct method. Conclusions: Taking into consideration increased needs for screening using the self-collection method in future, with even more improved test accuracy, a screening test that is acceptable to society needs to be established.

  • Objectives : Among the various types of minimally invasive spine surgeries, thoracoscopic surgery is becoming more widely accepted and increasingly utilized. This report delineates our clinical experience using thoracoscopy to resect herniated thoracic discs in 16 patients who suffered from myelopathy or intolerable radiculopathy. Patients and Methods : Between Mar. 1997 and Sep. 1999, 16 consecutive patients underwent thoracoscopic discectomy for treatment of herniated thoracic discs. There were 12 men and 4 women(mean age 43.5 years ; range 18-61 years). Eleven patients presented with myelopathic signs and symptoms from spinal cord compression and 5 patients had incapacitating thoracic radicular pain without myelopathy. The surgical level was varied between T3 and T12. The pathology of specimen were 11 hard discs and 5 soft discs herniations. Thoracoscopic techniques were performed with long narrow spine instruments and high speed drill through 3 or 4 ports under one lung ventilated general anesthesia. During the operation three patients were converted to open thoracotomy due to intolerable one lung ventilation, excessive bleeding and inadequate operation field. The mean operation time was 264min.(range : 100-420min.), and postoperative mean admission period was 11 days. Results : Clinical and neurological outcomes were good in all patients(mean follow-up period 20 months). Among the eleven myelopathic patients, 8 improved neurologically, and 3 stabilized. Among the five radiculopathic patients, 4 recovered completely and no patient had worsened. Postoperative complications were pleural effusion in one case, intercostal neuralgia in one, delayed hemopneumothorax in one, prolonged air leakage in one and pneumonia in one case. Conclusions : Thoracoscopic discectomy needs a steep learning curve to be familiar to anatomical space and handling of endoscopic instruments. However, it is technically feasible and can be effectively performed with acceptable results.

  • Objective: This study was aimed to identify the incidence and risk factors of vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) colonization in neurosurgical practice of field, with particular attention to intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on the Neurosurgical ICU (NICU), during the period from January. 2005 to December. 2007, in 414 consecutive patients who had been admitted to the NICU. Demographics and known risk factors were retrieved and assessed by statistical methods. Results: A total of 52 patients had VRE colonization among 414 patients enrolled, with an overall prevalence rate of 6.1%. E. faecium was the most frequently isolated pathogen, and 92.3% of all VRE were isolated from urine specimen. Active infection was noticed only in 2 patients with bacteremia and meningitis. Relative antibiotic agents were third-generation cephalosporin in 40%, and vancomycin in 23%, and multiple antibiotic usages were also identified in 13% of all cases. Multivariate analyses showed Glasgow coma scale (GCS) score less than 8, placement of Foley catheter longer than 2 weeks, ICU stay over 2 weeks and presence of nearby VRE-positive patients had a significantly independent association with VRE infection. Conclusion: When managing the high-risk patients being prone to be infected VRE in the NICU, extreme caution should be paid upon. Because prevention and outbreak control is of ultimate importance, clinicians should be alert the possibility of impending colonization and infection by all means available. The most crucial interventions are careful hand washing, strict glove handling, meticulous and active screening, and complete segregation.

  • To improve accuracy of the immunohistochemical testing and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) study as well as a routine histology diagnosis in breast cancer, quality improvement for optimal tissue handling is mandatory. We evaluate fraction defective of 7107 blocks from 349 breast cancer patients, who underwent surgical treatment at Samsung Medical Center Seoul, Korea from January 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010. We decided pre-improvement period from January, 2009 to June, 2009. In the first quality improvement period (July, 2009 to September, 2009) we made improvements in protocol of gross examination. In the second quality improvement period (October, 2009 to December, 2009) we attempted more effective formalin fixation such as frequent exchange of formalin and use of separate fixation container for each case. In the third quality improvement period (January, 2010 to March, 2010) improvement of tissue processor was performed. We achieved a marked reduction of fraction defective (9-16%) through efforts to improve quality of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded blocks when compared to pre-improvement period.

  • Selective Laser Melting is one of the representative 3D printing techniques for handling metal materials. The main factors influencing the characteristics of structures fabricated by the SLM method include the build-up angle of structures, laser power, laser scan speed, and scan spacing. In this study, the tensile properties of AlSi10Mg alloys were investigated by considering the build-up angle of tensile test specimens, laser scanning speed and scan spacing as variables. The yield stress, tensile strength, and elongation were considered as tensile properties. From the test results, it was confirmed that the yield stress values were lowered in the order of 0, 45, and 90 based on the manufacturing direction of the tensile specimen. The maximum yield stress value was obtained at 1870 mm / min based on the laser scan speed. The yield stress size decreased with decreasing scan speed. Based on the laser scan spacing, as the value increases, the yield stress increases, but the variation is smaller than the other test criteria. The tendency of the tensile strength and elongation variation depending on the test conditions was difficult to understand.
