The effect of potassium metabolism on the soybean leaves was studied with comparison of other elements during the successive growing period. The results were as follows; 1. The percentage of potassium content showed remarkable increase not only in the first compound leaf at a stage which was growing vigorously and producing new leaves, but also in the fifth compound leaf at a stage which was taking a active metabolism of nitrogen and carbohydrate but not producing new leaves. However, the percentage of potassium content was decreased in the second compound leaf than in the first one. Such a result could be regarded as a potassium removal from mature leaves into immature and flowing out from stoma through respiration. During the pod-development the percentage of potassium content in the soybean leaf was decreased. 2. If nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium were added excessively in the nutrient solution, the percentage of potassium content in the soybean leaf had increased. The effects of these elements showed a remakable increase in the excessive plot of nitrogen than in that of phosphorus. At early stage the redtarded effect of phosphorus on the growth of soybean could be covered by potassium, however, at late stage it could not. The growth of soybean plant was much more inhibited by potassium, compared with nitrogen and phosphorus. New leaves could not be produced in the potassium deficient soybean plant after the third compound leaf. The normal growth of soybean plant could not be observed if only one element was excessively added to the culture solution, compared with the deficiency of other two elements.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes of mineral contents in radish leaves, soybean sprout and chwi namul by cooking method(boiling, steaming, sauting) and cooking time(1, 3, 5 min.). The residual rate of minerals(such as Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Iron and Magnesium) in radish leaves, soybean sprout and chwi namul by 1 minute sauting was the range of 83.2 to 99.1%. It was shown that sauting was desirable method for all three vegetables. The residual rate by the cooking method was sauting, steaming, boiling, in that order, but boiling in radish leaves and chwi namul were more desirable method than steaming for Calcium use. At the cooking method and cooking time, Potassium content in soybean sprout was reduced remarkably in 5 minutes boiling. Boiling of radish leaves and soybean sprout showed that Sodium was reduced remarkably after 5 minutes of boiling, 54.4% for radish leaves and 19.9% for soybean sprout, respectively.
Bacterial population density on soybean leaves was $10^2~10^5CFU/cm^2$. Bacterial population density was increased by progress of plant growth stage. Population density of soybean sprout rotting bacteria on soybean leaves was $0~10^3CFU/cm^2$. Population density of soybean sprouts rotting bacteria was related to cultivating area, but not related to plant growth stage. Cultivar and population density of soybean sprout rotting bacteria were less corelated, and varied by plant growth stages and plant parts. Erwina cypripedii, E. carotovora subsp. carotovora, Xanthomonas campestris pv. glycines, Staphylococcus sp., and Micrococcus sp. were identified as pathogenic bacteria causing soybean sprout rot. In generally population density of E. cypripedii, E. carotovora subsp. carotovora, Micrococcus sp., and X. campestris pv. glycines were high.
Changes in the level of metabolites in leaves and pods were examined with respect to the seed chemical composition in black soybean. There was no further increase in pod length after 42 days after flowering (DAF). Pod weight, however, persistently increase until 73 DAF, thereafter the weight was slightly lowered. The seed storage protein, however, increased drastically as the increasing rate of pod weight was lessened at 61 DAF. The accumulation of seed storage proteins was occurred conspicuously as the increasing rate of pod weight was slowed down. The chlorophyll content both in leaves and pods was drastically decreased after 50 DAF. The beginning of drastic reduction in chlorophyll content was occurred concomitantly with the reduction of soluble protein content in leaves. The sugar content in leaves showed similar tendency with chlorophyll and soluble protein content. The starch level in leaves, however, showed different changing pattern during seed development. The starch content in leaves was increased persistently until 66 DAF, thereafter the content was decreased drastically to about $55\%$ of maximal value at 66 DAF. Total phenolics content in leaves and the anthocyanins content in seeds were stable without noticeable increase until 66 DAF. The contents were increased dramatically after 66 DAF showing the synchronized pattern with the decrease in starch level in leaves. The levels of the selected metabolites in leaf and seed suggested that the accumulation of chemical components of black soybean seed is launched actively at 66 DAF. The profile of storage proteins was nearly completed at 61 DAF because there was no large difference in densitometric intensity among protein subunits after 61 DAF. In soybean, chemical maturation of seed begins around 61 to 66 DAF at which most metabolites in vegetative parts are decreased and remobilized into maturing seeds.
Using the enzyme activity staining, we studied the induction and distribution of chitinase isozymes, pathogenesis-related proteins, in intercellular fluids of bean and soybean leaves under stress conditions. The chitinase in intercellular fluids was barely detected in healthy plant leaves. By treatment of ethylene, pathogen (Fusarium oxysporum), or wounding, only 34 kD intercellular endochitinase was induced in bean leaves, while 30 kD and 36 kD intercellular endochitinases were induced in soybean leaves.

This paper presents a scattering model and measurements of backscattering coefficients for soybean fields. The polarimetric radar backscatters of a soybean field were measured using the ground-based X-band polarimetric scatterometer in an angular range from $20^{\circ}$ to $60^{\circ}$. The backscattering coefficients were also obtained using the COSMO-SkyMed (Spotlight mode, HH-polarization) from July to October 2010. The backscattering coefficients of the soybean field were computed using the 1st-order radiative transfer model (RTM) with field-measured input parameters. The soybean layer is composed of the stems, branches, leaves, and soybean pods. The stems, branches, and pods are modeled with lossy dielectric cylinders, the leaves are modeled with lossy dielectric disks. The estimated backscattering coefficients agree quite well with the field-measured radar backscattering coefficients.
Photosynthetic characteristics of soybean leaves infected with Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea were investigated for 8 days. The difference in photosynthesis rate between healthy and diseased soybean leaves decreased for 2 to 4 days after inoculation and then increased. In respiration rate, healthy and diseased leaves showed the same tendency as photosynthetic rate. The stomatal resistance increased following Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection. The total chlorophyll content of the infected leaf was less than that of the uninfected. Pseudomonas syringae pv. glycinea infection induced the malformation of stacked grana in chloroplast. Dry matter production declined after infection.
An undescribed black root rot of soybean, caused by Cylindrocladium crotalariae, was observed in Suweon area. The diseased plants showed yellowing at the top and dry rot at the root. Lesions of roots and stems in the soil were red to brown and main roots were cracked. Although not observed the disease in the field, leaves of inoculated test plants in the greenhouse exhibited circular, brown lesion surrounded by chloratic halos. The fungus was recovered in culture from the infected stem and root, and the perithecia of Calonectria crotalariae were demonstrated to be present as well as the cylindrocladium state. The fungus was pathogenic to the root, stem, petioles and leaves of soybean. The probable source of primary inoculum was microsclerotia formed in infected soybean root and stem from the previous season's soybean debris. Black root rot by this fungus was considered to be one of detrimental factors to the maximum yield of soybean. From the morphological and physiological characteristics and pathogenic behaviors, this fungus was identified as Cylindrocladium(Calonectria) crotalariae.
Two soybean cultivars, Kwanggyo and Hwanggeum (soybean mosaic potyvirus (SMV)-resistant cultivars), that had been inoculated with a virulent strain (G-5H, 4) of soybean mosaic potyvirus produced necrotic lesions on inoculated leaves as well as on upper trifoliate leaves. Cells in the lesion area contained sparse numbers of virus particles and very few characteristic pinwheel inclusions. Although a hypersensitive-like cellular response occurred in the two resistant cultivars, this response did not prevent the virus from spreading systemically in these resistant hosts, indicating a different mechanism from the general hypersensitive reaction in relation to host resistance.
In order to obtain the basic informations on the reasonable fertilization and soil management systems for a high soybean yield, both soybean leaves and soils were collected from 24 soybean-cultivated fields in central area of Korea, and analyzed. For this study, soybean leaves and soil were sampled together in July of 1988(growing season), and soil alone in October of 1988 (harvesting season) and April of 1989(sowing season) at each sampling site. The results might be summarized as follows: 1. The soil pH ranged between 4.8 and 6.8. and the pH after harvest decreased to 5.4 which compared with the pH 5.7 of growing season. 2. Both the 1N KCl extractable Al and the 1N $NH_4OAc$ extractable Al in soils were inversely correlated with the soil pH. the former concentration was negligible above pH 5.8. 3. The soil total-N and Bray 1-P after harvest were lower than those of growing season. The Bray 1-P's of sample soils were very high irrespective of sampling time. 4. The exchangeable Ca and Mg in soils even after harvest varied little whereas the exchangeable K decreased with time. 5. The N content in soybean leaves was not correlated with soil total-N, but highly correlated with the K content in soybean leaves. The Mg content in soybean leaves was also highly correlated with Ca content in suybean leaves and exchangeable Mg in soils.
