Purpose: Mandibular advancement devices (MAD) are used effectively and widely for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and rapid-eye-movement (REM) dependency of the patients can affect the treatment outcome of OSA. The aim of this study was to compare treatment outcomes of MAD between REM-related and not-REM-related OSA patients. Methods: Fifty-six consecutive patients with OSA who received MAD therapy were evaluated using full night polysomnography before and after insertion of the MADs. The patients were divided into REM-related (REM apnea-hypopnea index [AHI] at least two times higher than their non-REM AHI) and not-REM-related (REM AHI less than two times higher than their non-REM AHI) OSA groups. Results: MAD is used for the treatment of OSA effectively. In respect of AHI, MAD therapy were effective both in REM-related OSA and not-REM-related OSA, but MAD therapy was more effective in not-REM-related OSA than REM-related OSA in overall sleep and non-REM sleep. $SpO_2$ saturations were improved after MAD therapy, but were not different between two groups. Epworth sleepiness scale scores were not improved after MAD therapy. Percentage of REM sleep was increased after MAD therapy but was not different between two groups. Conclusions: MAD therapy was more effective in not-REM-related OSA than REM-related OSA and REM dependency can be a predictive factor of treatment outcome of oral appliance for OSA patients.

The purpose of this study was to quickly and effectively identify the Nosema disease of bumblebees in Gangwon Province in Korea. Bumblebees are crucial pollinators of various crops, and microsporidia are the critical pathogens of these hosts. When bumblebees are infected with Nosema bombi, their abdomens can become distended. Paralyzed and infected workers often become sluggish and die early. We have identified the morphology of the microsporidium by light and electron microscopy, and found it to have fairly small oval spores, as has been described previously in many other articles. For the specific and sensitive diagnosis of the microsporidian parasite N. bombi in bumblebees, we have developed an improved method of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for expeditious diagnosis. Two pairs of primers were tested on N. bombi and the related microsporidia Nosema apis and Nosema sp., both of which infect Bombus ignitus and Bombus hypocrita sapporoensis. Furthermore, we have verified and analyzed the 16SrRNA sequence data of N. bombi in bumblebees by using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST) server at the National Center for Biotechnology Information.
Soil microbes are widely well known to play an important role for sustainable agriculture in terms of crop healthy cultivation and environmental conservation. In this context, the distributional characteristics of soil microbes according to cropping systems were investigated under rice (R)-rice (R), rice (R)-barley (B)-rice (R), and soybean (S)-barley (B)-soybean (S) cropping condition to get basic informations for sustainable agriculture, where barley was grown for winter, in mid-mountainous loam paddy located at the altitude of 285 m above sea level in Sangju area from 2014 to 2015. Estimating from microbial communities by fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) method, a total biomass of bacteria, actinomycetes, and fungi in R-B-R plot was 37% and 40% higher than that in S-B-S and R-R plots, respectively (p < 0.05). In especial, bacteria and fungi were more in R-B-R plot than those in any other ones. B. japonicum, AMF, and mesophilic Bacillus sp. were also greater in S-B-S plot than those. In the community distribution, however, bacteria and actinomycetes showed comparatively high values in S-B-S plot relative to either R-R or R-B-R plot including rice, in which fungi outstanding. In the correlation between microbial biomass and soil properties changed by the cropping, bacteria was positively correlated with C:N ratio; actinomycetes with exchangeable Ca; fungi with available $P_2O_5$ (p < 0.05). While these microbes showed negative response to water stable aggregates of soil.

This paper presents the new template based human face recognition methods to improve the recognition performance against scale and in-plane rotation variations of face images. To enhance the recognition performance, the templates are generated by linear or nonlinear operation on multiple images including different scales and rotations of faces. As the invariant features to allow for scale and rotation variations of face images, we adopt the affine transformation, the log-polar mapping, and the log-polar image based FFT. The proposed recognition methods are evaluated in terms of the recognition rate and the processing time. Experimental results show that the proposed template based methods lead to higher recognition rate than the single image based one. The affine transformation based face recognition method shows marginally higher recognition rate than those of the log-polar mapping based method and the log-polar image based FFT, while, in the aspect of processing time, the log-polar mapping based method is the fastest one.
Fundamental study was carried out to elucidate the mechanisms of biological degradation of dyestuff in environments. A few bacterial strains which were capable of degrading amarnath were obtained from soil through an extensive screening program and identified by microbiolological properties. Conditions for bacterial growth and amaranth degradation were characterized and optimized, and the degradation products were identified. The results were as follows. 1. The most active strain A12-1 to be capable of degradation of amaranth was identified as Pseudomonas sp. 2. Optimal conditions for growth of the strain A12-1 were:$35^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5, and growth was markedly increaesd by aeration. 3. Degradation of amaranth by the strain was accessed under similiar conditions for growth, however significantly inhibited when the culture was aerated. 4. Both bacterial growth and amaranth degradation were gradually decreased with increased concentration of amaranth in the culture. 5. Reaction of the crude enzyme from the strain A12-1 was optimal at $35^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5 for degrading amaranth. 6. Sodium naphthionate and R-amino salt were found to be the products of amaranth degradation by the strain A12-1.
Melon powdery mildew, caused by Podosphaera fusca, is one of the serious diseases of melon plant in Korea. In this study, we evaluated the effect of selected antagonistic bacteria on the inhibition of mycelial growth of various plant pathogens, and control of melon powdery mildew. Based on the 16S rDNA and gyrA gene sequences, the selected antagonistic bacteria, M09, M70, and M99-1, were identified as Bacillus velezensis. These bacteria not only inhibited the mycelial growth of 47~69% in various plant pathogens, but also significantly reduced the incidence of powdery mildew. The three strains selected in this study could be used as potential biological control agents for various plant diseases as well as melon powdery mildew.
The present study was undertaken to determine the inhibitory effects of orally administered ginseng saponins(SP), protopanaxadiol saponins (PD), and protopanaxatriol saponins(PT) on the development of morphine-induced tolerance and physical dependence in mice. The study also sought to determine the hepatic glutathione contents. which are closely related to the degree of detoxification of mine the effects of GS on morphine 6-dehydrogenase, which catalyzes the production of morphinone from morphine, and the roles of spinal descendign inhibitory systems in the production of antagonism. The results of the present study showed that GS, PD and PT administered orally inhibited the development of morphine induced tolerance and dependence. GS. PD and PT inhibited the reduction of hepatic glutathione concentration in mice treated chronically with morphine and the activity of morphine 6-dehydrogenase, and the activation of spinal descending inhibitory systems was inhibited by GS. So we hypothesized that the results were partially due to the dual action of the test drugs, the inhibition of morphinone production and the activated formation of morphinone-glutathinone conjugation, and the inhibition of the activatin of apinal descending inhibitory systems and the others.

Background: UV-B-exposed keratinocytes secrete various paracrine factors. Among these factors, basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) stimulates the proliferation of melanocytes. Ginsenosides, the major active compounds of ginseng, are known to have broad pharmacological effects. In this study, we examined the antiproliferative effects of ginsenosides on bFGF-induced melanocyte proliferation. Methods: We investigated the inhibitory effects of Korean Red Ginseng and ginsenosides from Panax ginseng on bFGF-induced proliferation of melan-a melanocytes. Results: When melan-a melanocytes were treated with UV-B-irradiated SP-1 keratinocytes media, cell proliferation increased. This increased proliferation of melanocytes decreased with a neutralizing anti-bFGF antibody. To elucidate the effects of ginsenosides on melanocyte proliferation induced by bFGF, we tested 15 types of ginsenoside compounds. Among them, Rh3, Rh1, F1, and CK demonstrated antiproliferative effects on bFGF-induced melanocyte proliferation after 72 h of treatment. bFGF stimulated cell proliferation via extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) activation in various cell types. Western blot analysis found bFGF-induced ERK phosphorylation in melan-a. Treatment with Rh3 inhibited bFGF-induced maximum ERK phosphorylation and F1-delayed maximum ERK phosphorylation, whereas Rh1 and CK had no detectable effects. In addition, cotreatment with Rh3 and F1 significantly suppressed bFGF-induced ERK phosphorylation. Western blot analysis found that bFGF increased microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) protein levels in melan-a. Treatment with Rh3 or F1 had no detectable effects, whereas cotreatment with Rh3 and F1 inhibited bFGF-induced MITF expression levels more strongly than a single treatment. Conclusion: In summary, we found that ginsenosides Rh3 and F1 have a synergistic antiproliferative effect on bFGF-induced melan-a melanocyte proliferation via the inhibition of ERK-mediated upregulation of MITF.
The crystal structure of the title compounds with both coumarin and sulfonamide moieties were examined. These two groups have very special for their pharmaceutical and medicinal properties have been determined from single crystal X-ray diffraction data. In the title compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with unit cell dimension a = 28.633(3) ${\AA}$, b= 9.3215(7) ${\AA}$ and c= 24.590(2) ${\AA}$ [alpha & gamma=$90^{\circ}$ beta= $115.976(3)^{\circ}$]. In the structure The S1 atom shows a distorted tetrahedral geometry, with O1-S1-O2 [119.74 $(2)^{\circ}$] and N1-S1-C5 [$105.57(1)^{\circ}$] angles deviating from ideal tetrahedral values are attributed to the Thrope-Ingold effect. The sum of bond angles around N1 ($316.2(1)^{\circ}$) indicates that N1 is in sp2 hybridization. The Pyridine ring adopts boat conformation and pyran rings adopt a sofa conformation. The carboxylate group of atoms were disordered over two positions with site occupancy factors 0.598 (9):0.402 (9). Crystal structure and packing is stabilized by $C-H{\ldots}O$ intra and inter molecular hydrogen bond interactions.

The Xu-Tec process is also called the double glow surface alloying technology and is a new method of surface metallurgy which can produce an alloy layers with sp ecial phisical and chemical properties on the surface of common and inexpensive mater ials. Many super alloys and alloy steels, sueh as nickel base alloys, high speed steels and staiinless steels, have been produced by Xu-Tee Process on the surfaces of carbon steels. The depth of the alloy lasyers may vary from several microns up to 300 micr ons with alloying elements in a concentration of few percentage to 100%. World wide patents for Xu-Tec process have been granted in the United states, Canada, United Ki ngdom, Australia and Japan. High performance saw blades have been successfully produced by the Xu-Tee process with much simper processing steps and less cost than bimetal high speed saw blades. A comparison of the cutting times and wear rates of the Xu-Tee blades with the conventional bimetal blades has been made. The Xu-Tee bIases demonstrates sim ilar or better performance than bimetal blades. A Xu-Tec Unit for the commercial pr oduction of Xu-Tec saw blades has been designed and manufactured. This Unit can t reat 10,000 haek saw blades at one time. Three Xu-Tec hack saw blades production I ines have been set up in China. China.
