Nine pig farms were evaluated for the welfare quality in Korea using animal- and environment-based parameters (particularly air quality parameters) during the winter of 2013. The Welfare Quality® (WQ®) protocol consists of 12 criteria within four principles. The WQ® protocol classifies farms into four categories ranging from 'excellent' to 'not classified'. Each of these criteria has specific measures for calculating scores. Calculations for the welfare scores were conducted online using the calculation model in the WQ® protocol. Environment-based parameters like microclimate (i.e., temperature, relative humidity, air speed, and particulate matter), bacteria (total airborne bacteria, airborne total coliform, and airborne total Escherichia coli), concentration of gases (carbon dioxide, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide) were measured to investigate the relationship between animal- and environment-based parameters. Correlations between the results of animal- and environment-based parameters were estimated using spearman correlation coefficient. The overall assessments found that five out of nine farms were 'acceptable', and four farms were 'enhanced'; no farm was 'not classified'. The average score for the four principles across the nine farms, in decreasing order, were 'good feeding' (63.13 points) > 'good housing' (59.26 points) > 'good health' (33.47 points) > 'appropriate behaviors' (25.48 points). In the result of the environment aspect, the relative humidity of farms 2 (93.4%), 3 (100%), and 9 (98%) was much higher than the recommended maximum relative humidity of 80%, and four out of the nine farms had ammonia concentrations greater than 40 ppm. Ammonia had negative correlations with 'positive social behaviors' and positive emotional states: content, enjoying, sociable, playful, lively, happy and it had positive correlations with negative emotional states: aimless, distressed. The concentration of carbon dioxide had negative correlations with positive emotional states; calm, sociable, playful, happy and it had a positive correlation with negative emotional state; aimless. Our results indicate that the control of the environment for growing pigs can help improve their welfare, particularly via good air quality (carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen sulfide).

In accordance with the urban development project, cases of constructing temporary wall structures for ground excavation in the vicinity of railway structures are increasing. In addition, the complaints about train vibration are also increasing from people living in large buildings newly built after installing the temporary wall structures. In order to solve this problem, a method for reducing train vibration is considered from the design stage of the building, and a vibration reduction system is installed on the structure when the building is newly constructed. However, the vibration reduction method established at the structure design stage can be determined through the results of field measurements or dynamic numerical analysis for a specific area, and there is a limit to evaluating whether the established vibration reduction method is appropriate due to the lack of objective research data. Therefore, in order to provide objective basic data when establishing a vibration reduction method, this study performed the dynamic numerical analysis for a operating train with a speed 80km/h by applying differently the depths of railway structures, the distances between railways and temporary wall structures, and ground conditions. It was found that the range of influence of a train operating at 80 km/h was within 4.5D of the lateral distance from the railway structure in the case of the condition where the temporary wall was installed.

Due to the climate crisis, various environmental regulations including greenhouse gas reduction are in effect. This is not limited to any specific industry sector, but is affecting the entire industry worldwide. For this reason, the IMO and governments of each country are announcing strategies and policies related to the shipbuilding and shipping industries. The current regulations can be partially resolved through additional facilities such as scrubbers while using existing fossil fuels, but ultimately, the emission of greenhouse gases such as CO2 from the exhaust gases generated by ships must be restricted through energy conversion. To this end, it is necessary to develop fuels that can replace traditional fuels such as oil and natural gas. Among them, hydrogen is attracting attention as a clean energy that does not emit pollutants when used as a fuel. However, hydrogen has a wide explosive range and a fast dispersion speed, so research on this is necessary. Therefore, in this paper, when hydrogen leakage occurs in the fuel preparation room of a hydrogen-powered ship, the trend was analyzed and the ventilation characteristics were investigated.
This research measured a concept of mobility which is included objective travel behavior as well as psychological and physical mechanism that influenced travel behavior. And then, this research examined the relation between mobility and the quality of life in elderly drivers. In research 1, to evaluate the reliability and validity of "Mobility Questionnaire(MQ)", we tested "MQ" to 207 drivers aged 20 years and older. In research 2, we examined the mobility level of elderly drivers. Also we investigated the influence that mobility of elderly drivers impacts on their quaility of life. we used "MQ", "Psychological Well-Being Questionnaire(PWBQ)" to 91 drivers aged 65 years and older. To factor analysis, MQ consisted of 'Safe Driving Ability(ADA)', 'Travel Increase(TI)', 'Travel Decrease(TD)', 'Social Activity(SA)', and 'Driving Situational Adaptability(DSA)'. The amount and speed of driving of elderly drivers reduced driving behavior than other drivers. Also, elderly drivers negatively assessed their physical abilities for safe driving and felt a low confidence in specific driving situation. On the other hand, elderly drivers take parts in social activity constructively. A review of the relation of mobility and quality of life showed that mobility of elderly drivers had positive correlation with PWB. Specially, 'ADA', 'SA', and 'DSA' had significant correlations with PWB of elderly drivers. The mobility of elderly drivers had an effect on 'Autonomy', 'Environmental mastery', 'Self-acceptance', and 'Positive relations with others'.
Current speech recognition technology s achieved high performance with the development of hardware devices, however it is insufficient for some applications where high reliability is required, such as voice control of powered wheelchairs for disabled persons. For the system which aims to operate powered wheelchairs safely by voice in real environment, we need to consider that non-voice commands such as user s coughing, breathing, and spark-like mechanical noise should be rejected and the wheelchair system need to recognize the speech commands affected by disability, which contains specific pronunciation speed and frequency. In this paper, we propose non-voice rejection method to perform voice/non-voice classification using both YIN based fundamental frequency(F0) extraction and reliability in preprocessing. We adopted a multi-template dictionary and acoustic modeling based speaker adaptation to cope with the pronunciation variation of inarticulately uttered speech. From the recognition tests conducted with the data collected in real environment, proposed YIN based fundamental extraction showed recall-precision rate of 95.1% better than that of 62% by cepstrum based method. Recognition test by a new system applied with multi-template dictionary and MAP adaptation also showed much higher accuracy of 99.5% than that of 78.6% by baseline system.
Nuclear accidents such as Fukushima Daiichi have highlighted the potential of passive safety systems to replace or complement active safety systems as part of the overall prevention and/or mitigation strategies. In addition, passive systems are key features of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), for which they are becoming almost unavoidable and are part of the basic design of many reactors available in today's nuclear market. Nevertheless, their potential to significantly increase the safety of nuclear power plants still needs to be strengthened, in particular the ability of computer codes to determine their performance and reliability in industrial applications and support the safety demonstration. The PASTELS project (September 2020-February 2024), funded by the European Commission "Euratom H2020" programme, is devoted to the study of passive systems relying on natural circulation. The project focuses on two types, namely the SAfety COndenser (SACO) for the evacuation of the core residual power and the Containment Wall Condenser (CWC) for the reduction of heat and pressure in the containment vessel in case of accident. A specific design for each of these systems is being investigated in the project. Firstly, a straight vertical pool type of SACO has been implemented on the Framatome's PKL loop at Erlangen. It represents a tube bundle type heat exchanger that transfers heat from the secondary circuit to the water pool in which it is immersed by condensing the vapour generated in the steam generator. Secondly, the project relies on the CWC installed on the PASI test loop at LUT University in Finland. This facility reproduces the thermal-hydraulic behaviour of a Passive Containment Cooling System (PCCS) mainly composed of a CWC, a heat exchanger in the containment vessel connected to a water tank at atmospheric pressure outside the vessel which represents the ultimate heat sink. Several activities are carried out within the framework of the project. Different tests are conducted on these integral test facilities to produce new and relevant experimental data allowing to better characterize the physical behaviours and the performances of these systems for various thermo-hydraulic conditions. These test programmes are simulated by different codes acting at different scales, mainly system and CFD codes. New "system/CFD" coupling approaches are also considered to evaluate their potential to benefit both from the accuracy of CFD in regions where local 3D effects are dominant and system codes whose computational speed, robustness and general level of physical validation are particularly appreciated in industrial studies. In parallel, the project includes the study of single and two-phase natural circulation loops through a bibliographical study and the simulations of the PERSEO and HERO-2 experimental facilities. After a synthetic presentation of the project and its objectives, this article provides the reader with findings related to the physical analysis of the test results obtained on the PKL and PASI installations as well an overall evaluation of the capability of the different numerical tools to simulate passive systems.
Purpose: The trend of highway traffic accidents shows a repeating pattern of increase and decrease, with the fatality rate being highest on highways among all road types. Therefore, there is a need to establish improvement measures that reflect the situation within the country. Method: We conducted accident severity analysis using Random Forest on data from accidents occurring on 10 specific routes with high accident rates among national highways from 2019 to 2021. Factors influencing accident severity were identified. Result: The analysis, conducted using the SHAP package to determine the top 10 variable importance, revealed that among highway traffic accidents, the variables with a significant impact on accident severity are the age of the perpetrator being between 20 and less than 39 years, the time period being daytime (06:00-18:00), occurrence on weekends (Sat-Sun), seasons being summer and winter, violation of traffic regulations (failure to comply with safe driving), road type being a tunnel, geometric structure having a high number of lanes and a high speed limit. We identified a total of 10 independent variables that showed a positive correlation with highway traffic accident severity. Conclusion: As accidents on highways occur due to the complex interaction of various factors, predicting accidents poses significant challenges. However, utilizing the results obtained from this study, there is a need for in-depth analysis of the factors influencing the severity of highway traffic accidents. Efforts should be made to establish efficient and rational response measures based on the findings of this research.

North Korea's rapidly advancing drone development and operational capabilities have become a significant threat to South Korea's security. The drone incursions by North Korea in 2014, 2017, and 2022 demonstrate the technological advancement and provocative potential of North Korean drones. This study aims to closely analyze the military threats posed by North Korean drones and seek effective countermeasures. The research examines the development level of North Korean drone technology, its military applications, the characteristics and patterns of recent drone incursions, the adequacy and limitations of South Korea's current response systems, and future countermeasures. For this purpose, domestic and international research literature and media reports were reviewed, and specific North Korean drone incursion cases were analyzed. The results indicate that North Korea's small drones possess technological features such as small size, low altitude, low-speed flight, long-duration flight, and reconnaissance equipment. These drones pose threats that can be utilized for reconnaissance, surveillance, surprise attacks, and terrorism. Additionally, South Korea's current response systems reveal limitations such as inadequate detection and identification capabilities, low interception success rates, lack of an integrated response system, and insufficient specialized personnel and equipment. Therefore, this study suggests various technical, policy, and international cooperative countermeasures, including the development of drone detection and identification technologies, the utilization of diverse drone neutralization technologies, the establishment of legal and institutional foundations, the construction of a cooperative framework among relevant agencies, and the strengthening of international cooperation. The study particularly emphasizes the importance of raising awareness of the North Korean drone threat across South Korean society and unifying national efforts to respond to these threats.
Federated learning has garnered attention as an efficient method for training machine learning models in a distributed environment while maintaining data privacy and security. This study proposes a novel FedRFBagging algorithm to optimize the performance of random forest models in such federated learning environments. By dynamically adjusting the trees of local random forest models based on client-specific data characteristics, the proposed approach reduces communication costs and achieves high prediction accuracy even in environments with numerous clients. This method adapts to various data conditions, significantly enhancing model stability and training speed. While random forest models consist of multiple decision trees, transmitting all trees to the server in a federated learning environment results in exponentially increasing communication overhead, making their use impractical. Additionally, differences in data distribution among clients can lead to quality imbalances in the trees. To address this, the FedRFBagging algorithm selects only the highest-performing trees from each client for transmission to the server, which then reselects trees based on impurity values to construct the optimal global model. This reduces communication overhead and maintains high prediction performance across diverse data distributions. Although the global model reflects data from various clients, the data characteristics of each client may differ. To compensate for this, clients further train additional trees on the global model to perform local optimizations tailored to their data. This improves the overall model's prediction accuracy and adapts to changing data distributions. Our study demonstrates that the FedRFBagging algorithm effectively addresses the communication cost and performance issues associated with random forest models in federated learning environments, suggesting its applicability in such settings.

Digital twin is an M&S (Modeling and Simulation) technology designed to solve or optimize problems in the real world by replicating physical objects in the real world as virtual objects in the digital world and predicting phenomena that may occur in the future through simulation. Digital twins have been elaborately designed and utilized based on data collected to achieve specific purposes in large-scale environments such as cities and industrial facilities. In order to apply this digital twin technology to real life and expand it into user-customized service technology, practical but sensitive issues such as personal information protection and personalization of simulations must be resolved. To solve this problem, this paper proposes a federated learning-based accelerated client training method (FACTS) for personalized digital twins. The basic approach is to use a cluster-driven federated learning training procedure to protect personal information while simultaneously selecting a training model similar to the user and training it adaptively. As a result of experiments under various statistically heterogeneous conditions, FACTS was found to be superior to the existing FL method in terms of training speed and resource efficiency.
