This experiment was carried out to investigate the changes of antioxidant enzymes activities in soybean leaves, exposed to 0.2ppm of ozone. We have investigated whether Eunhakong and Samnamkong may scavenge ozone induced activated oxygen species by invoking antioxidant enzymes such as ascorbate peroxidase(APOX), glutathione reductase(GR), monodehydroascorbate reductase(MDHAR), dehydroascorbate reductase(DHAR). Ozone exposure preferentially increased APOX, GR and MDHAR activities, whereas that of DHAR only decreased slowly. When soybean plans were fumigated with 0.2ppm of ozone, the levels of ascorbate and reduced glutathione decreased within a few hours. In eunhakong, which has, slightly a strong tolerance to ozone, was found to have higher antioxidants levels than samnamkong. However, there was no remarkable difference two cultivars in the activities of enzymes which protect plant against active oxygen species.

Pod shattering during the maturing stage causes a serious yield loss in soybean. It is the main limiting factor of soybean cultivation and mechanization. It is important to develop varieties suitable for mechanical harvesting and to develop energy-efficient agricultural machinery to save labor and costs. 'Daewonkong,' developed by the National Institute of Crop Science (NICS) in 1997, is an elite cultivar that occupies more than 80% of the soybean cultivation area in Korea because of its strong tolerance to pod shattering. The objectives of this study were to investigate the variation in pod shattering degree in a RIL population developed from a 'Daewonkong' parent and to select promising lines with pod shattering tolerance. 'Daewonkong' demonstrated a high level of tolerance to pod shattering compared to the 'Tawonkong' and 'Saeolkong' varieties, with no shattered pods after 72 hours of drying. Screening of pod shattering showed a clear distinction between the tolerant and susceptible varieties. Also, the distribution of shattering pod ratio in the two populations showed a similar pattern for three years. The promising lines with pod shattering tolerance included 27 lines in the 'Daewonkong'×'Tawonkong' population and 21 lines in the 'Daewonkong'×'Saeolkong' population. The promising lines are expected to be widely used as breeding parents for creating soybean cultivars with pod shattering tolerance.
This studies were conducted to investigate pathgenicity and host range of Colletotrichum dematium isolated from anthracnose of pepper, and phytoxicity of its culture filtrate and the partially purified toxin. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Investigation on the host range of C. dematium has revealed that pepper as well as soybean, tomato, spinach, and beet were highly susceptible, egg plant and water melon were moderately susceptible and stone leek was slightly suceptible, but no symptoms were produced on carrot, tabacco, cucumber and melon. 2. The culture filtrates of C. dematium in Czapeck dox liquid media were toxic to leaves of pepper and caused necrosis and wilting of the plant. The toxicity of culture filtrates was most active at 15 days after fungal growth in Czapeck dox liquid media and the toxin productivity in still culture was higher than that in shaking culture. 3. The partially purified toxic substance was isolated from the culture filtrates by the acetone precipitation method. When cuttings of various pepper cultivars were placed in the toxin solutions, suceptible cultivars and resistant cultivars were equally toxic and showed necrosis and wilting of the leaves. 4. Several other plants such as soybean, tomato and carrot were also affected with the toxin solution by shoot cutting bioassay and showed veinal necrosis, leaf spots and wilting of the shoots. 5. The acetone precipitation toxin affected seed germination of pepper, cucumber, sesame and egg plant and inhibited the growth of root and hypocotyl of the seedlings.
This study was conducted to investigate the Net photosynthesis and respiration rates among the varieties of Soybean(Eunha, Pangsa and Paldal that have high yields) at various leaf temperature and light intensity at the stage of $V_5$. The relations between the Net photosynthesis rate and SLW(specific leaf weight) and chlorophyll content were also investigated. 1. Net photosynthesis rates at $25^{\circ}C$ were $21.5mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ in cv. Eunha, $20.2mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ in cv. Pangsa and $18.5mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ in cv. Paldal. 2. Most cultivars of Soybean showed the maximum rates of Net photosynthesis at $25^{\circ}C$, especially in cv. Eunha. Also Net photosynthesis rates differed depending on the leaf shape. Long leaf shape(cv. Eunha) was better than round leaf shape(cv. Paldal) in Net photosynthesis rate. 3. Respiration rates of leaves in Eunha, Pangse and Paldal were $0.56mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $15^{\circ}C$, $0.79mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $20^{\circ}C$$1.15mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $25^{\circ}C$ and $1.37mgdm^{-2}h^{-1}$ at $30^{\circ}C$. 4. Specific leaf weight were $3.1mg/cm^2$ in Pangsa, $3.5mg/cm^2$ in Eunha and Paldal. No signlficant difference were showed in net photosynthesis rates and specific lear weight. 5. Leaf chlorophyll content were $2.48{\mu}g/gF.W.$ in Eunha, $2.19{\mu}g/gF.W.$ in Pangsa and $1.67{\mu}/g F.W.$ in Paldal. Significant difference were showed in Net photosynthesis rates and Leaf chlorophyll content. 6. The estimated compensation points at which net photosynthesis approached zero were $10{\mu}Em^{-2}s^{-1}$ in Eunha, Pangsa, and Palda at 1$5^{\circ}C$. The compensation point in cv. Eunha at $20^{\circ}C$ was $12P{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ while $13{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ in Pangsa and Palda. The compensation point in cv. Paldal at $25^{\circ}C$ was $18{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ while $16{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ in Eunha and Pangsa. The compensation point in cv. Palda at $30^{\circ}C$ was $23{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ Palda while $13{\mu}Em^{-2}s{-1}$ in Eunha and Pangsa.
Stomatal variation was observed at the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station in 1988 using 42 rice cultivars and 30 weed species. The shape, density or size of stomata was varied depending on the species. Two general trends, however, were found that more number of stomata was found at lower leaf epidermis than upper leaf epidermis and stomata number was negatively correlated with stomata size. Aneilema japonica and Portulaca oleracea had the least number of stomata having 17-20 stomata per $m^2$ for upper leaf epidermis and 17-54 stomata for lower leaf epidermis while Polygonum conspicuum had the greatest number of stomata (449 for upper leaf epidermis and 511 for lower leaf epidermis). Soybean, Aeschynomene indica, Ludwigia prostrata and Lactuca indica had the smallest in stomata size while the biggest stomata was found at P. oleracea and A. Japonica that had the least number of stomata. Cyperus species such as C. difformis, C. iria and C. serotinus had no stomata at upper leaf epidermis. The stomata were distributed only at lower leaf epidermis for these species. Potamogeton distinctus, on the other hand, had stomata almost at upper leaf epidermis and thus, hardly found the stomata at lower leaf epidermis. Among rice cultivars, Tongil-type had the greatest number of stomata followed by Indica-type and Japonica-type, in order. Cultivars released after 1960 had more stomata than cultivars released before 1960 for Japonica-type cultivars while stomata size had reversed trend. Jinheung had the least number of stomata (${\fallingdotseq}$ 150 per $mm^2$) while Yushin had the greatest number of stomata (350 for upper and 449 for lower leaf epidermis, respectively) among rice cultivars. Other cultivars having more than 350 stomata per $mm^2$ were Samgangbyeo, Milyang 23, Woonbongbyeo, etc.
The contents of sulfur, sulfur-containing protein and amino acids of soybean seeds of 518 genotypes as well as their inheritance and selection efficiency in early breeding generation were measured to facilitate breeding for soybean with high sulfur-containing amino acids. Average seed sulfur content of 518 cultivars was 0.33%, and ranged from 0.20 to 0.45%, and that of 30 wild soybeans was 0.35%, and ranged form 0.19 to 0.62%. Correlation coefficients between seed sulfur content and sulfur-containing protein and amino acids were 0.924$^{**}$ and 0.974$^{**}$, respectively. Seed sulfur content was tended to be high in soybean genotypes with late maturity, seed coat bloom, or green cotyledon. Sulfur content had -0.312$^{**}$ correlation coeficient with sugar content and -0.384$^{**}$ with 100 seed weight. Seed sulfur content was inherited quantitatively, in which additive effect was greater than dominant one, and proportion of genes with positive effects was similar to those with negative ones. Estimated narrow- and broad-sense heritabilities were 0.75 and 0.88 for seed sulfur content, respectively. Heritability measured from selection in early breeding lines for high or low seed sulfur content was 60~62.5% or 50~62,5%, respectively. And selection for high sulfur content increased by 14.7~18.8%, whereas that for low one decreased by 8.8~15.6%, when compared to that of random population. Therefore selection in early generation seemed to be clearly effective.
In order to determine ecological variations of flowering date and yields under the different seasonal cultures, and to select the higher yielding varieties which were adaptable to Korean climate, 100 mungbean cultivars were sown at the interval of 15 days from April 22 to July 21 in 1976. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. The number of days required to flowering from seeding were decreased by delaying the seeding date. 2. When accumulated temperature at first flowering from seeding were reached $945-1,126^{\circ}C$, the mungbean cultivars started to flower regardless of seeding dates. Especially, when mungbean was planted around standard planting date, the plants flowered for very short duration. 3. There were highly significant correlations between the number of days from seeding to flowering at each seeding date and standard planting date. 4. Yields per plant were tend to decrease with the delay of seeding date but there were no significant difference between seeding dates. Therefore, it appears that mungbean can be planted for longer period of time compared to other crops such as rice and soybean. 5. Highly significant correlations were found between the number of days of first flowering and yields per plant at most seeding dates. 6. It may be feasible to grow high yielding mungbean cultivars such as CES 140, LM 2100, LM 690, L 576 and LM 689 after harvesting of spring vegetables in May and before planting of fall vegetables.
Variation of anthocyanin contents were analyzed by different growing environments, three locations over three years with 3 black colored soybeans. Anthocyanin contents were different according to growing location, genotypes and planting time, so it can be concluded that anthocyanin content was effected by environmental and genetic variation. Planting date seemed to have a much greater influence on anthocyanin content than cultivar and location. Among different planting dates, anthocyanin contents increased in the seeds planted on June 15 rather than did May 30 and May 15. Compared with 3 cultivars and 3 locations, Ilpumgeomjungkong and Yeonchun had higher contents such as 11.58 mg/ and 9.85 mg/g, respectively. The correlations between color index and anthocyanin content were analyzed by Hunter'value. L (lightness) and b (yellowness) values were correlated negatively with D3G, C3G, Pt3G and total anthocyanin content while a (redness) value was correlated positively. The correlations between meteorological factors and anthocyanin content were analyzed. Anthocyanin content was correlated negatively with mean temperature and accumulated temperature whereas mean daily temperature difference showed positive correlation. We could conclude that the area in which mean temperature was low and daily temperature difference was high is good for attempts to improve black soybean seed quality by the increase of anthocyanin contents.
Studies were carried out to determine the effect of sulfur dioxide on leaf injury and yield of ten soybean cultivars. Plants were fumigated with 2.0 ppm of $SO_2$ for 4 or 8 h in a closed-top field chamber. In the comparison of foliar injury, Paldalkong and Eunhakong were more susceptible to $SO_2$ than Bogwangkong, Jangsukong, and Jangkeungkong. Correlations between chlorophyll contents, peroxidase activity, and stomatal resistance of leaves and foliar susceptibility were insignificant. However, significant correlations $(r=-0.611^{\ast})$ were found between superoxide dismutase activity and foliar injury rates. Dry weight, number of pods and total grains were significantly reduced by $SO_2$ fumigation but plant height, number of nods and weight of 100 grains were not affected. Yield reduction rates were higher in Eunhakong and Paldalkong than in Bogwangkong and Jangkeungkong. A liniar relationship was found between foliar injury rate and the percent crop loss with a significant coefficient of b=-1.17 in the susceptible cultivar of Paldalkong, but Bogwangkong, insusceptible cultivar, showed lower value of -0.165.
In order to evaluate the effect of soil salinity and culturing conditions including compost application and vinyl mulching on the maintenance of ridge and the growth of upland crops, three crops such as corn, soybean and sweet potato were experimented by using three or four cultivars of crops in the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land. Average soil salinity before seeding was 2 dS $m^{-1}$, which was low enough for general upland crops to grow. However, high soil EC more than 16 dS $m^{-1}$ was observed in some parts of the experimented field. In the experiment, it was concluded that growth retardation and yield reduction of summer upland crops might be from severe erosion of ridge, soil compaction, flooding or wet soil condition and high salinity of some parts, and then these deteriorations were possibly improved for good crop growth and yield increase by compost application and vinyl mulching cultivation in the Saemangeum reclaimed tidal land.
