  • This study was conducted to investigate how a labor saving for conventional hand sowing and respond to major agronomic traits under different planting density in 1993 and 1994. Each trial was a randomized block split plot with row spacing as the main plots and hill spacing as subplots. Sowing rate appeared lower in 20 or 25cm hill spacing using machine seeder than in hand sowing. Sowing time required reduced more 121 hours per hectare in 60cm row, 20cm hill spacings using machine seeder than in hand sowing. Increasing row and hill spacings reduced number of seedling stand per unit $area(m^2)$. Both number of pods per plant and grain weight per plant and showed highly increase in wide planting. Best yield obtained in 60cm row, 20cm hill spacing using machine seeder. Accumulative mean air temperature was positively correlated with stem height, number of pods per plant and yield, otherwise accumulative rainfall was negatively correlated with ones. A highly significant negative correlation was showed between number of seedling stand per unit $area(m^2)$ and number of branches, number of pods per plant, grain weight per plant and yield. Yield was positively correlated with number of branches, number of pods per plant and grain weight per plant.

  • The cemented sand and gravel (CSG) method is a construction technique that adds cement and water to rock-like materials, such as rivered gravel or excavation muck which that can be obtained easily at areas adjacent to dam sites. This study was performed to evaluate the planting properties of herbaceous plant and cool-season grass in CSG blocks that were manufactured by using CSG materials to develop environmentally friendly CSG method. The two types of CSG-0 without cement and CSG-100 with $100\;kg/m^3$ of cement were designed to evaluate compaction, unconfined compressive strength and growth of plants with cement content by using modified E compaction. To analyze growth properties of plants, germination ratio, visual cover, plant height and root length were measured in 4 weeks and 8 weeks after sowing. As the results, the germination regardless kinds of plants started within 5~7days and the germination ratio were in the range of 50~60 %. The visual cover of kinds of plants by visual rating system were in the range of 7~8 and the visual cover of tall fescue and perennial ryegrass was higher than that of lespedeza cuneata. The plant height and root length for tall fescue and perennial ryegrass in 8 weeks after sowing were in the range of 22~26 cm, 12~15 cm and 4~6 cm, 3~5 cm, respectively.

  • This experiment was carried out to obtain the information on seed dormancy, germinability during storage in wasabia japonica Matsum. $GA_3$ 100ppm+BA 10ppm was more effective than $GA_3$100ppm alone in breaking the dormancy. Storage of seeds pretreated with growth retardants (CCC, Uniconazol) seemed to be a useful method for preventing germination during storage. The stratification was an effective storage method to germinate the seeds for sowing them in fall.

  • This experiment was carried out to examine the effects of sowing method and summer management on the dry matter yield, dead matter, weed development and ground cover of orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) meadow. The experiment was allocated as a split-split plot design with three replications. The main plots were sowing method of drilling and broadcasting, sub plots were drainage of experimental field, adequate and inadequate, and sub-sub plots were cutting timeof orchardgrass, cutting before rainy season started and cutting after rainy season ended. The experiment was undertaken over a period of 14 months from September, 1983 to October, 1984. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in dry matter yield among treatments at the first cutting, but cutting before rainy season produced significantly more forage yield ($P{\le}0.01$) than cutting after rainy season at the second and third cuts. At the third cutting, drilled orchardgrass meadow showed a significant dry matter yield ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, 2. The dead matter of orchardgrass was accumulated only at the second cutting when orchardgrass meadow cut after rainy season. Orchardgrass produced in the adequate and inadequate drainage plots consisted 20.4 and 35.9% of dead material, respectively, but no significant difference was found between two drainage treatments. 3. Drilled orchardgrass meadow produced significantly less weeds ($P{\le}0.05$) than broadcast orchardgrass meadow, but the plots cut after rainy season produced significantly more weeds ($P{\le}0.01$) than the plots cut before rainy season. 4. The percent ground cover of orchardgrass in the plots cut before rainy season was significantly higher ($P{\le}0.01$) than that in the plots cut after rainy season at the second cutting. Drilled plots showed a slight increase in the ground cover than the broadcast, but the difference was not significant. The same trend of ground cover of the meadow estimated at the second cutting was sustained after the third cutting. 5. Based on the results of the experiment, it indicates that the second cut of orchardgrass should be made before rainy season related for maintaining high yield of the meadow. Drilling as a sowing method of orchardgrass meadow could be adopted in the view point of reducing weed development.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the appropriate sowing method and mixture seeding rate on germination of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) and white clover (Trifolium repens L.). The experimental design includes two sowing methods and six mixed seeding per each method: BT1:BP0 (broadcast seeding; B, Trifolium repens; T, Poa pratensis; P), BT1:BP2, BT1:BP3, BT3:BT1, BT2:BP1, BT0:BP1 and ST1:SP0 (spot seeding; S), ST1:SP2, ST1:SP3, ST3:ST1, ST2:SP1, ST0:SP1. The germination was the highest for both species when the seeding rate was higher than other species. In overall, the germination of white clover was higher and faster than Kentucky bluegrass. Two plots, BT2:BP1, ST1:ST2, were retained the balanced proportion of the germination rate. Therefore, It was suggested, for maintaining the balanced field, it is better to seed white clover twice Kentucky bluegrass on broadcast seeding and Kentucky bluegrass twice white clover on spot seeding. In regard of sowing method, broadcast seeding is better than spot seeding in terms of increasing the germination. It is necessary to supplement the result for real application by long-term monitoring.

  • Seed disinfection is a necessary process to decrease Bakanae disease in rice and is carried out at 30℃ to increase disinfection efficiency. However, the length of sprout after seed disinfection is not suitable for sowing, so additional processes such as seed soaking is needed. For this reason, this study was conducted to develop the efficient and effective seed disinfection method. When the seed disinfection finished after soaking seeds in cold water for 2 days, length of sprout was about 1.0 mm and sowing can be done without additional processes. In addition, the incidence of Bakanae disease was greatly reduced by 64% compared to conventional method. In order to find out why the newly developed method (disinfection after soaking) is more efficient than conventional method, soaked and not soaked seeds were stained using methylene blue staining. It was found that soaked seeds were more easily stained with about 50% of internal and external endosperm stained. Therefore, pesticide can be absorbed easily into internal endosperm of soaked seeds and efficiently destroy the spore of pathogen. As a results of this study, newly developed method will be useful as it can improve efficiency of agricultural work and also effectively decrease Bakanae disease compared to conventional method.
