The purpose of this study was to identify the design concepts embedded in our traditional interior space. The majority of this research was achieved through literature review as well as examining traditional Korean houses. The major findings were summarized as follows : First, traditional Korean interior space is contemplative. This is created possible by the careful placement of indispensable furnitures and accessaries resulting in an abundance of unoccupied space. Therefore, the room assumes a peaceful atmosphere which calms the mind and creates a tranquil setting. To enjoy the placidity of Korean interior space a humble demeanor and contemplative thought are required. Next, traditional Korean interior space is modest. This is created by the moderate proportions that do not challenge human scale. Traditional Korean interior space does not dominate its surroundings but rather conforms with them. This contrasts with traditional western houses which utilizes an overbearing scale sacrificing intimate space. Thirdly, traditional Korean interior space is raw. In other words, the materials used in house retain their self-evident natural state and are not artifically manipulated to hide their inherent properties. The fundamental conceptual belief that interior space should not defy nature but instead become part of it. Lastly, traditional Korean interior space is not decorative Rooms are not congested with frivolous aesthetics. Although this does not immediately attract the people's attention, eventually the interior space establishes a unique line of communication with them.

The purpose of this study is analysing the characteristics of interior space aiming for the exterior space in mixed-used development. The range of this study is limited as passage, department store, shoppingmall and Mixed Use Development. The method of this study is as follows. First, analysing the 7 samples of the interior space aiming for the exterior space in MXD through the framework of public character categorized as 5 factors, accessibility, openness, comfort properties, connectivity, convenience in use. Second, drawing a conclusion from the precedent step. The result of this study is as follows. First, the interior space has become bigger with time. And the public character is expanded with having the same structure of the city space. Second, the interior space solves the problem of the exterior space of city but prefers the same factors with the exterior space. Third, the street in the interior space has the characteristics of openness and comfort properties through diversification. And the open space is planned in various parts of the MXD and has the character of accessibility and connectivity.

As environmentally friendly life styles become more popular these days, the landscape elements like plants, water, stone etc. which used be considered as just simple interior props, now become the main design concept that decides the whole image of space. The purpose of this thesis is to study the various understandings and approaches on the applications of the landscape elements which are known as the most friendly and positive ways to approach the senses of users, among any other methods and techniques for environmentally friendly elements. The application types of landscape elements in interior space design are as follows; (1) incorporate the surrounding landscape elements. Keeping existing landscape elements, incorporate them into interior elements of beauty; (2) install a transition space with landscape elements; (3) green interior planes ;(4) use landscape as the main design concept; (5) use landscape as decoration elements. Many of landscape spaces incorporated into the interior are often built in a hurry and in low qualities without much consideration of the users and the space. This study intends to set a standard for the application of landscape elements in space design, after collecting various cases that applied the landscape elements in interior space, by categorizing the successful and effective applications into applicable patterns.

As patients prefer large scale hospitals recently, the interior design of general hospitals are conspicuously improving. In the past, most patients visit hospitals to get treatment on diseases; however, recently patients visiting hospitals for the early prevention of disease is rapidly increasing. Accordingly, contemporary hospitals should meet the wish of patients who want to get medical service in more clean and comfortable environment. The existing studies on hospital interior design were mostly limited on analyzing the functionality of each space; however, studies on the interior design of common use space, which is open to all hospital users, are required now. Accordingly, this study classified the common use space in contemporary general hospitals into lobby space, corridor space, waiting space and resting space. The interior design characteristics of each space were classified into; connectivity with external environment, level change by void, introduction of natural elements, dynamics of space and variety of color. Then a case analysis was done by selecting 12 common use spaces in overseas general hospitals. According to the analysis result, the interior design characteristics were more conspicuous in the sequence of corridor space, lobby space, resting space and waiting space. The interior design elements such as overall space arrangement and material-finishing were relatively acceptable; however, the aspect of a user's environmental behavior, in other words, the psychological aspect, which can lead a patient to natural healing, was relatively insufficient. It is believed that an in-depth interior design focusing on practical users would enable various spatial behaviors. It is hoped that this study would be a help to the interior design of domestic general hospitals as a guideline.

Louis 1. Kahn was a wise architect who learned from history. He developed his own unique architecture by combining his creative sense with design principles and vocabularies that can be found in historical architecture. When restricting a space, he surrounded the space with thick walls as it had been done in historical buildings. The interior space encompassed by this method became a center-oriented and stable space. The objective of this study is to find the characteristics of Kahn's interior spaces by analyzing his projects in terms of space, form, daylight and materials. For this purpose, five works that are considered to have significance from the aspect of interior design were selected and analyzed. The characteristics realized through this study are as follows. A) Spatial features: 1) Generally speaking, each required space has been arranged symmetrically. 2) Being clearly defined as the main space, the subsidiary space, or the service space, each space also was placed very functionally. 3) The space encompassed by thick walls became a center-oriented, stable space. And in most case, it was characterized as a dark space. B) Formative features: 4) The space was defined as a basic solid such as a cylinder, a hexahedron, and an octagonal box, and was developed into a complex shape by the recessed windows. 5) Historical vocabularies such as an arch, a vault, and a dome were reinterpreted in new ways by kahn's own eyes. 6) Haying diverse shapes, the skylights enrich the space in terms of form. C) Daylight feature: 7) The vertical light entering through the skylights creates a solemn and mysterious atmosphere. 8) Given the shadows from the windows that change according to time, the interior space becomes a very vivid space. D) Material feature: 9) Harmonized with cold and smooth materials such as exposed concrete, metal, and glass, the interior space provides a modern atmosphere. 10) Warm appearing wood was used for furniture and part of walls or floors. The effective use of wood takes on a role that is quite complementary to the cold ambience of the smooth and cold materials. 11) With flexibility In building shapes, the concrete becomes the form-endowing materials.

Superyachts are passenger vessels whose hull exceeds 24m. They are a kind of luxurious leisure ships. Interior designers can contribute in the field of space design of superyachts. This study is intended to investigate the space elements and their organization of superyachts for putting the base of superyachts interior design. Especially it is focused on the interior space division by structural elements such as the watertight bulkheads and decks. In this study we analyze general arrangements, floor plans of decks, of 31 superyachts and extract space elements and their disposition in three dimension. On the basis of the space arrangement we classify the types of space organization of superyachts. And then we inquire the interior space division of superyachts, which is characterized by the structural elements of the ship. The watertight compartments made by the bulkheads and decks have a great effect on interior space design in super yachts. The results of this study are summed up as follows: At first, the small-size superyacht has 3 decks and the midium or large-size superyachts has 4decks. Secondly, depending on the number of decks the superyachts has several typical patterns of space organization. Thirdly, in general there are 5-6 watertight compartments on a deck depending on the superyachts scale. Finally, there are distinct separation between the passenger's movement and the crew's movement on the ship.

This study aims at developing the interior design method of Guest Room Space in resort condominium. There needs new concepts in Guest Room Space in resort condominium where we felt sleeping, eating, in the past. And the behavior in the Guest Room Space in resort condominium become various such as refreshing, making a group, harmony a family and so on. Nowadays, The resort condominium change to complex style and it's space design reflecting user's needs. This study treats with the design item such as unit space plan, furniture, furnishing and equipment of Guest Room Space in resort condominium. As a result of this study, the interior design methods of Guest Room Space in resort condominium must reflect of fitting material, color plan, user's needs and functional divide space. (Living, Dinning, Kitchen, Toilet and Foyer) These result will become basic data future interior design in Guest Room Space in resort condominium.

Nationally large scale of festival is common in these days, the space for a space be party-able such as an event space or an performance space is more necessary. Accordingly applied the balloon art which utilizes a balloon material, to interior and exterior space design can maximize space design for the nonce and renovate space with flexible materials which is the balloon art. This research provides the balloon art is able to be a new research field in interior and exterior design study with three types of way to apply the balloon art to interior and exterior design. First type is an applied interior design with the balloon art, second type is an applied party space design with the balloon art, and third type is practical examples of applied interior design with mixing materials of the balloon and another materials.

Design trend, transparency, which has been developed under a reflection of current periodic environment, has been exposed to people all over the world through varieties of architecture facade and interior space. As interior space follows this trend, which has difference in showing space from the past, transparency becomes an important measure of showing openness of certain space. Main objective of this research is to understand a characteristics of materials that leads transparency a important measure to the modern interior design, and this will set the range to this applicable materials for appropriate areas of defining transparency in an interior. Characteristic uses of transparent materials found in this research which leads transparency into interior space are described below: First, there are two perspectives in transparency. One is visibility and material wised transparency and the other is conditional and spacial wised transparency. With this knowledge, we can expand a level of transparency with ideas such as clarity, opacity, visible transmission, and reflection, and this broadened range will vary the acceptable materials used to show transparency. Second, transparent materials are used with many different purposes in modern interior space as furnitures, sanitary fixtures, partitions, and other structures. With using modern technology in reforming this materials brought new methods in structure composing. last, transparent materials' expnt pable characteristics made modern interior space to have a control over spacial homogeneity, a simplified octlines, weakened boundaries, and compositional effects by interference and vision.

Sir John Sonae(1753-1837) was the most original English architect of 19c. his extremely personal style is superficially neo-classical but, romantic or ' picturesque' in its complicated and unexpected spatial interplay. The Soane's style was one of the curiosities of European architecture. Sir John Soane, like mackintosh, was best known for his interior spaces. He used his own house as a laboratory of spatial experimentation to develop his spatial ideas. The objective of this study was to examine his architectural style through his various architectural works and analyze . The Soane's Museum (his house, No.12.13.14 Lincoln's Inn Fields. London, UK) in order to find inter design elements which represent the best of Soane's interior design effects. As a result , this study found that Soane held no theories as to proportion . It gives the conditon of the building's freedom. He shows the ' primitivism facade and the simple neoclassical symmetry exterior arrangement. As interior design elements he used the layered structure, the natural skylight, the pendentive dome, the space in space, the pictures que style. These elements create magical interior space of the Sonane's Museum. THe spatial intrigue is further enhanced by various degrees of lighting that additionally emphasize the three-dimensional quality of the object loaded walls and piers. One can always look through to space beyond many individual object, both horizontally and vertically. These interior elements can be used for the modern interior design development in order to create the expansion of space and the territoriality of space.
