  • In this study, the retractable-roof spatial structure was chosen as the analytical model and a tuned mass damper (TMD) was installed in the analytical model in order to control the seismic response. The analysis model is mainly consisted of runway trusses (RT) and transverse trusses (TT), and the displacement response was analyzed by installing TMD on those trusses. The mass of the single TMD which is installed in the analytical model was set to 1% of the total structure mass and the total TMD mass ratio was set to be 8% or 6%. In addition, the mass of a single TMD was varied depending on the number of installations. As a result of analyzing the optimal number of installations of TMD, the displacement response was reduced in all cases compared to the case without TMD. Above all, the case with 8 TMDs was the most effective in reducing he displacement response. However, in this case, as the load on the upper structure of the retractable-roof spatial structure increases, the total mass ratio of TMD was maintained and the number of TMDs was increased to reduce the mass ratio of one TMD.

  • This study aims to analyze general features and forms of spatial structure of major space in museums and for the scope of this study, set up major space and the surrounding areas structured around major space and for the target of analysis, selected 10 museums of overseas examples from 19th century to 2006. And this study on focus, on the circulation structure and visual structure will be analyzed in qualitative method by focusing on the floor plan and section structures; deepening process of analysis, visual structure will turn into numerical value to analyze the spatial structure of the major space. The results of this study are as follow. First, vertical elements should be critically considered in a circulation plan for functional performance of dimensional circulation distribution in a major space. Second, a plan by location of vertical and horizontal moving elements related to a major space affects a circulation relation more than a connection type between a major space and an exhibition area. Third, it could be categorized into 4 types by considering the features of spatial structure followed by connecting relationship between areas. Fourth, comparable figures were drawn out among large space and surrounding areas but it couldn't draw out types.

  • To increase the retrieval performance in spatial database systems, it is required to develop spatial indexing methods considered the spatial locality. The spatial locality is related to the location property of objects. The previous spatial indexing methods are not considered the circular location property that objects will be taken. In this paper, we propose a dynamic spatial index structure called $Cr^*$-tree, and evaluate the performance of the proposed index structure. This is a new spatial index structure considered the circular location property of objects in which a search space is constructed with the circular and linear domains. By the simulation results, the $Cr^*$-tree shows that the number of disk across is low and the bucket utilization is high regardless of object distribution and bucket capacity.

  • In order to increase the performance of spatial database systems, a spatial indexing method is necessary to manage spatial objects efficiently in both dynamic and static environments. A spatial indexing method considering a spatial locality is required to increase the retrieval performance. And the spatial locality is related to the location property of objects. The previous spatial indexing methods did not consider the circular location property of objects. In this paper, we introduce the CR-Tree that is a spatial index structure for clustering spatially adjacent objects in which a search space is constructed with the circular and linear domains. Using a spatial index structure considered a circular location property of objects, we show that high hit ratio and bucket utilization are increased through the simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a hybrid index structure, called the SQMR-tree(Spatial Quad MR-tree) that can process spatial data efficiently by combining advantages of the MR-tree and the SQR-tree. The MR-tree is an extended R-tree using a mapping tree to access directly to leaf nodes of the R-tree and the SQR-tree is a combination of the SQ-tree(Spatial Quad-tree) which is an extended Quad-tree to process spatial objects with non-zero area and the R-tree which actually stores spatial objects and are associated with each leaf node of the SQ-tree. The SQMR-tree consists of the SQR-tree as the base structure and the mapping trees associated with each R-tree of the SQR-tree. Therefore, because spatial objects are distributedly inserted into several R-trees and only R-trees intersected with the query area are accessed to process spatial queries like the SQR-tree, the query processing cost of the SQMR-tree can be reduced. Moreover, the search performance of the SQMR-tree is improved by using the mapping trees to access directly to leaf nodes of the R-tree without tree traversal like the MR-tree. Finally, we proved superiority of the SQMR-tree through experiments.

  • This paper presents an analysis of stochastic eigenvalue problem of plane bar structures. Particular attention is paid to the effect of spatial variations of the flexural properties of the structure on the first four eigenvalues. The problem of spatial variations of the structure properties and their effect on the first four eigenvalues is analyzed in detail. The stochastic eigenvalue problem was solved independently by stochastic finite element method (stochastic FEM) and Monte Carlo techniques. It was revealed that the spatial variations of the structural parameters along the structure may substantially affect the eigenvalues with quite wide gap between the two extreme cases of zero- and full-correlation. This is particularly evident for the multi-segment structures for which technology may dictate natural bounds of zero- and full-correlation cases.

  • Purpose: This study aims to examine spatial characteristics of emergency department Chronologically through case studies; and to consider the social implication of these spatial changes. Methods: In this study, a total of eight emergency departments, one for each period, were selected in order to analyze the spatial characteristics. The spatial maps of Space Syntax were employed for analyzing case studies. Results: The spatial configuration of emergency department has been changed from five or more emergency department specialties to four or less specialties such as psychiatric, pediatrics, emergency, and trauma. In the case of care initiation area, the concentrated arrangement mode was switched from the distributed arrangement mode. The spatial maps indicate that it can be seen that the tree structure changes to an annular structure emphasizing the connection between the spaces in the emergency department. This shows that the space efficiency, safe, visual control and flexibility in the planning of the emergency department are important factors affecting the spatial structure of the emergency department. Implications: In the future, it is expected that Korean emergency department will be more focused on efficiency, safe, visual control, and flexibility in the planning as in the case studies of the United States.

  • In the precedent study, the retractable-roof spatial structure was selected as the analytical model and a tuned mass damper (TMD) was installed to control the dynamic response for the earthquake loads. Also, it is analyzed that the installation location of TMD in the analytical model and the optimal number of installations. A single TMD mass installed in the analytical model was set up 1% of the mass of the whole structure, and the optimum installation location was derived according to the number of change. As a result, it was verified that most effective to install eight TMDs regardless of opening or closing. Thus, in this study, eight TMDs were installed in the retractable-roof spatial structure and the optimum mass ratio was inquired while reducing a single TMD. In addition, the optimum mass distribution ratio was identified by redistributing the TMD masses differently depending on the installation position, using the mass ratio of vibration control being the most effective for seismic load. From the analysis results, as it is possible to confirm the optimum mass distribution ratio according to the optimum mass ratio and installation location of the TMD in the the retractable-roof spatial structure, it can be used as a reference in the TMD design for large space structure.

  • Inspired by the success of the High-line project in New York, The Seoul Metropolitan Government launched a project to convert an overpass near Seoul station into a pedestrian park. Seoullo 7017 went through instant success after its opening in May 2017; however, there is a continuous controversy over its long-term impact as shown in the exemplary cases like the High-line project. This study aims for quantitative investigation through the comparative analysis between Seoullo 7017 and the High-Line in the perspectives of spatial configuration. Space Syntax was chosen as the analysis method for this research. Integration (3) in Space Syntax is known to have a high correlation with pedestrian volume; thus, by using this method, spatial structure was analyzed by comparing the statistically verified results of changes in the spatial structure of the Highline with those in Seoul. The results indicated that the influence of Seoullo 7017 was less than that of the High-line in terms of spatial configuration. The reason for this difference is spatial configuration between Manhattan and Seoul. The High-line is located in Manhattan which has an urban grid structure, whereas Seoul has non-geometric urban structure, the neighborhood unit in Korea. Also the center of the overpass isn't connected well with its surroundings.
