  • The aquatic animals of Tan stream were composed of 46 species, 28 families, 11 orders, 6 classes in 4 phyla during the survey period of April, 1996 to December, 1996. They were composed of 31 species in aquatic insecta, 6 species in annelida, 3 species in mollusca, 1 species in crustacea, and 5 species in fishes, respectively. Major dominant species in Tan stream were Chironomidae sp.1, Chironomidae sp.2, Chironomidae sp.3, Tubufucidae sp.1, Physa acuta and hirudo niponica. Dominance indices of benthic macroinvertebrates ranged highly from 95.74 to 100.00% at lower stream(site 4), but ranged 50.00 to 95.85% at site 1 through site 3. The aquatic animals ranged from 25 to 32 species at site 1 through site 3, but they were only 3 species at site 4 for survey period. Tan stream in the light of urban stream ecosystem has a little less riffle areas and hydrophyte areas by cementation of riparian area and channel type of water course. Therefore, the species of aquatic animals in Tan stream decreased because of deterioration of water quality according to reduction of self-purifcation ability and loss of microhabitat according to reduction of hydrophyte areas and riparian areas. The tendency of decreasing species of aquatic animals appeared seriously at lower stream From drive licence test authority at Kangnam-ku, Seoul to conjunction point of the Han river.

  • In 2005, an unrecorded bryozoan, Bantariella sp., invading on black corals was observed at Munseom in Jejudo Island. An intensive study was performed in the portion of 180 m width and $10{\sim}30m$ deep of Hangae-chang at Munseom during the period from Jan. to Nov. 2006. The following two black corals, Antipathes japonica and A. lata are occurring in this area. To investigate the quantitative change of invasion rates, 26 colonies with initial invasion rate of 0%, 30%, 70% and 100% respectively were individually tagged at the beginning of this study. After that, the change of reinvasion rates was monitored in a timely manner with the pictures taken by underwater camera and ensile observation. These data were analyzed as to host species, depth and initial invasion rates. According to host species, the removal effect was higher in A. lata than A. japonica. The reinvasion rate of black corals showed a maximal effect at $20{\sim}30m$ deep, and the most successful removal effect appeared in the colonies of initial invasion rates of $30{\sim}70%$. Especially, the invasion of Bantariella sp. on black corals is related to seawater temperature in seasonal manner and this appearance was limitedly observed at Munseom. This study is to document the impact by bryozoan proposing removal methods and its proper time of removal. It could contribute to the conservation of black corals and furthermore help to predict the change of marine environments.

  • Arterial oxygen saturation ($SpO_2$) monitoring for newborns requires special attention in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Newborns have very low photo-plethysmogram (PPG) amplitudes and their body movements are difficult to contain. Hardware design and its associated signal processing algorithms should be robust enough so that faulty measurements can be avoided. In this study, improved designs were implemented to deal with low perfusion, motion artifact, and the influence of ambient light. Dynamic range was increased by using different LED intensities and a feedback system. To minimize the effects of motion artifact and to discard other unqualified data, four additional algorithms were used, which were based on dual-trace detection, continuity of DC level, morphology of PPG, and simultaneity check of $SpO_2$. Our $SpO_2$ system was tested with newborns with normal respiration in the NICU. Our system provided fast, real-time responses and 100% artifact detection was accomplished under 84% of $SpO_2$.

  • A bacterial strain No. HB-5, which was capable of producing a pretense in the culture conditions, was isolated from the soil . The pretense was purified from cultural filtrate of Bacillus sp. HB-5 by membrane ultrafiltration and DEAE- cellulose chromatography, gel filtration on Sephadex G-100. The molecular weight was estimated to be 60k4a. The optimal pH and temperature for the activity of the purified pretense pH were 11 and 5$0^{\circ}C$ , respectively. The enzyme was stable within a pH range 8-12 and up to 6$0^{\circ}C$ . The enzyme activity was highly inhibited by PMSF at 1mM. The proteolytic actions of pretense and papain on human epidermis keratins which are major protein impurities on the skin, were compared. The bacterial pretense degraded more effectively than papain. Product containing 2% protease exhibited 21% increase on the skin coloration index. These results suggest that cosmetic product containing pretense produced by Bacillus sp. HB-5 could remove the adherent keratin layer and then make a softer skin.

  • This study investigated how ozone treatment can successfully inactivate pathogenic bacteria in both artificial seawater and effluents discharged from the fishery quarantine station in Pyeongtaek Port, Korea. Vibrio sp. and Streptococcus sp. were initially inoculated into the artificial seawater. All microbes were almost completely inactivated within 10 min and 30 min by injecting 6.4 mg/min and 2.0 mg/min of ozone, respectively. It was discovered that the water storing Pleuronichthys, Pelteobagrus, and Cyprinus imported from China contained the indicator bacteria, Vibrio sp., Enterococcus sp., total coliforms, and heterotrophic microorganisms. Compared to the control, three indicator bacteria were detected at two to six times higher concentrations. The water samples displayed a diverse microbial community, comprising the following four phyla: Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria. Almost all indicator bacteria were inactivated in 5 min at 2.0 mg/min of ozonation; comparatively, 92.9%-98.2% of the less heterotrophic microorganisms were deactivated within the same time period. By increasing the dosage to 6.4 mg/min, 100% deactivation was achieved after 10 min. Despite the almost complete inactivation of most indicator bacteria at high doses after 10 min, several bacterial strains belonging to the Proteobacteria have still been found to be resistant under the given operational conditions.

  • Acid mine drainage (AMD) resulting from pyrite oxidation in mining areas, subsequently leads to soil acidification accompanied by lowering pH and high concentration of metals and metalloids in its surrounding environment. Regarding to this, the microbial amelioration has been considered as a promising option for a more cost-effective and eco-friendlier countermeasure, compared to the use of alkaline chemicals. This study was aimed to evaluate influencing factors in microbially-mediated amelioration of acidic soil spiked by simulated AMD. For this, microcosm experiments were conducted by acid-neutralizing bacterial consortium (dominated by Klebsiella sp. and Raoultella sp.) under the various conditions of AMD spikes (0-2,500 mg SO42-/L), together with acidic mine soil (0-100 g) or sphagnum peat (0-5 g) in the 200 mL of nutrient medium. The employed bacterial consortium, capable of resisting to high level of sulfate concentration (up to 1,500 mg SO42-/L) in low pH, generated the ammonium while concomitantly reduced the sulfate, subsequently contributing to the effective soil stabilization with an evolution of soil pH up to neutral. Furthermore, it demonstrates that suitable condition has to be tuned for successful microbial metabolism to facilitate with neutralization during practical application.

  • Purpose : We evaluated allele frequencies and distribution of surfactant protein A1(SP-A1) in Korean neonates in order to estimate prevalence of RDS to find out new SP-A alleles, and to establish new steroid therapy. Methods : Genomic DNA was extracted from 100 neonates and served as a template in PCR for genotype analysis. SP-A gene-specific amplications and gene-specific allele determinations were performed using PCR-RFLP methods. Results : The distribution for the alleles of the SP-A1 gene in the study population were 6A, $6A^2$, $6A^3$, $6A^4$, $6A^8$, $6A^9$, $6A^{10}$, $6A^{11}$, $6A^{12}$, $6A^{13}$, $6A^{14}$, $6A^{15}$, $6A^{16}$, $6A^{17}$, $6A^{18}$, $6A^{20}$. The specific frequencies for the alleles of the SP-A1 gene in the study population were : $6A^2=21%$, $6A^3=45%$, $6A^4=11%$, $6A^8=9%$, $6A^{14}=8%$. Conclusion : The frequency of $6A^3$ was higher than the other SP-A1 alleles in Korean neonates. This finding suggests that the prevalence of RDS in Korea may be low compared with other countries. However, this finding also suggests that Korean neonates have a high risk of infection.

  • PDiabetic neuropathy is one of the most common diabetes related complications including diabetic nephropathy and retinopahty. In clinical practices, nerve conduction velocity (NCV) has been used as a standard method for diagnosing diabetic neuropathy. However, it applies maximum current of 100mA to nerves causing stress and pain to patients. In this study, as a non-invasive method, $TcpO_2$ was utilized to investigate the difference and relationship between $TcpO_2$ and $SpO_2$ of normal and diabetic neuropathy subjects. In addition, a new method of diagnosing diabetic neuropathy using $TcpO_2$ is suggested. 50 normal subjects and 50 diabetic patients with neuropathy diagnosed by NCV participated in this study. Parameters used in this study were $TcpO_2$, $TcpCO_2$, and $SpO_2$. As a result of the $TcpO_2$ measurements, statistical significances were found from $TcpO_2$ of hands and feet from normal and patients group(p<0.01). $SpO_2$ measured from index finger of normal and patient groups showed no statistical significance(p>0.05). On the other hand, $SpO_2$ measured from great toes of normal and patient groups showed statistical significance(p<0.01). Correlation coefficient between $SpO_2$ of finger and $TcpO_2$ of hand was 0.400 (p<0.01) and $SpO_2$ of toe and $TcpO_2$ of foot was 0.471(p<0.01). Both correlation values were statistically significant. Sensitivities and specificities of the $TcpO_2$ method were found to be 66 % and 92 %, respectively. If the suggested $TcpO_2$ method is used periodically, prevention and early diagnosis of diabetic neuropathy would be possible.

  • Eighty methanol extracts prepared from Vietnamese plants were tested for their cytotoxic activity against A549 cells, a human lung carcinoma cell line. Nine extracts showed survival rates of tumor cells of less than 30% at $100\:{\mu}g/mL$ of the methanol extracts. Among them, three were less than 15%; Meliosma pinnata (VK03, 4%), Goniothalamus vietnamensis (VK05, 06, 0%), Garcinia sp. (VK50, 51, 0%) and Aglaia aphanamixis (VK63, 11%). Both leaf and root extracts of Goniothalamus vietnamensis and the leaf extract of a Garcinia species completely inhibited the growth of A549 cells at the concentration of $100\:{\mu}g/mL$ methanol extract.
