Social parasitism is occasionally found in some Polistes and Vespa species, such as Vespa dybowskii. We report a discovey of interspecific facultative social parasitism by Polistes sp. (possibly P. mandarinus) on Polistes djakonovi Kostylev in two rural areas of South Korea. P. djakonovi is very similar to Polistes sp. in its body color patterns except that the mark on the clypeus is different. In nest 1 (65 cells), we found 5 females of P. djakonovi and 4 females of Polistes sp. on 30 July 2014, whereas nest 2 (102 cells) contained 12 females and 16 males of P. djakonovi, and 3 females of Polistes sp. on 28 August 2013. Although we found the two nests in July and August, P. djakonovi seems to have been exploited by Polistes sp. at the end of the preemergence period (early to mid-June). The two nests found in this study had mainly white cocoon caps of P. djakonovi with several yellow ones of Polistes sp. In most cases of social parasitism, intruders have a larger size of the body or some body parts than the host in order to usurp the host; in contrast, this study showed that the hosts had lager bodies than the intruders.
Eleven strains had been previously isolated from kimchi and identified in our laboratory. The ability of each strain in aroma production was investigated by sensory evaluation. Among them Saccharomyc s sp. YK-17, Saccharomyces sp. YK-18, Saccharomyces sp. YH-3 and Saccharomyces fermentati YK-19 produced fruity flavour. Especially, Saccharomyces fermentati YK-19 produced apple and pineapple-like flavours. Pichia media YK-11, Saccharomyces sp. YK-20 and Pichia chambardii YH-4 produced wine-like flavour. Debaryomyces sp. YK-6, Debarymyces coudertii YK-10, Saccharomyces sp. YK-12 and Pichia haplophilia YH-5 produced alcoholic flavours. Using the good flavour producing strains as starters, various groups of kimchi were fermented, and the sensory characteristics of each group such as odor, taste and total acceptability were evaluated. The acidic odor, moldy odor and taste were reduced by adding starter, while the fresh sourness odor and taste similar to fruity fiavour were increased by starter. Comparing with the control group, these odor, taste and total acceptability were increased in the starter-added groups, such as Pichia edia YK-11, Saccharomyces sp. YK-17, and Saccharomyces, fermentati YK- 19. Saccharomyces fermentati YK-19 added kimchi group was higher siginificantly (P<0.05) than the others at the total acceptability. Volatile compounds of the culture broth of Saccharomyces fermentati YK-19 were analysed by gas chromatography, and 6 species of esters and 4 species of alcohols were identified. Among them, the ester substances which broth largely responsible for the apple-like flavour in the sensory evaluation, were found to be ethyl 2-methyl butvrate, ethyl pentanoate and ethyl acetate.
With the population growth and industrialization, the characteristics of discharged waste water and sewage have become more diverse. The removal of phosphorus (P) in the wastewater is essential for the prevention of eutrophication in the river and stream. This study was performed in order to estimate the field application of the Bacillus sp. 3434 BRRJ. Bacillus sp. 3434 BRRJ was cultured in the raw wastewater and synthetic medium at the 5 L reactor. The best optimum conditions for P removal by Bacillus sp. 3434BRRJ in the synthetic medium at the 5 L reactor were as follows: temperature, $30^{\circ}C$; P concentration, 20 mg/L; carbon sources, glucose + acetate (1:1); oxygen concentration, alternatively anaerobic and aerobic conditions. P removal efficiency under the optimum condition was 89.4%. In case of wastewater, P removal efficiency was 95.5% under controlled at $30^{\circ}C$. Through this study we confirmed that P removal by Bacillus sp. 3434BRRJ in case of wastewater was as effective as the synthetic medium. It is considered that Bacillus sp. 3434 BRRJ can be applied to the treatment of wastewater in order to biologically remove P from the wastewater on a large scale.
A bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacterium, which strongly inhibited the Lactobacillus plantarum recognized as an important acid spoilage microorganism in kimchi fermentation, was isolated from kimchi. From morphological, physiological, sugar fermentation, biochemical tests, and l6S rDNA sequencing results, the isolate was identified as an Enterococcus sp. and designated as Enterococcus sp. K25. The bacteriocin produced by Enterococcus sp. K25 inhibited several Gram-positive bacteria, including Lb. plantarum, whereas it did not inhibit Gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. Optimal temperature and pH for the bacteriocin production were $25^\circ{C}$ and 5.5, respectively. Enterococcus sp. K25 was applied to kimchi manufacturing alone and together with other preservatives (i.e., chitosan and fumaric acid). In addition, growth of lactic acid bacteria, pH, and titratable acidity (TA) were measured during aging at $5^\circ{C}$ and $10^\circ{C}$. Inoculation of Enterococcus sp. K25 together with fumaric acid showed the most synergistic effect on extension of kimchi shelf-life. Compared to control (no addition), the treatment prolonged the kimchi shelf-life up to 6 days, whereupon the eight-point TA value recognized as the edible limit was reached.
A visually servoed paired structured light system (ViSP) was recently proposed as a novel estimation method of the 6-DOF (Degree-Of-Freedom) relative displacement in civil structures. In order to apply the ViSP to massive structures, multiple ViSP modules should be installed in a cascaded manner. In this configuration, the estimation errors are propagated through the ViSP modules. In order to resolve this problem, a displacement estimation error back-propagation (DEEP) method was proposed. However, the DEEP method has some disadvantages: the displacement range of each ViSP module must be constrained and displacement errors are corrected sequentially, and thus the entire estimation errors are not considered concurrently. To address this problem, a pose-graph optimized displacement estimation (PODE) method is proposed in this paper. The PODE method is based on a graph-based optimization technique that considers entire errors at the same time. Moreover, this method does not require any constraints on the movement of the ViSP modules. Simulations and experiments are conducted to validate the performance of the proposed method. The results show that the PODE method reduces the propagation errors in comparison with a previous work.

In vitro and in vivo mycofumigation effects of the volatileproducing fungus Nodulisporium sp. CF016 isolated from stem of Cinnamomum loureirii and the role of its volatile compounds were investigated against phytopathogenic fungi. The volatile compounds produced by Nodulisporium sp. CF016 inhibited and killed a wide range of plant and storage pathogens including to Pythium ultimum, Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium oxysporum, Phytophthora capsici, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, Colletotrichum coccodes, Magnaporthe oryzae, Alternaria panax, Botrytis cinerea and Penicillium expansum. Mycofumigation with wheat bran-rice hull cultures of Nodulisporium sp. CF016 showed in vivo antifungal activity against gray mold caused by B. cinerea and blue mold caused by P. expansum of apple. The most abundant volatile compound produced by Nodulisporium sp. CF016 was $\beta$-elemene followed by 1-methyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene, $\beta$-selinene and $\alpha$-selinene. Nodulisporium sp. CF016 could be an attractive mycofumigant in controlling postharvest diseases of various fruits including apple.
