Eutrophication is a well-known phenomenon in lentic habitats, however it is receiving increasing attention in shallow streams of Korea due to the increase of periphyton to a nuisance level. In this study temporal and spatial variation in periphyton standing crop and nutrient concentrations were surveyed in the upper reach of the Han River (the Inbuk Stream) that used to be a pristine rural stream until 1980s. Chlorophyll-a concentration per unit surface area of bottom substrate was examined monthly for one year period at nine sites along the Inbuk Stream together with environmental factors such as phosphorus, nitrogen, and water velocity. The standing crop of periphytic algae ranged from $4{\sim}242mgChl.a/m^2$ with a median of $55mgChl.a/m^2$, often exceeding the nuisance level criterion. Along the stream periphyton increased significantly from $39{\pm}48mgChl.a/m^2$ to $94{\pm}49mgChl.a/m^2$ after merging of a tributary in an intensive agricultural basin with high phosphorus concentrations. Seasonally periphyton biomass was highest in autumn (median $171{\pm}76mgChl.a/m^2$) from October through December when water flow velocity was low (median $0.4{\pm}0.3m/s$), while it was higher in flood season (median $1.2{\pm}0.4m/s$) and freezing season (median $0.2{\pm}0.3m/s$) was lower. The result shows that this rural stream often shows characteristics of eutrophication according to periphyton standing crop and it may be regulated by phosphorus and water velocity.

Sedimentological investigations on surface and suspended sediments were performed in Kwangyang Bay of the middle South Sea in order to reveal recent changes in depositional environments concerning anthropogenic influence. A variety of coastal developments caused the texture of the surface sediments to become distinctively finer, particularly in the southwestern part of the bay. Accordingly, the westward lining sedimentary facies was somewhat simplified from triple-mode distribution to the dual-mode one by the construction of POSCO. This east-west distribution to the sedimentary facies has recently graded into the north-south distribution by further construction of other industrial complexes including Kwangyang Port. The prominent textural changes in surface sediments are most likely associated with weakening of tidal currents related to the developments which is anticipated to be .still continued. The distribution and flux estimation of suspended sediments suggest a noticeable import of fine particles into the bay predominantly through a northern entrance rather than the southern entrance. The movements of suspended sediments in the water level near the seabed prevailed over those of the mid and surficial levels.

Temporal and spatial variations of surface water temperature in Jinju Bay for the period of 2010~2011 were studied using the data from temperature monitoring buoys deployed at 17 stations in the south coast of Korea. Water temperature shows the maximum late in January and the minimum early in August. Seasonal variation of water temperatures at the north part of the bay is smaller than the middle and the south. In summer, the lowest and the highest of maximum water temperature are distributed around Jijok Channel which is located at the south of the bay. The fluctuations of water temperatures at Noryang and Daebang Channel are smaller than others because of vertical mixing caused by passage of strong tidal currents. Wind and strong currents affect on the stratification of the surface water layer near Daebang Channel. High temperatures come in frequently around the north area when eastward constant flows appear at neap tide as blowing westerly in the springtime at Noryang Channel. Spectral analyses of temperature records show significant peaks at 7~20 day periods at Noryang Channel, 7~20 day and semidiurnal at the west coast of Changsun Island and Jijok Channel and 7~20 day and diurnal at the middle of the bay. Temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel shows high coherence and has leading phase with those at other stations in the bay. However, the phase of temperature fluctuation at Noryang Channel falls behind that at Daebang Channel. Daebang Channel has an influence on the temperature fluctuation only at the west and middle part of the bay. Cross-correlation analyses for the temperature fluctuation show that Jinju Bay could be classified into six areas; Noryang Channel, the area of convergence and divergence at the north, Daebang Channel, the west coast of Changsun Island, the mixing area at the middle of the bay and the south inside of the bay, respectively.
A simple bispectral threshold technique which reflects the temporal and spatial characteristics of the analysis area has been developed to classify the cloud type and estimate the cloud cover from GMS/S-VISSR(Stretched Visible and Infrared Spin Scan Radiometer) imagery. In this research, we divided the analysis area into land and sea to consider their different optical properties and used the same time observation data to exclude the solar zenith angle effects included in the raw data. Statistical clear sky radiance(CSRs) was constructed using maximum brightness temperature and minimum albedo from the S-VISSR imagery data during consecutive two weeks. The CSR used in the cloud anaysis was updated on the daily basis by using CSRs, the standard deviation of CSRs and present raw data to reflect the daily variation of temperature. Thresholds were applied to classify the cloud type and estimate the cloud cover from GMS/S-VISST imagery. We used a different thresholds according to the earth surface type and the thresholds were enough to resolve the spatial variation of brightness temperature and the noise in raw data. To classify the ambiguous pixels, we used the time series of 2-D histogram and local standard deviation, and the results showed a little improvements. Visual comparisons among the present research results, KMA's manual analysis and observed sea level charts showed a good agreement in quality.

Dynamic deflection is important for evaluating the performance of a long-span cable-stayed bridge, and its continuous measurement is still cumbersome. This study proposes a dynamic deflection monitoring method for cable-stayed bridge based on Bi-directional Long Short-term Memory (BiLSTM) neural network taking advantages of the characteristics of spatial variation of cable acceleration response (CAR) and main girder deflection response (MGDR). Firstly, the relationship between the spatial and temporal variation of the CAR and the MGDR is described based on the geometric deformation of the bridge. Then a data-driven relational model based on BiLSTM neural network is established using CAR and MGDR data, and it is further used to monitor the MGDR via measuring the CAR. Finally, numerical simulations and field test are conducted to verify the proposed method. The root mean squared error (RMSE) of the numerical simulations are less than 4 while the RMSE of the field test is 1.5782, which indicate that it provides a cost-effective and convenient method for real-time deflection monitoring of cable-stayed bridges.
A total of 52 sampling sites were selected in the stream network of the upper Paldang watershed (e.g. Kyonan, Gapyeong, Jojong, Chengmi, Bockha, Yanghwa and Heuk streams). Over the time period of April 2007-February 2008, 1820 samples were collected and analyzed for physico-chemical variables of the upper watershed in order to investigate spatio-temporal water quality variation in particular the relationship with land use. Although temporal variations of water quality in each stream were similar and were significantly influenced by flow, spatial variations in each stream varied as physico-chemical characteristics of upper watershed. As a result of regression analysis, Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD), Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Nitrogen (T-N), and Total phosphorus (T-P) concentration were the most significantly and positively associated with people population density. It is necessary to manage not only water quality but also land use of upper watershed and flow flux.
In this study, urban runoff analyses were performed using high resolution Quantitative Precipitation Estimation (QPE), and variation of rainfall and runoff were analyzed to evaluate QPE data for urban runoff analysis. The five drainage districts (Seocho3, 4, 5, Yeoksam and Nonhyun) around Gangnam station were chosen as study area, the area is $7.4km^2$. Rainfall data from KMA AWS (34 stations), SKP AWS (156 stations) and Gwanduk radar were used for QPEs in Seoul area. Four types of QPE(QPE1: KMA AWS, QPE2: KMA+ SKP AWS, QPE3: Gwangduk radar, QPE4: QPE2+QPE3) of 6 events in July 2013 were generated by using Krigging and conditional merging. The temporal and spatial resolution of QPEs are 10 minutes and 250 m, respectively. The complex pipe network were treated as 773 manholes, 772 sub-drainage districts and 1,059 pipelines for urban runoff analysis as input data. QPE2 and QPE4 show spatial variation of rainfall by sub-drainage districts as 1.9 times bigger than QPE1. The peak runoff of QPE2 and QPE4 also show spatial variation as 6 times bigger than Gangnam and Seocho AWS. Thus, the spatial variation of rainfall and runoff could exist in small area such as this study area, and using high-resolution rainfall data is desirable for accurate urban runoff analysis.

To understand the temporal and spatial variations of surface chlorophyll-a concentration (Chl-a) distribution in the Indian Ocean ($30^{\circ}E{\sim}120^{\circ}E$, $30^{\circ}S{\sim}30^{\circ}N$) by the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), we conducted EOF and K means analyses of monthly satellite-derived Chl-a data in the region during 1998~2016 periods. Chl-a showed low values in the central region of the Indian Ocean and relatively high values in the upwelling region and around the marginal regions of the Indian Ocean. It also had a strong seasonal variation of Chl-a, showing the lowest value in the spring and the highest value in summer due to the change of the monsoon and current system. The EOF analysis showed that Chl-a variation in EOF mode 1 is related to ENSO (El $Ni{\tilde{n}}o$/Southern Oscillation) and that of mode 2 is linked to IOD. Both modes explained spatially opposite trends of Chl-a in the east and west Indian Ocean. From K means analysis, the Chl-a variation in the east and west Indian Ocean, and around India have relatively good relationship with IOD while that in the tropical and middle Indian Ocean closely associated with ENSO. The spatial and temporal distribution of Chl-a also showed distinct spatial and temporal variations depend on the different types of IOD events. IOD classifies two patterns, which occurred during the developing ENSO (First Type IOD) and the year following ENSO event (Second Type IOD). Chl-a variation in the First Type IOD started in summer and peaked in fall around the east and west Indian Ocean. Chl-a variation in the Second Type IOD occurred started in spring, peaked in summer and fall, and disappeared in winter. In the Chl-a variation related to IOD, developing process appearing in the Chl-a difference between the east and west Indian ocean was similar. Chl-a variation in the northern Indian Ocean were opposite trend with changing developing phase of IOD.
In order to derive time dependence of the atmospheric diffuse light, which consists of the airglow continuum emission and diffusely scattered radiations of the intergrated starlight, the diffuse Galactic light, and the zodiacal light, we have analyzed the meridian scan observations of the sky brightness at $5,080\;{\AA}$ and $5,300\;{\AA}$. Amplitude of the time-variation becomes larger for lower elevation, and maximum amplitude is found to be about $50\;S_{10}(V)_{G2V}$ at elevation $10^{\circ}$. The atmospheric diffuse radiation attains maximum brightness at around midnight, and afterward it decreases slowly with time. The time-variations for the two wavelengths are similar to each other. The observed brightness distribution of the diffuse light along the zenith distance is fitted to an empirical relation of two parameters. By making the two parameters time-dependent, we describe the spatial and time variations of the atmospheric diffuse light. This enables us to make time dependent correction for the atmospheric diffuse component in the reduction of zodiacal light brightness.

A drought event is characterized by duration, severity and affected area. In general, after calculating a drought index using hydro-meteorological time series at a station, a drought event is defined based on the run theory to identify the beginning and end time. However, this one-dimensional analysis has limitations for analyzing the spatio-temporal occurrence characteristics and movement paths of drought. Therefore, this study is to define a three-dimensional drought event using a simple clustering algorithm and to develop a drought map that can be used to understand the drought severity according to the spatio-temporal expansion of drought. As a result, compared with the two-dimensional monitoring information to show spatial distribution of drought index, a proposed drought map is able to show three-dimensional drought characteristics inclusing drought duration, spatial cumulative severity, and centroid of drought. The analysis of drought map indicated that there was a drought event which had the affected area less than 10 % while on occations while there were 11 drought events (44 %) which had the affected area more a than 90 % of the total area. This means that it is important to understand the relationship between spatial variation of drought affected area and severity corresponding to various drought durations. The development of drought map based on three-dimensional drought analysis is useful to analyze the spatio-temporal occurrence characteristics and propagation patterns of regional drought which can be utilized in developing mitigation measures for future extreme droughts.
