Design Parameters of Small Hydro Power Sites for River Systems(II) (소수력발전입지의 수계별 설계변수 특성(II))

  • Small hydropower resources for five major river systems have been studied. The model, which can predict flow duration characteristic of stream, was developed to analyze the variation of inflow caused from rainfall condition. And another model to predict hydrologic performance for small hydropower(SHP) plants is established. Monthly inflow data measured at Andong dam were analyzed. The predicted results from the developed models in this study show that the data were in good agreement with measured results of long term inflow at Andong dam. It was found that the models developed in this study can be used to predict the available potential and technical potential of SHP sites effectively. Based on the models developed in this study, the hydrologic performance for small hydropower sites located in river systems have been analyzed. The results show that the hydrologic performance characteristics of SHP sites had some difference between the river systems. Especially, the specific design flow and specific output of SHP sites located on North Han river and Nakdong river systems had large difference compared with other river systems.

Control of dissolved Oxygen Concentration and Specific Growth Rate in Fed-batch Fermentation (유가식 생물반응기에서의 용존산소농도 및 비성장속도의 제어)

  • A novel control method with automatic tuning of PID controller parameters has been developed for efficient regulation of dissolved oxygen concentration in fed-batch fermentations of Escherichia coli. Agitation speed and oxygen partial pressure in the inlet gas stream were chosen to be the manipulated variables. A heuristic reasoning allowed improved tuning decisions from the supervision of control performance indices and it coule obviate the needs for process assumptions or disturbance patterns. The control input consisted of feedback and feedforword parts. The feedback part was determined by PID control and the feedforward part is determined from the feed rate. The proportional gain was updated on-line by a set of heuristics rules based on the supervision of three performance indices. These indices were output error covariance, the average value of output error, and input covariance, which were calculated on-line using a moving window. The integral and derivative time constants were determined from the period of output response. The specific growth rate was maintained at a low level to avoid acetic acid accumulation and thus to achieve a high cell density. The specific growthe rate was estimated from the carbon dioxide evolution rate. In fed-batch fermentation, the simutaneous control of dissolved oxygen concentration (at 0.2; fraction of saturated value) and specific growth rate (at 0.25$hr^{-1}$) was satisfactory for the entire culture period in spite of the changes in the feed rate and the switching of control input.

  • This work is concerned with the estimation of output derivatives and their use for the design of robust controller for linear systems with systems uncertainties due to modeling errors and disturbance. It is assumed that a nominal transfer function model and Quantitative bounds for system uncertainties are known. The developed control schemes are shown to achieve regulation of the system output and ensures boundedness of the system states without imposing any structural conditions on system uncertainties and disturbances. Output derivative estimation is first conducted trough restructuring of the plant in a specific parameterization. They are utilized for constructing robust nonlinear high-gain feedback controller of a SMC(Sliding Mode Controller) Type. The performances of the developed controller are evaluated and shown to be effective and useful through simulation study.

  • This paper investigates the operational modes of buck dc-dc converters and their energy transmission methods. The operational modes of such converters are classified in two types, discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and continuous conduction mode (CCM). In this paper, the critical inductance relation of DCM and CCM is determined. The equations of the output voltage ripple (OVR) for each mode are obtained for a specific input voltage and load resistance range. The maximum output voltage ripple (MOVR) is also obtained for each mode. The filter size is decreased and the minimum required inductance value is calculated to guarantee the minimization of the MOVR. The experimental and simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC prove the correctness of the presented theoretical concepts.

Effect of Task Direction on the Maximal Pushing, Pulling, Twisting, and Grip Forces

  • Objective:The aims of this study are to understand the effects of task (pushing, pulling, and clockwise and counter clockwise twisting) direction on the maximal output and their grip forces and to explore the relationship between the maximal output and the grip forces. Background: Knowing the normative maximal grip force is not enough to design a good hand tool. The industrial designers should understand the required grip forces in various motions toward a specific direction to make an effective and efficient hand tool. Method: Eighteen healthy volunteers participated in the series of isometric maximal output force tests. A custom-made force measuring equipment collected the output and the grip forces for three seconds. Force measurements along the vertical, coronal and sagittal axes were randomly repeated three times. Results: The pulling was strongest and the pushing was weakest in all directions. The effect of motion on the output forces varied in different directions. The corresponding grip force increased in the order of pushing, pulling, clockwise twisting, and counter clockwise twisting in all directions. The maximal output and their grip forces were highly correlated but the relationship was affected by motion and direction. The regression coefficient was greatest in pulling and smallest in clockwise twisting. Conclusion: The effect of motion on the output forces varied in different directions. The maximal output and their grip forces were correlated but the relationship was affected by motion and direction. Application: Findings of this study can be valuable information for industrial designers to develop more productive hand tools and work stations to help preventing the musculoskeletal disorders at work.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the distribution rate of R&D input on R&D output in major manufacturing industrial sector. The distribution rate is estimated on time-series data for the period 1980 to 1996. The data used in this study can be divided into the two categories. 1) R&D output data (Patent, Utility) 2) R&D input data (R&D expenditure, R&D workers) The raw data of R&D expenditure is transformed into R&D stock. And the specific production function is used to represent the interaction between R&D input and output. The production function shows the maximum rate of R&D output that can be achieved by certain given, technologically possible, R&D input combinations. The main findings can be summarized as follows. 1) There was a diminishing return between R&D input and output$(\alpha+\beta<1). 2) R&D output growth was more affected by R&D expenditures than R&D workers. 3) R&D workers were more contributed highly to Patent granted than Utility model.

The Characteristics and Stability Boundary Analysis of Chatter using Neural Network (신경회로망을 이용한 채터 특성 및 안정영역 분석)

  • In this study, the analytic realization of chatter mechanism using radial basis neural network(RBNN) was introduced and compared with the conventional stability analysis. In this regard, the FFT and time series spectrum analysis was used as a criterion for the existence of chatter in end-milling force. The desired coded outputs of chatter was trained and finally converged to desired outputs. The output of the RBNN match well with the conventional desired stability lobe. Using this trained data, the stability boundary of the radial basis neural network was acquired using the contour plotting. As a result, the proposed stability lobe boundary using RBNN consists well with the conventional analytical boundary that is calculated in characteristic equation of transfer function in chatter dynamics. In this RBNN analysis, two input and three output parameters were used in this paper.

  • The object of this article is to study the plausibility of applying human voice warning system to automobiles. Human voice is considered the best tool for warning system in automobiles. For the purpose of comprehending the specific characteristics of relation between noises and properties of the automobiles indoors and voice warning system researcher performed FRF test in order to examine the characteristics of voice output, and FEM simulation to learn the specific properties of the car indoors. And furthermore, surveyed the quality of voice output, using the written inquiry to examine members. The result of the study shows that it is much possible to apply voice warning system to automobiles.

  • A FORTRAN code has been developed to calculate thermodynamic properties of 12 kinds of refrigerants. Input variables are temperature and pressure or temperature only depending on the saturation. The program output properties are specific volume, saturation pressure, enthalpy, entropy, specific heats and speed of sound. Sample calculations show that output properties are in very good agreements with thermodynamic tables and charts.
