  • Water tree degradations have been considered as one of the most important causes of failure in underground distribution cables with polymeric insulation. Water tree growth is a preliminary step in the sequence of electrical tree initiation and electrical breakdown of the insulation. In this paper, needle electrode is made use of the etching methods and the pellet type specimen is made to observe the water tree in succession. In previous methods are able to observe the tree degradations without cutting and dyeing. The water tree image is recorded on VTR with CCD camera. The tree length of X, Y axis direction and aging area(treeing area) are calculated with image measurement. As a result of this study, water tree is observed by non-destructive method. Electrical tree is initiated from needle electrode tip only but water tree is initiated from total area of water electrode. Electrical tree owing to water treeing is initiated at low electric field and grown with discontinuously. Namely, water tree is shown up a different characteristics of tree growth.

  • Water treeing in underground distribution power cable is not easy to observe by nondestructive method and it has very complex patterns. This study describes the principles and practices of a continuous observation of initiation and growth of tree in polymeric insulation material using an image measurement technique. Using this technique we could observe water tree and the growing process of electrical tree due to the water tree and the growing process of electrical tree due to the water tree. All of these growing process is analyzed quantitatively by image measurement program composed of borland c++. We fabricated the thin film type specimen to observe water tree easier and also the needle electrode was prepared by etching method using electrolytes. Initiation and the growth of three was observed somewhat different depending on the applied voltage and the water electrode. AgNO$_3$solution electrode accelerates the initiation and the growth of water tree, compared to those of distilled water electrode. The water and the electrical tree occurred by water tree has discontinuous growth characteristic.

  • This paper is to investigate the tree growth phenomena and the characteristics of $\varepsilon$' and tan$\delta$ for the effect of ultrasonic wave on polymer insulation material. The conclusions are as follows. 1) As the pressure amplitude of ultrasonic wave is larger and its irradiated time is longer, tree inception voltage and its breakdown voltage in specimen are smaller, and tree growing is faster. 2) As the irradiated quantity of ultrasonic wave is more increased, the value of tan$\delta$ is larger, but the value of $\varepsilon$' is almost constant. 3) The effect by the pressure amplitude of ultrasonic wave is greater than that by its irradiated time on the insulation characteristics of polymer material.

  • This paper is measured partial discharge of low density polyethylene by using acoustic emission measuring method when the electrical tree grow its length in LDPE. Acoustic emission's pulses and its amplitudes of partial discharge are measured by acoustic emission measuring devices. Theorem of skewness are used for breakdown prediction of LDPE. So, it is found that the breakdown of LDPE could be predicted by its skewness's value. There are two kind of specimen of no void and specimen of artificial void, this one's electrical tree grows very faster than that one's.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial effect of tea tree oil in denture cleaners. A self-curing denture resin was used to make the experimental specimen ($12mm{\times}2mm$). A saline solution was used as the control. To observe surface changes after cleaning, the microhardness and color of the experimental specimen's surface were analyzed. For the antibacterial activity test, Candida albicans was used. The microhardness and color of the surface remained unchanged after cleaning. The result of the antibacterial activity test revealed that the tea tree oil-containing solutions had a more enhanced antibacterial effect than did the saline solution. Therefore, these results suggest that the tea tree oil-containing solution is a promising denture cleaners.

  • Gwangtan-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do was classified as a 4 grade age-class deciduous tree forest, however as a result of vegetation survey, this site was found to consist of natural forest with deciduous trees, thus causing difficulty in judging which age class it belongs to. Subsequently, the necessity of drawing up a detailed stock map plan was raised. For this reason, this research was designed to propose a mapping method for a detailed stock map plan based on a detailed survey on actual vegetation, vegetation structure, and analysis data on tree rings. The detailed analysis of actual vegetation pattern showed that there exist 22 patterns of vegetation, in which the natural forest has 11 patterns, such as Quercus mongolica forest and Q. variabilis forest, etc. while the artificial forest was found to have 6 patterns including Castanea crenata, etc. In order to verify their age-class, this research measured a tree age by collecting 42 quadrats and 89 specimen tree cores on the basis of a detailed actual vegetation map; as a result, an artificial forest and oak trees with small diameters located at low-lying areas, was categorized as 2-grade age class(covering 29.8%), and other areas were judged to be available for land use as 3-grade age-class(covering 57.6%) while the areas judged to be 4-or-more grade age-class (covering 8.8%) was impossible for land use because they are located on a steep slope ridge line on a boundary. In case a proposed site for a small-scale development is judged as a natural forest with deciduous trees as mentioned above, it is necessary that a detailed stock map plan should be drawn up through a detailed investigation into actual vegetation and analysis of plant gathering structure & specimen trees. A detailed stock map plan includes the data that makes it possible to comprehensively judge natural property, scarcity, and diversity of vegetation; thus, it is considered that a detailed stock map plan will be useful in judging the development propriety of a small-scale site.

  • This paper presents a statistical approach to analyze electrical tree inception voltage, electrical tree breakdown voltage and tree breakdown time of unsaturated polyester resin subjected to AC voltage. The aim of this work was to show that Weibull and lognormal distribution may not be the most suitable distributions for analysis of electrical treeing data. In this paper, an investigation of statistical distributions of electrical tree inception voltage, electrical tree breakdown voltage and breakdown time data was performed on 108 leaf-like specimen samples. Revelations from the test results showed that Johnson SB distribution is the best fit for electrical tree inception voltage and tree breakdown time data while electrical tree breakdown voltage data is best suited with Wakeby distribution. The fitting step was performed by means of Anderson-Darling (AD) Goodness-of-fit test (GOF). Based on the fitting results of tree inception voltage, tree breakdown time and tree breakdown voltage data, Johnson SB and Wakeby exhibit the lowest error value respectively compared to Weibull and lognormal.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cyclic behavior of steel column-tree moment connections used in steel moment resisting frames. These connections are composed of shop-welded stub beam-to-column connection and field bolted beam-to-beam splice. In this study, the effects of beam splice length on the seismic performance of column-tree connections were experimentally investigated. The change of the beam splice location alters the bending moment and shear force at the splice, and this may affect the seismic performance of column-tree connections. Three full-scale test specimens of column-tree connections with the splice lengths of 900 mm, 1,100 mm, and 1,300 mm were fabricated and tested. The splice lengths were roughly 1/6, 1/7, 1/8 of the beam span length of 7,500 mm, respectively. The test results showed that all the specimens successfully developed ductile behavior without brittle fracture until 5% radians story drift angle. The maximum moment resisting capacity of the specimens showed little differences. The specimen with the splice length of 1,300 mm showed better bolt slip resistance than the other specimens due to the smallest bending moment at the beam splice.

  • In order to characterize insulation properties of epoxy/micro-silica/nano-silicate composite (EMNC), long-term and short-term AC treeing tests were carried out undr non-uniform electric field generated between needle-plate electrodes. In a long-term test, a 10 kV (60 Hz) electrical field was applied to the specimen positioned between the electrodes with a distance of 2.7 mm in an insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$, and a typical branch type electrical tree was observed in the neat epoxy resin and breakdown took place at 1,042 min after applying the 10 kVelectrical field. Meanwhile, the spherical tree with the tree length of $237{\mu}m$ was seen in EMNC-65-0.3 at 52,380 min (36.4 day) and then the test was stopped because the tree propagation rate was too low. In the short-term test, an electrial field was applied to a 3.5 mm-thick specimen at an increasing voltage rate of 0.5 kV/s until breakdown in insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, and the data was estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical insulation breakdown strength for neat epoxy resin was 1,763 kV/mm at $30^{\circ}C$, while that for EMNC-65-0.3 was 2,604 kV/mm, which was a modified value of 47%. As was expected, the breakdown strength decreased at higher test temperatures.
