Mobile Junk Message Filter Reflecting User Preference

  • In order to block mobile junk messages automatically, many studies on spam filters have applied machine learning algorithms. Most previous research focused only on the accuracy rate of spam filters from the view point of the algorithm used, not on individual user's preferences. In terms of individual taste, the spam filters implemented on a mobile device have the advantage over spam filters on a network node, because it deals with only incoming messages on the users' phone and generates no additional traffic during the filtering process. However, a spam filter on a mobile phone has to consider the consumption of resources, because energy, memory and computing ability are limited. Moreover, as time passes an increasing number of feature words are likely to exhaust mobile resources. In this paper we propose a spam filter model distributed between a users' computer and smart phone. We expect the model to follow personal decision boundaries and use the uniform resources of smart phones. An authorized user's computer takes on the more complex and time consuming jobs, such as feature selection and training, while the smart phone performs only the minimum amount of work for filtering and utilizes the results of the information calculated on the desktop. Our experiments show that the accuracy of our method is more than 95% with Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes and Support Vector Machine, and our model that uses uniform memory does not affect other applications that run on the smart phone.

Improved Spam Filter via Handling of Text Embedded Image E-mail

  • The increase of image spam, a kind of spam in which the text message is embedded into attached image to defeat spam filtering technique, is a major problem of the current e-mail system. For nearly a decade, content based filtering using text classification or machine learning has been a major trend of anti-spam filtering system. Recently, spammers try to defeat anti-spam filter by many techniques. Text embedding into attached image is one of them. We proposed an ontology spam filters. However, the proposed system handles only text e-mail and the percentage of attached images is increasing sharply. The contribution of the paper is that we add image e-mail handling capability into the anti-spam filtering system keeping the advantages of the previous text based spam e-mail filtering system. Also, the proposed system gives a low false negative value, which means that user's valuable e-mail is rarely regarded as a spam e-mail.

A Spam Filter System Based on Maximum Entropy Model Using Co-training with Spamminess Features and URL Features (스팸성 자질과 URL 자질의 공동 학습을 이용한 최대 엔트로피 기반 스팸메일 필터 시스템)

  • This paper presents a spam filter system using co-training with spamminess features and URL features based on the maximum entropy model. Spamminess features are the emphasizing patterns or abnormal patterns in spam messages used by spammers to express their intention and to avoid being filtered by the spam filter system. Since spammers use URLs to give the details and make a change to the URL format not to be filtered by the black list, normal and abnormal URLs can be key features to detect the spam messages. Co-training with spamminess features and URL features uses two different features which are independent each other in training. The filter system can learn information from them independently. Experiment results on TREC spam test collection shows that the proposed approach achieves 9.1% improvement and 6.9% improvement in accuracy compared to the base system and bogo filter system, respectively. The result analysis shows that the proposed spamminess features and URL features are helpful. And an experiment result of the co-training shows that two feature sets are useful since the number of training documents are reduced while the accuracy is closed to the batch learning.

Spam Image Detection Model based on Deep Learning for Improving Spam Filter

  • Due to the development and dissemination of modern technology, anyone can easily communicate using services such as social network service (SNS) through a personal computer (PC) or smartphone. The development of these technologies has caused many beneficial effects. At the same time, bad effects also occurred, one of which was the spam problem. Spam refers to unwanted or rejected information received by unspecified users. The continuous exposure of such information to service users creates inconvenience in the user's use of the service, and if filtering is not performed correctly, the quality of service deteriorates. Recently, spammers are creating more malicious spam by distorting the image of spam text so that optical character recognition (OCR)-based spam filters cannot easily detect it. Fortunately, the level of transformation of image spam circulated on social media is not serious yet. However, in the mail system, spammers (the person who sends spam) showed various modifications to the spam image for neutralizing OCR, and therefore, the same situation can happen with spam images on social media. Spammers have been shown to interfere with OCR reading through geometric transformations such as image distortion, noise addition, and blurring. Various techniques have been studied to filter image spam, but at the same time, methods of interfering with image spam identification using obfuscated images are also continuously developing. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based spam image detection model to improve the existing OCR-based spam image detection performance and compensate for vulnerabilities. The proposed model extracts text features and image features from the image using four sub-models. First, the OCR-based text model extracts the text-related features, whether the image contains spam words, and the word embedding vector from the input image. Then, the convolution neural network-based image model extracts image obfuscation and image feature vectors from the input image. The extracted feature is determined whether it is a spam image by the final spam image classifier. As a result of evaluating the F1-score of the proposed model, the performance was about 14 points higher than the OCR-based spam image detection performance.

A Study of Efficiency Information Filtering System using One-Hot Long Short-Term Memory

  • In this paper, we propose an extended method of one-hot Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and evaluate the performance on spam filtering task. Most of traditional methods proposed for spam filtering task use word occurrences to represent spam or non-spam messages and all syntactic and semantic information are ignored. Major issue appears when both spam and non-spam messages share many common words and noise words. Therefore, it becomes challenging to the system to filter correct labels between spam and non-spam. Unlike previous studies on information filtering task, instead of using only word occurrence and word context as in probabilistic models, we apply a neural network-based approach to train the system filter for a better performance. In addition to one-hot representation, using term weight with attention mechanism allows classifier to focus on potential words which most likely appear in spam and non-spam collection. As a result, we obtained some improvement over the performances of the previous methods. We find out using region embedding and pooling features on the top of LSTM along with attention mechanism allows system to explore a better document representation for filtering task in general.

  • Spam Message has been Causing widespread damages on the Internet. One source of the problems is rooted from an anonymously posted message in the bulletin board in Internet communities. This type of the Spam messages tries to advertise products, to harm other's reputation, to deliver religious messages and so on. In this paper we present the Spam message filtering using the Bayesian approach. In order to increase usefulness of the Spam filter in the bulletin board in Internet communities, we made the Spam filter which can divide the Spam message into six categories such as advertisement, pornography, abuse, religion and other. The test conducted against messages posted on the popular web sites.

  • Most of the currently used spam-filters are based on a Bayesian classification technique, where some serious problems occur such as a limited precision/recall rate and the false positive error. This paper addresses a solution to the problems using a modified Bayesian classifier based on chi-square statistics. The resulting spam-filter is more accurate and flexible than traditional Bayesian spam-filters and can be a personalized one providing some parameters when the filter is teamed from training data.

Studying on Expansion of Realtime Blocking List Conception for Spam E-mail Filtering (스팸 메일 차단을 위한 RBL개념의 확장에 관한 연구)

  • In addition to RBL function, which is used to applying for spam e-mail filtering, as an effective way to deal with the recently widespread spam types, this paper proposes how to extract URL that was comprised in the original e-mail, apply it to RBL, and expand it. The BotNet, which is used to using for sending spam mails these days, has a problem that it is not able to solve with the distributed addresses of sent mails in spam e-mails. In general, as these spam e-mails are sent from the infected Zombi PC of individual user, the sent address itself is not efficient and is meaningless to use in RBL. As an effective way to filter spam e-mail sent by BotNet, this paper analyzes URLs that contained in the original spam e-mail and proposes how to effectively improve filter rate, based on the distribution data of URL site tempting users. This paper proposes the sending mechanism of spam e-mails from BotNet and the methods to realize those types of spam e-mails. In order to gather analyzable spam e-mails, this paper also carries out an experiment by configuring trap system of spam e-mail. By analyzing spam e-mails, which have been received during the certain period of experiment, this paper shows that the expanded RBL method, using URLs that contained in spam e-mails, is effective way to improve the filter distribution of spam e-mail.

Personalized Anti-spam Filter Considering Users' Different Preferences

  • Conventional filters using email header and body information equally judge whether an incoming email is spam or not. However this is unrealistic in everyday life because each person has different criteria to judge what is spam or not. To resolve this problem, we consider user preference information as well as email category information derived from the email content. In this paper, we have developed a personalized anti-spam system using ontologies constructed from rules derived in a data mining process. The reason why traditional content-based filters are not applicable to the proposed experimental situation is described. In also, several experiments constructing classifiers to decide email category and comparing classification rule learners are performed. Especially, an ID3 decision tree algorithm improved the overall accuracy around 17% compared to a conventional SVM text miner on the decision of email category. Some discussions about the axioms generated from the experimental dataset are given too.

Spam Filter by Using X2 Statistics and Support Vector Machines (카이제곱 통계량과 지지벡터기계를 이용한 스팸메일 필터)

  • We propose an automatic spam filter for e-mail data using Support Vector Machines(SVM). We use a lexical form of a word and its part of speech(POS) tags as features and select features by chi square statistics. We represent each feature by TF(text frequency), TF-IDF, and binary weight for experiments. After training SVM with the selected features, SVM classifies each e-mail as spam or not. In experiment, the selected features improve the performance of our system and we acquired overall 98.9% of accuracy with TREC05-p1 spam corpus.
