회전 공극형 고전압 펄스발생장치 (A High Voltage Pulse Generator Using a Rotatary Airhole Spark Gap Code)

  • A high voltage pulse generator with a rotator airhole spark gap instead of a rotary ball spark gap has been proposed and investigated. Its feasibility as a high voltage pulse generator is compared with the rotary ball spark gap type one. Parametric studies showed that proposed the rotary airhole type spark gap had a very stable breakdown voltage and reliable pulse repetition time compared with the conventional rotary ball type spark gap. This however showed that the proposed pulse generator with a rotary airhole spark gap instead of a rotary ball spark gap could be potentially used as a very stable and reliable pulse generator in the various fields of applications.

A Pulser System with Parallel Spark Gaps at High Repetition Rate

  • A primary interest of this work is to develop an efficient and powerful repetitive pulser system for the application of ultra wide band generation. The important component of the pulser system is a small-sized coaxial type spark gap with planar electrodes filled with SF6 gas. A repetitive switching action by the coaxial spark gap generates two consecutive pulses in less than a microsecond with rise times of a few hundred picoseconds (ps). A set of several parameters for the repetitive switching of the spark gap is required to be optimized in charging and discharging systems of the pulser. The parameters in the charging system include a circuit scheme, circuit elements, the applied voltage and current ratings from power supplies. The parameters in the discharging system include the spark gap geometry, electrode gap distance, gas type, gas pressure and the load. The characteristics of the spark gap discharge, such as breakdown voltage, output current pulse and recovery rate are too dynamic to control by switching continuously at a high pulse repetition rate (PRR). This leads to a low charging efficiency of the spark gap system. The breakthrough of the low charging efficiency is achieved by a parallel operation of two spark gaps system. The operational behavior of the two spark gaps system is presented in this paper. The work has focused on improvement of the charging efficiency by scaling the PRR of each spark gap in the two spark gaps system.

스파크 점화 시스템의 방전 거동 및 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Behaviour and Characteristics of Spark Discharge in Spark Ignition System)

  • Time-resolved current and voltage measurements for an inductive automotive spark system were made. Also presented are measurements of the total energy delivered to the spark gap. The measurements were made in air for a range of pressures from 1-18atm, at ambient temperatures. The measured voltage and current characteristics were found to be a function of many ignition parameters; some of these include: spark gap distance, internal resistance of the spark plug and high tension wire, and pressure. The voltages presented were measured either at the top of the spark plug or at the spark gap. The measurements were made at different time resolutions to more accurately resolve the voltage and current behavior throughout the discharge process. This was necessary because the breakdown event occurs on a time scale much shorter than the arc and glow phases. The breakdown, are, and glow voltages were found to be functions of spark plug resistance, gas density, and spark plug gap as expected from the literature. Spark duration was found to decrease as either pressure or gap was increased. The transition from the arc to glow phase is usually distinguished by a sudden rise in the voltage across the gap. At pressures above about 7atm this transition was not observed suggesting that a glow phase was not present. Energy delivered to the gap increased with increasing pressure. The effective resistance of the spark gap during discharge was about twice as large for the glow phase as the arc phase.

  • This article describes an estimate method of the spark plug gap by measuring breakdown voltage. Breakdown voltage is the function of spark plug gap, pressure, temperature and humidify. However. It is dominated mainly by the spark plug gap. This technique is applied to in-line process test of the spark plug gap in automobile engine production. Breakdown voltage of normal spark plugs slightly scatters in ordinary conditions and if there is dust or burr in the gap, breakdown voltage gets lower. This technique saves repairing time for bad spark plug and attributes to improve the quality of automobile engine.

다극형 스파크 간격을 사용한 질소레이저의 제작과 그 동작 특성 (Construction and operational characteristics of a nitrogen lawer system employing a multiplex spark gap)

  • 질소레이저의 출력을 높이고 안정성을 향상시키기 위한 방법의 하나로 8쌍으로 구성된 다극형 스파크 간격과 Blumlein 형태의 다중 평행판 축전기형 전송회로로 구성된 레이저 장치를 제작하였고 실험은 스파크 간격을 자체트리거하는 방식과 외부트리거하는 두가지 방식을 택하여 실시하였다. 그 결과 긴 레이저관에 대하여 하나의 스파크 간격이 레이저관 전체를 통하여 레이저를 균일하고 완벽하게 발진시킬수는 없음을 확인하였으며 다극형 스파크 간격을 사용할 경우에도 스파크 간격 모두가 한 몸체처럼 완벽한 역할을 하지 못함을 확인하였다. 그러나 이와 같은 복합적인 결과로 부터 다극형 스파크 간격이 레이저 출력 증가에 기여를 할 수 있음을 확인하였고 그의 설치 범위는 레이저관의 길이(또는 전송회로의 두께)의 3/4이 최적임을 알았다.

  • This paper is introducing a newly developed spark-gap switch with dual trigger system, into which the current from the voltage source is injected along with the test sequence during the synthetic testing of high voltage circuit-breaker. The currently-used spark gap switch is narrow in operating range due to the use of the method of triggering energy being injected by single way. As a result, the frequent happening of misoperation has greatly reduced the test quality and test efficiency and has required the cost of maintenance excessively. In this study, accordingly, in order to basically remove these problems, another triggering system is installed to the opposite direction on the existing triggering system; attaching the same time and the same rising time of pulse wave as on the existing system, so that at a comparatively trigger gap distance from the main electrode(the gap can be operated at 60% of self-break voltage, while at 80% in the current system), the main electrode has been enabled to be closed by the development of spark gap switch with dual trigger system.

A study of nano-scale electrical discharge characteristics for automotive sensor applications

  • To study the relationship between spark ignition and the gap in the nano-scale region, the electric potential was applied to between a Pt-Ir tip and a gold substrate. The tip was sharpened by electro-chemical etching process in the solution of $CaCl_2;H_2O$ and acetone. The radius of tip was measured to be around 200nm and attached to the scanning probe microscope to control the gap between the tip and the substrate. The electric potential of 10V to 80V was applied to initialize the spark. The gaps and the current profile were measured to analyze the characteristics of spark ignition. A spark sustaining time was measured to be between 50ns and 200ns depending on the applied electric potential and the gap between the electrodes. The continuous electric discharge was successfully sustained up to 1 second of spark or arc time. The developed process can be applicable to the micro-scale fabrication of automotive sensors as a similar concept of GTAW.

침단간극의 불꽃 전압특성 (The Spark Voltage Characteristics of Needle Gaps)

  • The effects of sharpness of needle electode on the spark voltage in needle-plane and needle-needle spark gaps at atmospheric pressure was investigated experimentaly in this paper. As the sharpness of needle electrode increases, the spark voltage increases, and the rate of increase is greater in needle-needle electrode than in needle-plane gap. the effects of sharpness is greater in small gap length. These characteristics can be explained by the electric field strength at the needle tip depending on the sharpness of needle, electro-static capacity between the electrodes, and the polarity effect in needle-plane gap. These experimental results will be able to play an important roles on the design of needle-needle gap as high voltage measurement devices and of needle-plane gap as high voltage rectifier equipments.

  • A triggered sparkp gap switch was fabricater and its high-voltage discharge characteristics were studied. The switch is composed of two main electrodes and one trigger electrode which is placed perpendicular to the main one. Spark gap distance was fixed by 25 mm. This device has been operated without self firing at the pulse repetition frequency from 1 to 20 Hz limited by the charging current, and the hold-off voltage from 10 to 30kV. An IGBT switch and igniter coil (originally used in a car) were adopted for a trigger circuit. In this article preliminary switch characteristics of the spark gap switch are reported with the emphasis on the description of the trigger circuit.

  • Triggering characteristics of a trigatron spark gap have been studied by measuring self-emission UV light. By combining the measurement of the UV light with that of the trigger gap voltage and the lain discharge current, we distinguished clearly the differences between the trigatron operations in which the lain discharge occurs after the trigger discharge in the case of sale polarity between the trigger pin and the lain electrode at the opposite side, and the lain gap breakdown takes place before the formation of the trigger spark in the case of different polarity. We show the observation of UV radiation with the other electromagnetic measurements is a simple and reliable scheme to investigate the triggering properties of the trigatron spark gaps.
