Gold nanoparticles have recognized a promising drug carriers in many diseases. These nanoparticles could carry anti-inflammatory drugs in the case of muscle injury and for fatigue relief. On the other hand, specific surface of this kind of nanoparticles could be critical in amount of drug they could carry. Therefore, in this study, we explore different methodology and influencing parameters on the specific surface of gold nanoparticles. After specifying the main parameters, different machine learning and artificial neural network are adopted to model the effects of different parameters. Furthermore, response surface methodology is utilized to obtain a quadrilateral relationship between different parameters and specific surface. The results indicate that concentration of the gold salt solution is the most important parameter in increasing the size of gold nanoparticle and, as a consequence, increasing specific surface. Moreover, the ability of gold nanoparticles in prolonging retention of the drugs is discussed in detail.

Terrain modelling is composed of a method using the rectangular grid and another using the triangulated irregular network. The method using the triangulated irregular network is most widely used because it can express the characteristics of the terrain well with only a small amount of information on the terrain and also reduces the rendering time. The process of extracting the surface-specific point and a triangular process is needed to construct such triangulated irregular network. This paper concentrates on the process of extracting the surface-specific point. The 8-direction neighborhood method and other transformed methods of the former method are frequently used to extract the surface-specific point. Another method which eliminates the unnecessary points using the Polygon reduction method is also suggested However, the 8-direction neighborhood method has a big fault of also drawing out some unnecessary points. To resolve such problem, we suggest a method of extracting the surface-specific point using the cross section of the terrain. This method reduces the time to extract the surface-specific point and enables a more precise extraction with less terrain information.

Since carbon fiber epoxy composite materials have excellent properties for structures due to their high specific strength, high specific modulus, high damping and low thermal expansion, the hollow shafts made of carbon fiber epoxy composites have been widely used for power transmission shafts for motor vehicles , spindles of machine tools, motor base, bearing mount for tool up and manufacturing. The molded composite machine elements are not usually accurate enough for mechanical machine elements, which require turning drilling , cutting and grinding. The experiment are surface grinding wheel GC60 to the carbon fiber epoxy composite specimen with respect to staking angle [0]nT , [45]nT, [90]nT on the CNC grinding machine. In this paper, the surface grinding characteristics of composite plate, which are surveyed experimentally and analytically with respect to the grinding force, surface roughness and wheel loading according to the variable depth of cut, wheel velocity and table feed rate are investigated.
Mineralogy and the exposed surface area are two of the most important factors controlling dissolution and weathering rates of soils. The mixture of inorganic and organic materials of various size distributions and structures that constitute soils makes the calculation of weathering rates difficult. The surface area of soil minerals plays an important role in most of programs for calculating the weathering rates and critical loads. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurement is recommended for the measurement of specific surface area. However, BET values measured without organic matter removal are in fact those far all the N2-adsorbed surface areas, including the surfaces covered and aggregated with organisms. Surfaces occupied by organisms are assumed to be more reactive to weathering by organic activities. Therefore, the BET surface area difference before and after organic removal depicts the area occupied by organisms. The present study shows that the BET values after organic matter removal using $H_2$O$_2$ are larger than those without removal by 1.68~4.87 $m^2$/g. This implies that BET measurement without organic removal excludes the reactive area occupied by organisms and that the area occupied by organisms in soils is much larger than expected. It is suggested that specific surface area measurement for calculating weathering rates of mineral soils should be made before and after organic matter removal. The results of a column experiment are presented to demonstrate the potential retarding influence that this organic matter may have on mineral dissolution and weathering.
Activated carbons (ACs) are considered important electrode materials for supercapacitors because their large specific surface areas lead to high charging capacities. In the conventional synthesis of ACs, a substantial amount of carbon is lost during carbonization of a precursor. The development of a method to synthesize ACs in high yield would lower their manufacturing cost. Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of high-specific-surface-area NaOH-AC from carbon prepared via a hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) route, with a higher yield than that achieved through conventional pyrolysis carbonization. The amorphous carbon was derived from HTC of sugar and subsequently activated at 800℃ with various NaOH etchant/C ratios under a N2 atmosphere. The AC prepared at 4:1 NaOH/C exhibited the highest surface area (as high as 2,918 ㎡ g-1) and the highest specific capacitance (157 F g-1 in 1 M aqueous Na2SO4 electrolyte solution) among the NaOH-AC samples prepared in this work. On the basis of their high specific capacitance, the NaOH-ACs prepared from HTC sugar are suitable for use as electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Cell therapeutic agents for treating degenerative brain diseases using neural stem cells are actively being developed. However, few systems have been developed to monitor in real time whether the transplanted neural stem cells are actually differentiated into neurons. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a technology capable of specifically monitoring neuronal differentiation in vivo. In this study, we established a system that expresses cell membrane-targeting red fluorescent protein under control of the Synapsin promoter in order to specifically monitor differentiation from neural stem cells into neurons. In order to overcome the weak expression level of the tissue-specific promoter system, the partial 5' UTR sequence of Creb was added for efficient expression of the cell surface-specific antigen. This system was able to track functional neuronal differentiation of neural stem cells transplanted in vivo, which will help improve stem cell therapies.

Since passenger cars require five wheels including a spare, the weight reduction of wheels without sacrificing performance is important. Recently, the structured components of cars made of steel are replaced by composites. plastics and other nonmetallic materials such as aluminum and magnesium for weight reduction. From these new tried materials are most promising due to their high specific stiffness and specific strength. The composites manufactured by resin transfer molding (RTM) process has not only low cost for the manufacturing but also reduces the lead time and development because the molds for RTM is easy to manufacture. In this work, composite wheels for passenger cars were designed and manufactured by RTM process. Since surface quality of wheels is important for passenger cars, the optimal stacking sequence for composite wheels was selected considering surface quality and mechanical properties. Also, the manufacturing method for the composite mold was depicted.

The electrochemical properties of electric double layer capacitor(EDLC) was studied by controlling pore size distribution and specific surface area of the activated carbon fiber(ACF). The mesoporous ACF, which was prepared by the iron exchange method, showed the tendency of increasing average pore size and decreasing total surface area. The mesoporous ACF (surface area = 2225 $m^2$/g, pore size=1.93 nm) showed increased mesopore(pore size=1~3nm) volume from 0.055 cc/g to 0.408 cc/g compared to its raw ACF. The charging capacity of the EDLC which uses the prepared mesoporous ACF also increased from 0.39 F/$cm^2$ to 0.55 F/$cm^2$. From these results, it can be known that the electrochemical properties of EDLC are mainly dependent on the specific surface area, but above the surface area 2200 $m^2$/g, it is the mesopore volume that affects the performance of the capacitor considerably. Because the increased mesopore volume results in a decreased ion mobility resistance, the charge capacitance is enhanced.
The porosity (including the specific surface area and pore volume-diameter distribution) of montmorillonitic soft rock (MSR) was studied experimentally with an electrochemical treatment, based on which the change in porosity was further analyzed from the perspective of its electrokinetic potential (${\zeta}$ potential) and the isoelectric point of the electric double layer on the surface of the soft rock particles. The variation between the ${\zeta}$ potential and porosity was summarized, and used to demonstrate that the properties of softening, degradation in water, swelling, and disintegration of MSR can be modified by electrochemical treatment. The following conclusions were drawn. The specific surface area and total pore volume decreased, whereas the average pore diameter increased after electrochemical modification. The reduction in the specific surface area indicates a reduction in the dispersibility and swelling-shrinking of the clay minerals. After modification, the ${\zeta}$ potential of the soft rock was positive in the anodic zone, there was no isoelectric point, and the rock had lost its properties of softening, degradation in water, swelling, and disintegration. The ${\zeta}$ potential increased in the intermediate and cathodic zones, the isoelectric point was reduced or unchanged, and the rock properties are reduced. When the ${\zeta}$ potential is increased, the specific surface area and the total pore volume were reduced according to the negative exponent law, and the average pore diameter increased according to the exponent law.

In this paper, we proposed the recognition method that automatically extracts cracks from a surface image acquired by a digital camera and recognizes the directions (horizontal, vertical, -45 degree, and 45 degree) of cracks using the fuzzy single layer perceptron. We compensate an effect of light on a concrete surface image by applying the closing operation, which is one of the morphological techniques, extract the edges of cracks by Sobel masking, and binarize the image by applying the iterated binarization technique. Two times of noise reduction are applied to the binary image for effective noise elimination. After the specific regions of cracks are automatically extracted from the preprocessed image by applying Glassfire labeling algorithm to the extracted crack image, the cracks of the specific region are enlarged or reduced to $30{\times}30$ pixels and then used as input patterns to the fuzzy single layer perceptron. The experiments using concrete crack images showed that the cracks in the concrete crack images were effectively extracted and the fuzzy single layer perceptron was effective in the recognition of the extracted cracks directions.
