In this study, Ichon basin is selected as study area and regional analysis of geological structure are done by using lineament analysis. The factors which affects slope stability, are chosen, and integrated to database using GIS (Geoscientific Information System). Landsat TM band 4, 5 and 7 are choosen and processed by various image enhancement technique to analyse the regional geological lineaments. Spatial distribution of lineament is analysed through lineament density map and study area can be divided the eight structural domains. Considering environmental geological characteristics of study area, rating and weighting of each factors for slope stability analysis are determined and spatial analysis of regional slope stability is examined through overlaying technique of GIS. The result of areal distribution of slope stability shows that the most unstable area is all over Mt. Buksung, Mt. Daepo, Mt. Songrim and Mt. Yankak.

Few researches related to the spatial determination of areas where red tide occurs have been performed, so accurately determining the area where red tide occurs and disappears poses difficulties. Therefore, a more objective and scientific method is necessary to analyze the occurrence and movement of red tide based on a geo-spatial information system. In this study, the coastline was extracted using a digital topographic map in order to examine areas where red tide occurs each year. An analysis of red tide occurrence areas, which were determined based on red tide data for the last several years, showed that only Yeoja bay had almost a zero case of red tide of the areas studied, whereas Dolsando in the South Sea and NamHaedo Aenggang bay areas exhibited the highest frequency of red tide occurrences. Based on these results, by using a system that determines the geo-spatial distribution status of areas repeatedly hit by red tide every year, it would be possible to predict the course of red tide and prevent consequent damages.
To obtain basic information for precision agriculture, spatial variability of rice growth condition was evaluated in 100m ${\times}$100m paddy field. The rice growth condition of four hundred locations in the field were investigated to analyze the spatial variability of their properties ; SPAD, plant length and tiller number. Geostatistical analysis was carried out to examine within-field spatial variability using semivariograms and kriged maps as well as descriptive statistics. Descriptive statistics showed that the coefficient of variation for SPAD, plant length, and tiller number exceeded 5.70 %, suggesting a relatively high variability. Geostatistical analysis indicated a high spatial dependence for all the properties except for the second tiller number. The range of spatial dependence was about 20 m for SPAD, plant length, and tiller number. Based on the results of spatial dependence, kriged maps were prepared for the properties to analyse their spatial distribution in the field. The results reflected the history of field management. In conclusion, the need for site-specific field management and possibility of precision agriculture were demonstrated even in an almost flat paddy field.
Vegetation change reconstructed by pollen analysis is effective to clarify natural conditions such as climate and soil as well as intensity of human activity. Pollen analysis in Korea is difficult to obtain peaty soil sedimented by low relief geomorphollogically and formation age is usually confined to obtain information during young Holocene as well as little absolute age data. Isopollen map was constructed in order to analyze the change of vegetation environment time-spatially during Holocene based on the 30 data with age dated from 78 results from pollen analysis in Korea. The indicatives for vegetation environment were the main trees in Korea such as Alnus, Pinus, Quercus and AP/NAP during the periods of 6,000 y.BP, 4,000 y.BP, 3,000 y.BP, 2,000 y.BP, 1,000 y.BP. As a result, the regional time-spatial patterns of vegetation distribution appeared clearly on the isopollen map. The dominant vegetation stage was repeated in the different pattern e.g. the dominance between Alnus and Quercus at West Coast and between Pinus and Quercus at East Coast competitively.

This paper describes the species composition of the remnant forest vegetation (Natural Monument No. 65) in the Mok-do island of Ulsan city and its relation to ecological long-term monitoring. Syntaxonomical classification and actual vegetation map were depicted in very fine scale 1:800 for better understanding spatial distribution and vitality of individual trees and communities. A total of 111 species and 13 plant communities occurred on the 19,166 ㎡ area. Evergreen broad-leaved forest of Machilus thunbergii is a representative vegetation type, which covers 37.4% of the island area. Evergreen coniferous forest of Pinus thunbergii covers 18.6% of the island. These two forests occurred at different parts of the island, i.e., the former at the rearward and the later at the frontward of island against marine. 95.7% of trees analysed was determined as critically and absolutely monitored individuals. From a conservation perspective the Mok-do vegetation is extremely vulnerable, which must be long-termly monitored using an assessment of tree vitality and a fine scale map of vegetation.
To make vector data from a map which has no negative plates by using vectoring tool, it is necessary that we can extract objects to be vectorized from a scanned map. In this paper, we studied on extracting vectoring objects from scanned color maps. To do this, we classified vectoring objects into three types : line type, filled - area type and character/symbol type. To make the extraction method effective, we analyzed characteristics of vectoring objects and color distribution in scanned color maps. Then, we applied these characteristics to designing process of the extraction method. To extract the line type object, our line tracing method was designed by using the masks which considered connectivity and geometrical characteristics of lines. By using the local thresholding method and the similarity function for comparing the color distribution between two NxN blocks, we extracted character/symbol and the filled-area objects effectively. The method proposed in this paper can be used for constructing the small scale GIS application economically using existing color maps.
In this study, we derived the wind speed at 50 m and 80 m above sea level from 567 stations over a period of 1 year and correlated to measured wind speed at 5 radiosonde sites. From these correlations, we derived and analyzed the spatial distribution of wind map over Korea based on hourly observational data recorded over a period of 5 years from 2004 to 2008. As a results, wind speed is generally high over seashores, mountains, and islands. Mean wind speed over Korea at 50 and 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 seasonally are highest at Spring, and then followed by Winter, Fall, and Summer. In 76 (14%) stations, mean wind speed at 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 are greater than $5ms^{-1}$. The prevailing winds over Korea at 80 m above sea level for 5 years during 2004 to 2008 are North (44%), Northwest (16%), and West (15%). In 99 stations, the % of wind faster than $5ms^{-1}$ was higher than 40%, and in 62 stations, the % of wind faster than $5ms^{-1}$ was higher than 50%. In 178 station, the % of prevailing winds was higher than 30%, and there are 7 stations which also have wind speeds over $5ms^{-1}$, ranking from highest to lowest, Dongsong, Daegwallyeong, Baekun Mt., Hyangrobong Mt., Sorak Mt., Gosan, and Misiryeong Mt..

The objective of this study was to suggest technical approaches for preparation and down scaling of climate data used for predicting the potential forest distribution. To predict the forest distribution, we employed a Korean-specific forest distribution model, so-called the TAG(Thermal Analogy Group), and defined the PFT(Plant Functional Types) based on the HyTAG(Hydrological and Thermal Analogy Group). The climate data with 20km spatial resolution were interpolated to fit on the input data format with 1km spatial resolution. Two potential forest distribution maps were estimated using climate data constructed by kriging, one of the interpolation and down-scaling approaches, with and without lapse rate considered. Through the verification process by comparing two potential maps with the actual vegetation map, the forest distribution using the lapse rate was proven to be 38% more accurate.
Urban forests provide great ecosystem services to population in metropolitan areas even though they occupy little green space in a huge gray landscape. Unfortunately, urbanization inherently results in threatening the green infrastructure, and the recent urbanization trends drew great attention of scientists and policy makers on how to preserve or restore green infrastructure in metropolitan area. For this reason, mapping the spatial distribution of the green infrastructure is important in urban environments since the resulting map helps us identify hot green spots and set up long term plan on how to preserve or restore green infrastructure in urban environments. As a preliminary step for mapping green infrastructure utilizing multi-source remote sensing data in urban environments, the objective of this study is to map vegetation volume by fusing LiDAR and multispectral data in urban environments. Multispectral imageries are used to identify the two dimensional distribution of green infrastructure, while LiDAR data are utilized to characterize the vertical structure of the identified green structure. Vegetation volume was calculated over the metropolitan Chicago city area, and the vegetation volume was summarized over 16 NLCD classes. The experimental results indicated that vegetation volume varies greatly even in the same land cover class, and traditional land cover map based above ground biomass estimation approach may introduce bias in the estimation results.
