  • In this study, a 2D hydrodynamic model equipped with critical dry depth scheme was developed to reproduce the flow over staircase. The channel geometry of hydraulic experiment conducted by Ishigaki et al. was generated in the computational space, and the developed model was validated against flow properties such as discharge, velocity and momentum. In addition, the water surface profile and the velocity distribution evolved in flow over two layers staircases were analyzed. When the initial water depth at the upper floor was 0.3 m, the maximum velocity at lower floor was 4.2 m/s, and the maximum momentum was $1.2m^3/s^2$, and its conversion to force per unit width was 1.2 kN/m. This value was equivalent to the hydrostatic force with 50 cm water depth, and evacuation became difficult, as proposed by Ishigaki et al. For the flow over staircases connecting two layers, the maximum run-up height in flat part connecting two layers was approximately two times higher than the initial water depth in upper floor, and the rapid shock wave with sharp front and long tail was propagated.

  • Landing site searching algorithms are developed for a quadrotor using a depth map in unknown environment. Guidance and control system of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) consists of a trajectory planner, a position and an attitude controller. Landing site is selected based on the information of the depth map which is acquired by a stereo vision sensor attached on the gimbal system pointing downwards. Flatness information is obtained by the maximum depth difference of a predefined depth map region, and the distance from the UAV is also considered. This study proposes three landing methods and compares their performance using various indices such as UAV travel distance, map accuracy, obstacle response time etc.

  • The structure of the magnetic funnel element in the intermediate polar is considered in terms of an important site for the X-ray absorption and the reemission of the X-ray as the optical light. In this paper the column density and the optical depth vary with the filling factor, which is introduced to characterize the structure of matter in the magnetic funnel element. The results of the energy dependence of the X-ray spectrum and the modulation depth of the X-ray light curve are discussed.

  • In this experiments, smoke filling behaviors in a large space were investigated. Also, it found that the smoke filling time can be predicted with a simplified zone model. Thermocouples were used to measure the temperature of the hot gases layer and also later to determine the smoke layer depth. Height markers were also hung from the roof so that observers could visibly assess the smoke layer depth.

  • Previous stereo methods doesn't deal effectively with depth discontinuity due to inevitable window-based problems, and so give inaccurate and noisy matching results in areas with steep disparity variations. In this paper. a variable window approach is presented to estimate accurate, detailed and smooth disparities with three-dimensional disparity space. It makes the smoothing of depth discontinuity reduced by evaluating corresponding correlation values and intensity gradient-based similarity in the space. In addition, it devises the novel arbitrarily-shaped variable window to treat with disparity variations of various structure shapes. We show how our results improve on those of closely related techniques for accuracy, robustness. matching density and computing speed.

  • The Commercial space are changed gradually large scalized and complexed to introduce different culture exchanges and experience. However, the mass-complex commercial space are limited as of their complexed space composition or degree of space depth, which may become factors causing people to get tired easily. Thus, having a design strategy is important to create economical effectiveness in order to overcome these limitations and for the people to stay longer and do their consumption activities through more experiences and social interchanges. Recently, Jerde Partnership's who designed many complex commercial spaces made a commercial success by their unique design strategy to setup a new space and lead the interaction between space and people. The purpose of this study is based on Jerd's design concept to analyze Jerd Partnership's design strategy and space related structure to propose their space construction and design method for mass-complex commercial spaces. The results are as follows. (1)Jerde Partnership's causes the abundant space experience of the user through mass and space constitution to have a theme and a story. (2)They builds an excursion type line of flow system with an organic curve, and a non-daily experience by the change of the space scale and the application of various programs is enabled and guides the stay for the long time. (3)They builds the doorway of various courses and a circulation system through the open space and controls depth of the space. In addition, various events are performed in the center of such a circulation system, and this event makes a unique place.

  • The purpose of this study is to comprehend the utilization, the establishment and the claim of multipurpose space which was corresponded to the 7th National Curriculum, and to examine the use of multipurpose space. The subjects of this study are new or second amenable elementary schools. The conclusion of this study is as follow. 1) Teachers partly agree to the induction and the direction of the 7th National Curriculum, but they think that it is too early to carry it out and most of them think that it is better than old curriculum. 2) According to a report of contentment of multipurpose space, most of teachers are satisfied by multi- purpose space. The main factor responded by 59.8% of total respondents is to study variously. It means teachers highly evaluate the need of various system of studying. 3) The depth of a multipurpose space including the depth of a hallway is suitable 7.2m as 31.3% of respondents and 6.0m as 30.4%. 4) The main factor of dissatisfaction is noisy and ventilation because of the protection between the multipurpose spaces.

  • One of the most important design concerns for undersea tunnels is to establish design water load and flow rate. These are greatly dependent on the hydraulic factors such as water head, cover depth, hydraulic boundary conditions. In this paper, the influence of the hydraulic design factors on the ground loading and the inflow rate was investigated using the coupled finite element method. A horse shoe-shaped tunnel constructed 30 m below sea bottom was adopted to evaluate the water head effect considering various water depth for varying hydraulic conditions and relative permeability between lining and ground. The effect of cover depth was analysed for varying cover depth with the water depth of 60 m. The results were considered in terms of pore water pressure, ground loading and flow rate. Ground loading increases with an increase in water head and cover depth without depending on hydraulic boundary conditions. This points out that in leaking tunnels an increase in water depth increases seepage force which consequently increases ground loading. Furthermore, it is identified that an increase in water head and cover depth increases the rate of inflow and a decrease in the permeability ratio reduces the rate of inflow considerably.

  • A phase-retardation function which was derived from Wigner distribution function (WDF) is used to increase a focal depth of a radially symmetric optical system. The WDF for one-dimensional signal is represented as a two-dimensional function of phasespace ($\chi,\zeta$), and a normalized irradiance is described as a form of the Strehl ratio (SR). The increase in the focal depth is accomplished by delivering a shearing tilt a that represents a characteristic of free space propagation with simple manipulation in the WDF space. In this paper we propose a method for evaluating the focal depth quantitatively by representing the phaseretardation function in terms of the focal depth term. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, we compared the numerically analyzed result with that of J. Sochki's study. study.

  • Background : Epidural anesthesia is now accepted as a popular technique for pain relief and anesthesia. However, accidental dural puncture may occur during placement of the epidural needle. This study was undertaken to evaluate difference of the epidural depth between parturients and non-parturients. Method : Eighty non-parturients receiving epidural anesthesia were assigned to group I, and eighty parturients whose body weight had not yet increased over 15 kg from pregnancy were assigned to group II. With patients in lateral decubitus position, 18 guage Tuohy needle was punctured by approaching at $L_{3-4}$ interspace. Epidural space was identified using loss-of-resistance to air technique. Result : Epidural depth was 4.18 cm and 4.25 cm in group I and group II respectively. There was no significant statistical difference in body mass index(BMI) and ponderal index(PI) (p<0.05), nor in epidural depth between the two groups. Conclusion : Epidural needle need not be placed deeper in parturients than in nonparturients.
