  • Thermal infrared images have the characteristic of being able to detect objects that can not be seen with the naked eye and have the advantage of easily obtaining information of inaccessible areas. However, TIR (Thermal InfraRed) images have a relatively low spatial resolution. In this study, the applicability of the pansharpening algorithm used for satellite imagery on images acquired by the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) was tested. RGB image have higher spatial resolution than TIR images. In this study, pansharpening algorithm was applied to TIR image to create the images which have similar spatial resolution as RGB images and have temperature information in it. Experimental results show that the pansharpening algorithm using the PC1 band and the average of RGB band shows better results for the quantitative evaluation than the other bands, and it has been confirmed that pansharpening results by ATWT (${\grave{A}}$ Trous Wavelet Transform) exhibit superior spectral resolution and spatial resolution than those by HPF (High-Pass Filter) and SFIM (Smoothing Filter-based Intensity Modulation) pansharpening algorithm.

  • Analyses of Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) microwave radiometer (TMI) and precipitation radar (PR) data show that the rainfall inhomogeneity, represented by the coefficient of variation, decreases as rain rate increases at the low resolution (the footprint size of TMI 10 GHz channel). The rainfall inhomogeneity, however, is relatively constant for all rain rates at the high resolution (the footprint size of TMI 37 GHz channel). Consequently, radiometric signatures at lower spatial resolutions are characterized by larger dynamic range and smaller variability than those at higher spatial resolution. Based on the observed characteristics, this study develops a low-resolution (${\sim}40{\times}40$ km) rainfall retrieval algorithm utilizing realistic rainfall distributions in the a-priori databases. The purpose of the low-resolution rainfall algorithm is to make more reliable climatological rainfalls from various microwave sensors, including low-resolution radiometers.

  • This paper is to present an approach for generating coarse resolution (MODIS data) fraction images of forested region in Korea peninsula using forest type area fraction derived from high resolution data (ASTER data) in regional forest area. A 15-m spatial resolution multi-spectral ASTER image was acquired under clear sky conditions on September 22, 2003 over the forested area near Seoul, Korea and was used to select each end-member that represent a pure reflectance of component of forest such as different forest, bare soil and water. The area fraction of selected each end-member and a 500-m spatial resolution MODIS reflectance product covering study area was applied to a linear mixture inversion model for calculating the fraction image of forest component across the South Korea. We found that the area fraction values of each end-member observed from high resolution image data could be used to separate forest cover in low resolution image data.

  • As the utility of an optical satellite image with a high spatial resolution (i.e., fine-scale) has been emphasized, recently, various studies of the land surface monitoring using those have been widely carried out. However, the usefulness of fine-scale satellite images is limited because those are acquired at a low temporal resolution. To compensate for this limitation, the spatiotemporal data fusion can be applied to generate a synthetic image with a high spatio-temporal resolution by fusing multiple satellite images with different spatial and temporal resolutions. Since the spatio-temporal data fusion models have been developed for mid or low spatial resolution satellite images in the previous studies, it is necessary to evaluate the applicability of the developed models to the satellite images with a high spatial resolution. For this, this study evaluated the applicability of the developed spatio-temporal fusion models for KOMPSAT-3A and Sentinel-2 images. Here, an Enhanced Spatial and Temporal Adaptive Fusion Model (ESTARFM) and Spatial Time-series Geostatistical Deconvolution/Fusion Model (STGDFM), which use the different information for prediction, were applied. As a result of this study, it was found that the prediction performance of STGDFM, which combines temporally continuous reflectance values, was better than that of ESTARFM. Particularly, the prediction performance of STGDFM was significantly improved when it is difficult to simultaneously acquire KOMPSAT and Sentinel-2 images at a same date due to the low temporal resolution of KOMPSAT images. From the results of this study, it was confirmed that STGDFM, which has relatively better prediction performance by combining continuous temporal information, can compensate for the limitation to the low revisit time of fine-scale satellite images.

  • Land surface temperature is essential for monitoring abnormal climate phenomena such as UHI (Urban Heat Islands), and for modeling weather patterns. However, the quality of surface temperature obtained from the optical space imagery is affected by many factors such as, revisit period of the satellite, instance of capture, spatial resolution, and cloud coverage. Landsat 8 imagery, often used to obtain surface temperatures, has a high resolution of 30 meters (100 meters rearranged to 30 meters) and a revisit frequency of 16 days. On the contrary, MODIS imagery can be acquired daily with a spatial resolution of about 1 kilometer. Many past attempts have been made using both Landsat and MODIS imagery to complement each other to produce an imagery of improved temporal and spatial resolution. This paper applied machine learning methods and performed downscaling which can obtain daily based land surface temperature imagery of 30 meters.

  • Conventional bipolar surface electromyography(EMG) technique detects only the superimposed electromyographic activity of a large number of motor units due to its low spatial resolution. For the diagnosis of neuromuscular disorder, the information of single MU is required. In this paper, 9 channel array surface electrode system was as designed and MLoG filter was proposed. Also the MCPT(modified convolution processing technique)method was proposed for the improvement of MUAP resolution. For performance evaluation, power spectrum analysis of random data and raw EMG signal comparison of MUAP shape and quantitative estimation of SNR were executed. As a result, the MUAP resolution improvement of 32% was obtained from the standpoint of the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR).

  • Comprehensive measurements for velocity and temperature fields have been conducted. A Micro PIV 2-color LIF system have been setup to measure the buoyancy driven fields in a 1-mm heated channel with low Grashof-Prandtl numbers [$86]. Fluorescence microscopy is combined with an MPIV system to obtain enough intensity images and clear pictures from nano-scale fluorescence particles. The spatial resolution of the Micro PIV system is $75{\mu}m\;by\;67{\mu}m$ and error due to Brownian motion is estimated $1.05\%$. Temperature measurements have achieved the $4.7\;{\mu}m$ spatial resolution with relatively large data uncertainties the present experiment. The measurement uncertainties have been decreased down to less than ${\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$ when measurement resolution is equivalent to $76\;{\mu}m$. Measured velocity and temperature fields will be compared with numerical results to examine the feasibility of development as a diagnostic technique.

  • In this study, we assess impact of spatial resolution of radar rainfall and a distributed hydrologic model on parameter estimation and rainfall-runoff response. Radar data measured by S-band polarimetric radar located at Mt. Bisl in the year of 2012 are used for the comparative study. As different rainfall estimates such as R-KDP, R-Z, and R-ZDR show good agreement with ground rainfall, R-KDP are applied for rainfall-runoff modeling due to relatively high accuracy in terms of catchment averaged and gauging point rainfall. GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model) is implemented for flood simulations at the Geumho River catchment with spatial resolutions of 200m, 500m, and 1000m. Automatic calibration is performed by PEST (model independent parameter estimation tool) to find suitable parameters for each spatial resolution. For 200m resolution, multipliers of overlandflow and soil hydraulic conductivity are estimated within stable ranges, while high variations are found from results for 500m and 1000m resolution. No tendency is found in the estimated initial soil moisture. When parameters estimated for different spatial resolution are applied for other resolutions, 200m resolution model shows higher sensitivity compared to 1000m resolution model.

  • Worldview-3 satellite sensor provides panchromatic image with high-spatial resolution and 8-band multispectral images. Therefore, an image-sharpening technique, which sharpens the spatial resolution of multispectral images by using high-spatial resolution panchromatic images, is essential for various applications of Worldview-3 images based on image interpretation and processing. The existing pansharpening algorithms tend to tradeoff between spectral distortion and spatial enhancement. In this study, we applied six pansharpening algorithms to Worldview-3 satellite imagery and assessed the quality of pansharpened images qualitatively and quantitatively. We also analyzed the effects of time lag for each multispectral band during the pansharpening process. Quantitative assessment of pansharpened images was performed by comparing ERGAS (Erreur Relative Globale Adimensionnelle de Synthèse), SAM (Spectral Angle Mapper), Q-index and sCC (spatial Correlation Coefficient) based on real data set. In experiment, quantitative results obtained by MRA (Multi-Resolution Analysis)-based algorithm were better than those by the CS (Component Substitution)-based algorithm. Nevertheless, qualitative quality of spectral information was similar to each other. In addition, images obtained by the CS-based algorithm and by division of two multispectral sensors were shaper in terms of spatial quality than those obtained by the other pansharpening algorithm. Therefore, there is a need to determine a pansharpening method for Worldview-3 images for application to remote sensing data, such as spectral and spatial information-based applications.

  • Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in various applications due to advantages of low cost, simplicity in construction, mechanical robustness, and little environmental restriction in usage. But the main purposes of the noncontact sensing are rather narrowly confined within object detection and distance measurement. For the application of object recognition, ultrasonic sensors exhibit several shortcomings of poor directionality which results in low spatial resolution of objects, and specularity which gives frequent erroneous range readings. To resolve these problems in object recognition, an array of the sensor has been used. To improve the spatial resolution, more number of sensors are used in essence throughout the various devices of the sensor arrays. Under the disguise of a fixed number of the sensors, the array can be shifted mechanically in several steps. In this paper we propose a practical sensor resolution enhancement method using an electronic circuit accompanying the sensor array. The circuit changes the transmitter output voltage in several steps. Using the known sensor characteristics, a set of different return echo signals provide enhanced spatial resolution. The improvement is obtained with neither the cost of the increased number of the sensors nor extra mechanical devices.
