  • India and China are capable of developing indigenous space launch vehicles, with the rocket technology transferred from the U.S., Western countries, and the Soviet Union, in the 1950s and 1960s. Barring the early 1990s, both countries are absent in the missile nonproliferation regime, and have no major space cooperation records with the U.S., since the establishment of the Missile Technology Control Regime in 1987. With the advent of the $21^{st}$ century, historic progress has been made in the U.S.-India space cooperation, which includes using Indian launch vehicles to launch U.S.non-commercial satellites. However, the U.S. is skeptical with regards to space cooperation and using Chinese space launch vehicle services. In this paper, we present the U.S. nonproliferation policy applied on launch vehicles of India and China, and different aspects of the policy will be examined to draw implications on Korean space activities.

  • The end of the ROK-U.S. missile guidelines opened up the possibility of developing space launch vehicles for various platforms based on air and sea. In particular, the air-based space launch vehicle is an essential space power projection capability compared to the ground-based space launch vehicle in consideration of the geographical location of the Korean Peninsula, such as the deployment of various satellite orbits and the timely launch of satellite. In addition, compared to the ground-based launch vehicle, the cost reduction effect is large, and it has the merit of energy gain because it can be launched with the advantage of the aircraft's altitude and speed. Therefore, in this paper, the necessity of air-based space launch vehicle in the strategic environment of the Korean Peninsula is clearly presented, and through technology trend analysis of various air launch vehicle, the three methods are proposed to have the most efficient air-based space launch vehicle capability in the Korean situation.

  • Water rocket is a pressurized liquid propellant rocket that shares the same basic principles of space launch vehicles. Water rockets can be used as an engineering educational material for the liquid rocket principles and the launch vehicle systems, far beyond the scope of K-12 level science education. In this paper, the principles and theories of water rocket propulsion and flight dynamics was investigated at the level of undergraduate rocket engineering classes. Also, the system level design and operation of water rocket is summarized by including the components of launch vehicle, launch pad, payload and recovery as well as altitude measurement methods.

  • In executing the large scale national project, such as development of space launch vehicle, it is most important to guarantee the technological reliability. However the reliability analysis of launch vehicle is different from other mass product goods because of the limitation of budget and number of tests. In this study, the reliability analysis technique of the propulsion system, which is one of the major sub-systems of launch vehicle is illustrated and applied to the liquid rocket engine of KSR-III.

  • Flight safety analysis, which includes risk estimation for the various abnormal flight modes in addition to normal flight, has to be performed necessarily to guarantee launch safety for the operation of space launch vehicles. For this purpose, a dedicated system has been developed such that all the necessary repetitive computations, result reports, and graphical presentations can be performed inside a single system for user convenience. In addition, the developed system is capable of representing computed results on a three dimensional Earth for the realistic presentation. The developed Flight Safety Analysis System will be employed for the launch operation of Korea Satellite Launch Vehicle-I.

  • In this study, we proposed a water rocket CULV-1 (Chosun University Launch Vehicle-1). Unlike a conventional water rocket, CULV-1 can perform the booster rocket, fairing, and payload separation like an actual launch vehicle and also the imaging data acquisition. The conceptual and critical design of the proposed CULV-1 have been performed considering the operation characteristics. The verification tests have been performed from subsystem to system level in accordance with the established test specifications and verification procedures. Through the final launch test of the flight model, we have verified the design effectiveness of the proposed separation mechanisms for water rocket applications and the mission requirements of the CULV-1 also have been complied.

  • This paper describes the operation results of the GPS receiver system for KSLV (Korea Space Launch Vehicle)-I on the launch site at Naro Space Center that is the first spaceport of South Korea located at Goheung. All equipments of KSLV-I including the GPS receiver system should be monitored and controlled through hard-wired interface during KSLV-I is on standby at the launch pad. The GPS receiver for KSLV-I is connected to triple almost omni-directional patch antennas mounted on the cylindrical surface of KSLV-I that should be erected vertically on the launch pad until lift-off. Signal interference and multipath effects observed in the GPS receiver on the launch site are analyzed in this paper based on the GPS signals received from each GPS antenna.

  • A web-based program life-cycle management(PLM) system is introduced to implement the system engineering processes and to provide the development teaceability online. This information system aims for the realization of essential system engineering management techniques currently applied to the space launch system development program including management of configuration and data based on the work breakdown structure(WBS), WBS, bill of materials and properties. The system enhances communication and gives access to the development data with relevant information such as data-to-data relation and approval status/history through the web, and preserve all of the development data throughout the program life-cycle. Further improvement of the system is planned to implement the program managrment pricesses and to provide integrated information useful for the programmatic decision making.
