  • Starting to occur during modern age, 'Comments on Current Events', or comments on current events, refers to the works which deliver the criticism or reputation about the issues of the time. In Hwangsong Sinmun, as new writing models conflicted with traditional narrative practices, complicated works with various metaphor and symbols were published serially. They are critical materials, which allow you to probe the way in which earlier traditional narrative changed through modern media. This article takes note of a pair of them: Biseol, Gukoenaengpyeong Unlike conventional serials, Biseol and Gukoenaengpyeong, which were 'Comments on Current Events' serials in Hwangsong Sinmun, have something in common with 'Narrative Editorials' for some reasons: interrogatory style which were frequently being used in editorials accounts for a large share of those two serials, their contents with a vein of humor also imply critical social issues, and they make separate comments additionally. In addition, we can see how the style of 'Sowha' in late Joseon Dynasty developed into short narrative through a new medium, the modern newspaper. After all, the two serials are important materials which can identify the way in which modern 'Sowha' was created and established as an epic literature, 'Comments on Current Events'.

  • Segmental dilatation of the small intestine is a rare form of the congenital intestinal anomaly. Many other combined anomalies have been reported in, but the association with colonic duplication has not been reported in the literature. We report a case of segmental dilatation of the distal ileum associated with colonic duplication. The main clinical and pathogenic aspects are discussed, and the literatures are reviewed.

  • This study aimed to figure out the numbers and note distributions and sexagenary cycles of old pyeongyoungs systematically, and estimate the nominal frequency of whangjongeum, the Korean tradition pitch standard. As a total 214 old stones in the National Palace Museum, the National Kukak Center, the Kukak National High School were counted by notes and sexagenaries. The nominal frequencies of 17 old whangjong stones' sounds were categorized by cluster analysis method. Using nominal frequencies of stones according to their sexagenaries and Korean traditional intonation were used to estimate the nominal frequencies of the whangjong. The nominal frequency can be estimated by 22 Keychuk stones as 266.9 Hz, by Cheongyu and Gabja stones as 262.4~262.5 Hz, and by Gabjin, Sowha 12 and Sowha 13 as Estimating by 22 Kyechuk stones which were matched with the records. These results seem to be more reliable, because it is based on the whol samples of old pyeongyoungs, while the former studies have been based on couples of whangjong stones' sounds.

  • Growth hormone (GH) treatment has been increasingly widely used for children with GH deficiencies as the survival rate of pediatric patients with malignancies has increased. Both GH and insulin-like growth factor-I have mitogenic and antiapoptotic activity, prompting concern that GH treatment may be associated with tumor development. In this review, the authors examined the relationship between GH treatment and cancer risk in terms of de novo malignancy, recurrence, and secondary neoplasm. Although the results from numerous studies were not entirely consistent, this review of various clinical and epidemiological studies demonstrated that there is no clear evidence of a causal relationship between GH treatment and tumor development. Nonetheless, a small number of studies reported that childhood cancer survivors who receive GH treatment have a small increased risk of developing de novo cancer and secondary malignant neoplasm. Therefore, regular follow-ups and careful examination for development of cancer should be required in children who receive GH treatment. Continued surveillance for an extended period is essential for monitoring long-term safety.

  • This is a case of tracheomalacia associated with esophageal atresia. An 11-month-old- male boy presented with a life-threatening apneic spell after correction of esophageal atresia (Gross type C). After complete exclusion of the other possible causes of the apneic spell, the presumptive diagnosis of tracheomalacia was made with fluoroscopy and 3-dimensional chest CT. The final diagnosis was made with rigid bronchoscopy under spontaneous respiration. The aortopexy was performed with intraoperative bronchoscopic examination. The postoperative period was unremarkably uneventful. The patient was discharged 9 days after the aortopexy and has remained well to date (5 months after the aortopexy).

  • This study focused on the Hwaho farm among Japanese farms that were at the center of rural exploitation during the Japanese colonial period. The contents of the study examined who Kumamoto, the owner of the farm, was, how he entered Chosun and Hwaho-ri, and how much land he owned. And what kind of buildings were in the Hwaho farm during the Japanese colonial period, how they were arranged, and how the space was organized according to the arrangement of buildings. Hwaho farm, the subject of the study, was the farm that managed the most land among Kumamoto's farms. Currently, farmer's housing, Japanese employee housing, warehouses, and medical examination centers remain. In addition to Kumamoto, other Japanese and related buildings remain throughout the town. However, in recent years, a number of houses of enemy property such as Daue House, Sowha Ryokan, and shops are being destroyed without any records or investigations, so this study aims to record academic records of houses of enemy property remaining in Hwaho-ri Village.

  • Purpose : Surveillance for detecting and managing latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is a key component of tuberculosis control. The classic surveillance tool, the tuberculin skin test (TST), may have some limitations when used in the Bacillus Calmette-$Gu{\acute{e}}rin$ (BCG)-vaccinated population. The object was to perform a blood test $QuantiFERON^{(R)}$-TB Gold In Tube (QFT-G IT) based on the detection of interferon-$\gamma$ ($IFN-{\gamma}$) released by T cells in response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific antigens, and to compare the efficacy of this new diagnostic tool for LTBI with that of TST. Methods : For six months, between October 1, 2006 and April 30, 2007, data were collected from 111 patients under 15 years of age at Severance Children's Hospital. TST and QFT-G IT tests were performed with children with or without contact histories of tuberculosis. In addition to these tests, we examined comparative data from 29 adults who had tuberculosis, to detect false negative rates in the QFT-G IT method. Results : Thirty-three children had household contact histories. In this group, 15% and 42% of cases were found to be positive using the QFT-G IT assay and TST, respectively. Agreement was low between these two tests (${\kappa}=0.39$). In the adult active tuberculosis group, the QFT-G IT false negative rate defined as a positive culture and a negative QFT-G IT result was 12.5%. Conclusion : In diagnosing LTBI in children, the usefulness of a whole-blood $IFN-{\gamma}$ assay employing TB-specific antigens will be revealed only by examining additional longitudinal clinical data; this study serves as a starting point in that process.
