We carry out the first survey for globular clusters (GCs) of three galaxies in cosmic voids using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Survey archival F606W and F814W images. While all sample galaxies are classified as early-type galaxies based on ground-based imaging, the high resolution HST images reveal that they are actually spiral galaxies. We identify the point sources with red colors typical for GCs as GC candidates in the color-magnitude diagrams. As a result, we find a significant number of GC candidates. The spatial and radial distribution of GCs show central concentration on each galaxy region. Their mean colors are similar to that of the Milky Way and M31 GCs. The void GCs are somewhat bluer by, and than cluster and field GCs in early-type galaxies with similar luminosity to our samples, but the discrepancy is not significant. We also estimate the specific frequencies of GCs in these galaxies and the values are consistent with those in field and cluster galaxies with similar luminosity. From these results, we suggest that the formation process of void GCs is similar to that of GCs in other environments. The further implications will be discussed.

Today, it is widely accepted that dense environments tend to accelerate galaxy evolution. However, according to recent studies, the environments where galaxies evolve most considerably are galaxy groups rather than galaxy clusters. In an isolated group, the central host galaxy and its satellites co-evolve and interact with each other; as a result, they tend to have similar properties. Such conformity between host and satellite galaxies are relatively well known in galaxy groups, but it is hardly studied what happens after such galaxy groups merge into a galaxy cluster. Recently, J. H. Lee et al. (2014) have found that the colors of bright galaxies in WHL J085910.0+294957, a galaxy cluster at z = 0.3, show a measurable correlation with the mean colors of faint companions around them, which may be the vestige of infallen groups in the cluster. As a follow-up study, we explore more galaxy clusters, Abell 3659 and Abell 1146 at z ~ 0.1, using deep images obtained from the Magellan (Baade) 6.5-m telescope. Cluster members are selected based on the distributions of color, size and concentration along magnitude and spatial distribution. We investigate the dependence of the mean colors of faint companion galaxies on local environments and the properties of adjacent bright galaxies. After comparing the results with those in J. H. Lee et al. (2014), we discuss the origin of the relationships between bright galaxies and their faint companions based on their dependence on cluster properties.

Rehabilitation projects for old water mains typically require considerable capital investments. One of the economical ways of pursuing the rehabilitation projects is to focus on a specific area within the entire region under management. In this paper the hierarchical clustering methods that analyze spatial inter-relationship of location data are applied to about 8,000 water leak location data recorded in a case study area from 1992 to 1997. Among the hierarchical clustering methods Single, Complete, and Average Linkage Methods are used to identify clusters of the water leak locations and to divide the area according to the defined clusters. By comparing the clusters identified by the clustering methods, the best clustering method for the case study area is suggested. Prioritization of the area for maintenance is obtained based on the water leak incident intensity for the clustered area using the suggested best clustering method.

In this study the spatial variability of soils is substantiated physically and numerically by using random field theory. Heterogeneous samples are fabricated by combining nine homogeneous soil clusters that are assumed to be elements of an adopted random field. Homogeneous soils are prepared by mixing different percentages of kaolin and bentonite at water contents equivalent to their respective liquid limits. Comprehensive characteristic laboratory tests were carried out before embarking on direct shear experiments to deduce the basic correlations and properties of nine homogeneous soil clusters that serve to reconstitute the heterogeneous samples. The tests consist of Atterberg limits, and Oedometric and unconfined compression tests. The undrained shear strength of nine soil clusters were measured by the unconfined compression test data, and then correlations were made between the water content and the strength and stiffness of soil samples with different consistency limits. The direct shear strength of heterogeneous samples of different stochastic properties was then evaluated by physical and numerical modelling using FISH code programming in finite difference software of $FLAC^{3D}$. The results of the experimental and stochastic numerical analyses were then compared. The deviation of numerical simulations from direct shear load-displacement profiles taken from different sources were discussed, potential sources of error was introduced and elaborated. This study was primarily to explain the mathematical and physical procedures of sample preparation in stochastic soil mechanics. It can be extended to different problems and applications in geotechnical engineering discipline to take in to account the variability of strength and deformation parameters.
This study applied an exploratory analysis based on Self Organizing Map and GIS to cause specific age-standardized regional death rates data related to ten types of male cancers to find meaning patterns in the data. Then the patterns revealed from the exploratory analysis was evaluated to investigate possible relationship between these patterns and regional socio-economic status represented by regional educational attainment levels of head of household. The results from this analysis show that SI-GUN-GUs in Korea can be clustered to eighteen unique clusters in the stand point of male cancer death rates and these clusters are also spatially clustered. Also, the results reveal that regions with higher socio-economic status show lower level of the death rates compared with the regions with lower socio-economic status. However, for some cancer types, the regions with higher socio-economic status show relatively higher death rates. These patterns imply that the prevention, detection, and treatment of male cancers might be strongly affected by regional factors such as socio-economic status, environmental factors, and cultures and norms in Korea. Especially, one of the eighteen clusters, which includes Gangnam-Gu and Seocho-Gu, shows lower death rates in many of male cancer types. This implies that socio-economic status may be one of the most influential factors for regional cancer control.
In the natural world, most materials such as skin, marble and cloth are translucent. Their appearance is smooth and soft compared with metals or mirrors. In this paper, we propose a new GPU based hierarchical rendering technique for translucent materials, based on the dipole diffusion approximation, at interactive rates. Information of incident light, position, normal, and irradiance, on the surfaces are stored into 2D textures by rendering from a primary light view. Huge numbers of pixel photons are clustered into quad-tree image pyramids. Each pixel, we select clusters (sets of photons), and then we approximate multiple subsurface scattering term with the clusters. We also introduce a novel hierarchical screen-space interpolation technique by exploiting spatial coherence with early-z culling on the GPU. We also build image pyramids of the screen using mipmap and pixel shader. Each pixel of the pyramids is stores position, normal and spatial similarity of children pixels. If a pixel's the similarity is high, we render the pixel and interpolate the pixel to multiple pixels. Result images show that our method can interactively render deformable translucent objects by approximating hundreds of thousand photons with only hundreds clusters without any preprocessing. We use an image-space approach for entire process on the GPU, thus our method is less dependent to scene complexity.
The interest in the prevention of sex crimes and social secure is growing as the number of cases by sexual offences becomes higher. Although various punishable ways have been introduced so far, increasing sex crime is still going on. Thus, effectiveness of legal systems for preventing crimes is questionable. More recently, the approach for environmental criminology has been paid attention for reducing criminal opportunities through environmental design and management of crimes. This study attempts to look over the spatial distribution of sexual crimes in the context of environmental criminology, and examine the correlation between regional environmental factors and the occurrence of sexual crimes empirically. To do this, we visualized the map for sex crimes at the macro-scale and explored the spatial distribution of sexual crimes and spatial clusters based on various spatial statistics using sex crime data published online by the ministry of gender equality and family. Also, we derived the environmental characteristics of sexual crimes by multivariate regression analysis on a large number of explanatory variables of regional environment. Our results will help to understand the current situation and spatial aspects of sex crimes in the nation more realistically. Further, it is respected that our results might be useful basic information for establishing regional policies and plans for the prevention of the sexual crime and enhanced public policing.
Land cover changes are occurring for a variety of reasons such as urbanization, infrastructure construction, desertification, drought, flood, and so on. Many researchers have studied the cause and effect of land cover changes, and also the methods for change detection. However, most of the detection methods are based on the dichotomy of "change" and "not change" according a threshold value. In this paper, we present a change detection method with the integration of probability, spatial autocorrelation, and hotspot detection. We used the AMOEBA (A Multidirectional Ecotope-Based Algorithm) and developed the AMOEBA-CH (core hotspot) because the original algorithm tends to produce too many clusters. Our method considers the probability of land cover changes and the spatial interactions between each pixel and its neighboring pixels using a local spatial autocorrelation measure. The core hotspots of land cover changes can be delineated by a contiguity-dominance model of our AMOEBA-CH method. We tested our algorithm in a simulation for land cover changes using NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data in South Korea between 2000 and 2008.

In the last decade, there has been a widespread interest in knowledge production activities as a new engine of endogeneous growth. In the knowledge-based economy, there has been a growing importance of the patent as the index of knowledge production. Much literature suggests that knowledge production activities tend to be spatially concentrated and formed the clusters in the advanced economies. The purpose of this paper is to analyze spatial-temporal patterns of knowledge production activities in Korea based on a data set of patents from 1981-2000. This paper uses spatial statistical methods and GIS to explore the spatial dimensions of knowledge production activities in Korea. Through this research, it was found that knowledge production activities were unevenly distributed. The knowledge production activity measured by patent counts is highly concentrated in a limited number of cities. The top 10 cities accounted for 68.5% of the total number of patents in the period of 1981-2000, suggesting the existence of a strong concentration of knowledge production activities in Korea. The locations of knowledge production activities by themselves represented a strong spatial autocorrelation. The concentration of knowledge production activities in Korea is spatially correlated to the concentration of adjacent neighboring cities. The location of knowledge production activities is not free from a spatial context and spillover of knowledge production activities are heavily bounded within geographic limits, forming a spatial cluster. There appear some quite a large spatial cluster around the seoul metropolitan area.

Music industry is considered as a creative industry, which tends to locate within a city. However, there is very few paper analysing spatial patterns of music industry in Korea. This study aims to understand music industry's value chain and its location pattern; whether it is clustered or dispersed. In detail, music industry contains five sub-industry: planning, manufacturing, distribution, sales and performance. Locational pattern of each sub-industry is tested by GIS and hot spot analysis. There are several findings from this research. First, value chain of music industry make clusters and have a spatial autocorrelation. Second, the result shows that music industry makes a hotspot area at Gangnam, Guro, Mapo and Jongro-Junggu.
