  • The zooplankton composition, abundance, community structure, and species diversity in the major commercial fishery species spawning grounds in the southern coast of Korea were investigated in this study. A total of 80 taxa were sampled, with the mean abundance range of 5,612-11,720 ind. m-3 and the mean biomass range of 41.6-1,086.8 mg m-3. The dominant species were Paracalanus copepodites, Paracalanus parvus s. l., Oithona copepodites, Paracalanus nauplii, Noctiluca scintillans, Oithona similis, and Ditrichocorycaeus affinis. The species diversity indices were highest in August, suggesting that diversity is influenced by neritic and oceanic warm-water species. A cluster analysis with non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) revealed three groups of zooplankton communities. The April and May samples clustered into Group A, having the highest mean total zooplankton abundance and lowest species diversity, consisting mainly of temperate species located in the middle region of the southern coast of Korea. Cluster Group B was from the early summer season (June) and contained the highest species diversity with some oceanic and neritic zooplankton species. Cluster Group C from the summer season (July and August) mainly comprised P. parvus s. l. and O. similis. The redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that abundance is positively correlated with salinity, and chlorophyll-a concentrations.

  • We investigated the community structure and performed detailed characterization of fish larvae assemblages collected from the southern coast of Korea in the spring and summer of 2021. The total abundance of fish larvae varied from 193.6 to 1,915.6 ind. 10 m-3. The species were distributed across 10 orders with 23 families, and 41 taxa. The dominant taxa were Gobiidae spp., Engraulis japonicus, Nibea albiflora, Sebastiscus spp., Callionymus valenciennei, Pennahia argentata, Sebastes thompsoni, Parablennius yatabei, and Platycephalus indicus. Engraulis japonicus individuals were collected from April to August and their presence contributed greatly to the total abundance of fish larvae. The total number and abundance of species peaked in early summer and the Shannon-Weaver index was in the range 0.11-1.49. Redundancy analyses revealed that the major environmental factors affecting the fish larvae assemblage differed according to the dominant taxa. Water temperature, zooplankton density, and Paracalanus parvus s. l. density were the key factors affecting the spatial and temporal distribution of fish larvae in the southern coast of Korea in spring and summer.

  • This study presents future potential sea level change over the seas surrounding Korea using Climate Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 9 model ensemble result from Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs), downloaded from icdc.zmaw.de. At the end of 21st century, regional sea level changes are projected to rise 37.8, 48.1, 47.7, 65.0 cm under RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP6.0 and RCP8.5 scenario, respectively with the large uncertainty from about 40 to 60 cm. The results exhibit similar tendency with the global mean sea level rise (SLR) with small differences less than about 3 cm. For the East Sea, the Yellow Sea, and the southern sea of Korea, projected SLR in the Yellow Sea is smaller and SLR in the southern sea is larger than the other coastal seas. Differences among the seas are small within the range of 4 cm. Meanwhile, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) data in 23 years shows that the mean rate of sea level changes around the Yellow Sea is high relative to the other coastal seas. For sea level change, contribution of ice and ocean related components are important, at local scale, Glacial Isostatic Adujstment also needs to be considered.

  • We aimed to study the structure of the zooplankton community in the Southern Sea of the Republic of Korea. Zooplankton samples were collected in February (winter), May (spring), August (summer), and November (autumn) of 2020. The zooplankton collected belonged to a total of 166 taxa and 12 phyla, including some unidentified individuals and those from upper taxa. The number of taxa collected were the highest in winter at 117, and the lowest in May at 93. The dominant taxa were Oikopleura spp. in the winter, Gastropoda larvae in the spring, and Paracalanus parvus s.l. in the summer and autumn. The community structure of the zooplankton was clearly distinguishable between the seasons. The mean density of zooplankton was the highest in autumn and the lowest in summer (576,039 and 313,000 individuals/1,000 m3, respectively). Based on the analysis of relationships between the density of the six major taxa and environmental factors, a significant correlation (P<0.05) between the four taxa and environmental factors was found. Therefore, in order to understand changes in the zooplankton community, quantitative and qualitative investigations of biological factors as well as physical factors should be conducted.

  • The feeding habits of Spanish mackerel (Scomberomorus niphonius) were studied based on the examination of stomach contents of 445 specimens collected from January to December 2004, in the Southern Sea of Korea. The size of Spanish mackerel ranged from 26.1 to 105.4 cm in fork length (FL). Spanish mackerel was a piscivorous fish which mainly consumed teleost fishes such as chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) and anchovy (Engraulis japonicus). Its diet also included small quantities of shrimps, stomatopods, cephalopods, crabs, polychaetes, amphipods, cumaceans and copepods. Smaller individuals (<60 cm FL) consumed small fishes such as Engraulis japonicus and crustaceans. The portion of these prey items decreased with increasing fish size, and this decrease was paralleled with increased consumption of lager fishes such as Scomber japonicus and Cololabis saira. The prey size increased with the increase of fish size.

  • A faunal study on the marine amphipods at eight sites of the continental shelf region in the Southern Sea, Korea was conducted from 16-17 August 2022. In this study, 26 amphipod species in 19 genera and 14 families were found. Among these 14 families, the family Ampeliscidae with six species showed the highest abundance, followed by the family Caprellidae with five species. Amphipods were collected using conical nets, MOCNESS nets, SM grabs, and trawls. When using the SM Grab for collecting benthic sediment, 15 out of a total of 26 amphipod species were surveyed, indicating the highest diversity of amphipod species. Out of the total 26 species, four identified species (Ampelisca pygmaea Schellenberg, 1938; Byblis longiflagelis Ren, 1998; Caprella iniquilibra Mayer, 1903; Primno latreillei Stebbing, 1888) and five unidentified species(Themisto sp., Liljeborgia sp., Dulichiella sp., Cranocephalus sp., Primno sp.) are newly recorded in Korean fauna. These newly recorded species are fully illustrated and compared with related species. We provide a list amphipod fauna in Southern Sea of Korea including figures and tables.

  • Monitoring of water surfaces through permanent measurement of hydrodynamic and meteorological data is one of the main requirements in safe and sustainable water management. The Caspian Sea, the major surface water body in Iran, significantly affects more than 600 km of urban and industrial coastline. In the present work, an integrated marine monitoring network for the entire southern coastline of the Caspian Sea was developed. The main design concerns centered on the network measuring components and data recording, checking, filtering, gap recognition, and transferring systems. Four coastal monitoring stations were assigned, along with two regional collecting stations and one central data station for gathering, checking and delivering recorded data at different access levels. Applicable guidelines on selection of measuring devices for both shallow and deep water zones are presented herein.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the climate change exposure of fisheries and fish species in the southern sea of Korea under the RCP climate change scenarios. The extent of exposure was calculated through weighted sum of the sea temperature forecasted by National Institute of Fisheries Science, and the weight were obtained from the time-space distribution of each fisheries or species, based on the micro-data for the fishing information reported by each fisherman. Results show that all the exposed sea temperature of RCP8.5 is higher than that of RCP4.5 in year 2100 as well as in near 2030, therefore it is thought to be very important to reduce the GHG emission even in the short term. The extent of exposure was analyzed to be comparatively high especially in the fisheries such as anchovy drag nets and species like cod, anchovy and squid. Meanwhile the method of this study is considered to be excellent to obtain the accurate extent of exposure under RCP scenarios, and therefore it is applicable on assessing the vulnerability of climate change in fisheries.
