  • Twenty-three cultures of harmful algal bloom (HAB)-(causing dinoflagellates were isolated from the coastal waters of Korea. For each of the 14 morphospecies, the nuclearencoded small subunit (SSU) rDNA was analyzed to determine the phylogenetic relatedness of the species. Despite temporal and spatial isolation, 3-4 clonal cultures of Alexandrium catenella, Cochlodinium polykrikoides, and Gymnodinium catenatum had 100% identical SSU rDNA sequences. In contrast, heterogeneities in the SSU rDNA sequences were observed in Akashiwo sanguinea and Lingulodinium polyedrum strains. Extreme sequence polymorphism was shown within the SSU rRNA genes of an Al. tamarense clonal culture. A homology search in GenBank revealed that 11 dinoflagellate species were located in clusters corresponding to their morphological classification. The SSU rDNA sequences of C. polykrikoides, Gyrodinium instriatum, and Pheopolykrikos hartmannii, which were determined for the first time in this study, showed the following phylogenetic relationships: C. polykrikoides formed an independent branch separated from other dinoflagellates; Gyr. instriatum was placed in a monophyletic group with Gyr. dorsum and Gyr. uncatenum; and Ph. hartmanii, which forms a distinct two-celled pseudocolony, belonged to Gymnodinium sensu Hansen and Moestrup.

  • The present study describes an investigation on an epidemic of Tuberculosis (TB) which has been occurred among dairy cattle farms in Jeongeup, Jeollabuk-do since 2007. The investigation was performed in three ways as follows: 1. Collecting information about bovine TB outbreaks using investigation reports, an on-the-spot and tracing-back investigations; 2. Analyzing the outbreak pattern; 3. Establishing hypothesis and performing statistical analysis on potential risk factors. In the early 2000s, TB outbreaks were sporadically reported in beef cattle, and only a small number ($1{\sim}2$) of reactors was confirmed in each of outbreak farms. The number of TB outbreaks has been suddenly increased from 2007, mainly in dairy cattle farms. And these outbreaks were temporarily clustered during the period, from March 2007 to April 2009 (relative risk, RR = 13.7, p < 0.001). And two spatial clusters of which radiuses were 0.3 km (RR = 6.9, p < 0.001) and 0.9 km (RR = 3.6, p < 0.01). The analysis to find risk factors was performed on 99 dairy farms (21 outbreaks), which are located in the most seriously affected village during 2007-2009. Middleman (odds ratio, OR = 47.4, p < 0.05) and raw milk collecting system (OR = 6.9, p < 0.05) were recognized as with the highest association. Considering the fact that all the outbreak farms except one had their own manure composting tank, it might be that the manure containing pathogen was leaked from tank and transmitted to other farms by fomites such as middleman or raw milk collecting system.

  • Floodplain is a flat plain between levees and rivers. This paper suggests a methodology for analyzing the land uses in the Nakdong River floodplain using the RapidEye imagery and the given LiDAR(LIght Detection And Ranging) DEM(Digital Elevation Models). First, the levee boundaries are generated using the LiDAR DEM, and the area of the floodplain is extracted from the given RapidEye imagery. The land uses in the floodplain are identified in the extracted RapidEye imagery by the ISODATA(Iterative Self-Organizing Data Analysis Technique Analysis) clustering. The overall accuracy of the identified land uses by the ISODATA clustering is 91%. Analysis of the identified land uses in the floodplain is implemented by counting the number of the pixels constituting the land cover clusters. The results of this research shows that the area of the river occupies 46%, the area of the bare soil occupies 36%, the area of the marsh occupies 11%, and the area of the grass occupies 7% in the identified floodplain.

  • The purpose of this study is to design and construct a data mart that anyone can easily analyze subway OD movement patterns. Subway OD data of the year 2017 was downloaded from the Seoul Open Data Plaza and used as the source data. A multidimensional model was designed, and Gaussian mixed cluster analysis and visualization analysis using Tableau were performed. Interestingly, movement between suburban and Seoul accounts for 23% of the total traffic. The passengers of Suwon Station move to the suburbs much more than Seoul, while Pangyo Station mostly moves to Seoul. As a result of Gaussian mixed cluster, eight clusters of OD segments were found, and the characteristics of each cluster were characterized by segment distance and passenger size.

  • Promoters for milk proteins have been used far producing transgenic animals due to their temporal and spatial expression patterns. ${\beta}$-casein, a calcium-sensitive casein, is a major milk protein that corresponds ca. 30 per cent of total milk protein. Expression of ${\beta}$-casein is controlled by lactogenic hormones such as prolactin (PRL), composite response elements (CoREs) and transcription factors. CoREs are clusters of transcription factor binding sites containing both positive and negative regulatory elements. ${\beta}$-casein gene promoter contains various regions (CoREs) for gene transcription. We analyzed the promoter region by mutagenesis using exonuclease III and linker-scanning. Transcription control elements usually are positioned in 5'-flanking region of the gene. However, in some cases, these elements are located in other regions such as intron 1. The nucleotide sequences of ${\beta}$-casein promote. region has been reported (E12614). However, the properties of the promoter is not yet clear. In this study, we plan to investigate the properties of cis-regulating elements of porcine ${\beta}$-casein by mutation analysis and expression analysis using dual-luciferase repoter assay system.

  • $Ly{\alpha}$ blobs are mysterious, giant (~100 kpc), glowing gas clouds in the distant universe. They occupy the dark matter halos that will evolve into the richest groups and clusters today. The blob's gas may be the proto-intracluster medium and their embedded galaxies are considered as the progenitors of massive cluster galaxies. Yet we do not know why $Ly{\alpha}$ blobs glow. There are evidences of kinematic measurements to exclude shocks and winds from AGN or starbursts as a power source, suggesting that photoionizing radiation or scattering of $Ly{\alpha}$ photons might be responsible. Polarization mapping can discriminate between these photo-ionization and scattering. Previous results of imaging polarimetry for $Ly{\alpha}$ nebulae are roughly consistent with scattering models. However the polarization morphologies in those of previous results are all different, motivating our polarimetric survey of $Ly{\alpha}$ nebulae for the statisticallymeaningful sample. As initial results of our survey, we present the total polarization map of the LABd05 which has the spatial offset between the peak of $Ly{\alpha}$ surface brightness and an obscured AGN. We detect the significant polarization in this target with the radially increasing polarization gradient, suggesting that scattering plays major role within this nebula. The polarization pattern is more aligned with the $Ly{\alpha}$ peak rather than the AGN (the potential energy source), indicating that the $Ly{\alpha}$ photons are originated from the region near the peak of $Ly{\alpha}$ intensity.

  • In this paper, the capacity of the clustered response model for correlated MIMO-OFDM fading channel is investigated. We compare the capacities achieved by correlation at receiver and achieved by correlation at both the transmitter and the receiver for the case where the channel is known and unknown at the transmitter are considered. It is found that the capacity achieved by correlation at receiver is better than the other. It is also shown that the capacity using the water-filling methed is larger than that using the uniform power allocation due to the water-filling gain. But it is negligible when the number of clusters is over the maximum rank of the sum correlation matrix and SNR is high.

  • This paper proposes an improved FCM(Fuzzy C-means) algorithm using intercluster and entropy-based weight in gray image. The fuzzy clustering methods have been extensively used in the image segmentation since it extracts feature information of the region. Most of fuzzy clustering methods have used the FCM algorithm. But, FCM algorithm is still sensitive to noise, as it does not include spatial information. In addition, it can't correctly classify pixels according to the feature-based distributions of clusters. To solve these problems, we applied a weight and intercluster to the traditional FCM algorithm. A weight is obtained from the entropy information based on the cluster's number of neighboring pixels. And a membership for one pixel is given based on the information considering the feature-based intercluster. Experiments has confirmed that the proposed method was more tolerant to noise and superior to existing methods.

  • A histogram-based road border line extractor is proposed for an efficient road extraction from the high-resolution satellite imagery. The road border lines are extracted from an edge strength map based on the directional histogram difference between the road and the non-road region. The straight and the curved roads are extracted hierarchically from the edge strength map of the original image and the segmented road cluster images, and the road network is constructed based on the connectivity. Unlike the conventional approaches based on the spectral similarity, the proposed road extraction method is more robust to noise because it extracts roads based on the histogram, and is able to extract both the location and the width of roads. In addition, the proposed method can extract roads with various spectral characteristics by identifying the road clusters automatically. Experimental results on IKONOS multi-spectral satellite imagery with high spatial resolution show that the proposed method can extract the straight and the curved roads as well as the accurate road border lines.

  • Nearby galaxy clusters and their surrounding regions represent the current endpoint of evolution galaxy cluster evolution. We present a new catalog of 1589 galaxies, what we call Extended Virgo Cluster Catalog (EVCC), in wider area of the Virgo cluster based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Data Release 7. The EVCC covers an area 5.2 times larger than the footprint of the classical Virgo Cluster Catalog, and reaches out to 3.5 times the virial radius of the Virgo cluster. The EVCC contains fundamental information such as membership, morphology, and photometric parameters of galaxies. The EVCC defines a comprehensive galaxy sample covering a wider range in galaxy density that is significantly different from the inner region of the Virgo cluster. It will be the foundation for forthcoming galaxy evolution studies in the extended Virgo cluster region, complementing ongoing and planned Virgo cluster surveys at various wavelengths. We also present the large scale structures in the field around the Virgo cluster. We identified seven galaxy filaments and one possible sheet in three dimensions of super-galactic coordinates based on the HyperLEDA database. By examining spatial distribution and Hubble diagram of galaxies, we found that six filaments are directly associated with the main body of the Virgo cluster. On the other hand, one filament and one sheet are structures located at background of the main body of Virgo cluster. The EVCC and the filament structures will be the foundation for forthcoming studies of galaxy evolution in various environments as well as buildup of the galaxy cluster at z ~ 0, complementing ongoing and planned Virgo cluster surveys at various wavelengths.
