용남광도 해역의 굴(Crassostrea gigas) 및 육상오염원에서 분리한 대장균(Escherichia coli)의 항생제 내성 (Antimicrobial Resistance in Escherichia coli Isolated from Oyster Crassostrea gigas and Inland Pollution Sources in the Yongnam-Gwangdo Area, Korea)

  • We isolated and characterized Escherichia coli (E. coli) from oyster Crassostrea gigas and inland pollution sources on Yongnam-Gwangdo island and neighboring areas on the southern coast of Korea in 2014-2015. A total of 222 strains of E. coli were isolated from 132 oysters and 88 samples from inland pollution sources. These 222 isolates were tested for their susceptibility to 24 antimicrobial agents, and 221 isolates were found resistant to the tested antibiotics. Of these 99.5% and 70.7% of the isolates showed very high resistance to rifampin and cephalothin respectively, followed by tobramycin (23.4%), streptomycin (20.2%), tetracycline (19.4%), cefepime (18.9%), ceftazidime (18.9%) and nalidixic acid (16.7%). The resistance rate of E. coli isolated from oysters was higher than that from inland pollution sources. In addition, multiple resistance to at least four antibiotics were present in 73.2% and 26.5% of E. coli isolates from oysters and inland pollution source samples, respectively.

On the Cold Water Mass Around the Southeast Coast of Korean Peninsula

  • The cold water mass around the southeast coast of the Korean Peninsula is analyzed by using CSK data from 1966 through 1970. It is shown that this water mass flows down from the region offshore of Jukbyun to the area of Youngil Bay along the 100meter contour line of bottom topography. In ordinary summer conditions when the current velocity in the Korea Strait is usually above about 50cm/sec and the wind direction is southwest, the cold water ascends to the surface and makes the surface temperature gradient large, unless disturbed by a tropical cyclon. The bottom water of the Korea Strait is formed by the stratification after the Tsushima intermediate water and the Japan Sea intermediate water have been mixed. In winter the Tsushima intermediate water with high salinity sinks rapidly around the inlet of the Japan Sea and prevents the Japan Sea intemediate water from entering the Korea Strait.

한국산 퉁돔과 어류 1미기록종, Symphorus nematophorus (New Record of the Chinamanfish, Symphorus nematophorus (Perciformes: Lutjanidae) from Korea)

  • 퉁돔과에 속하는 Symphorus nematophorus 1개체 (표준체장 481 mm)가 거제 연안의 정치망에서 처음으로 채집되었다. 이 종은 등지느러미 연조의 앞부분이 길게 연장되어 있고, 눈과 코구멍 사이에 파인 홈이 있으며, 서골에는 이빨이 없고 체측에는 선명한 9개의 파란 줄이 존재한다. 이 미기록종의 속명과 국명은 각각 "실퉁돔속"과 "실퉁돔"으로 제안한다.

Southeast Asia in International History: Justification and Exploration

  • Despite its centrality at a pivotal crossroads of both land and sea of East-West trade, communications and travel, the region now known as Southeast Asia provides very few scholarly works situating or featuring it in an international context. Because of this paucity, there is immense scope for exploration. But prior to further explorations, justification is needed to establish that Southeast Asia, as a region, is a subject of interest, relevance, and significance in a global context. Southeast Asia was home to several empires whose reach transcended the region and beyond. Southeast Asia in, and as part of international history as an area of study is therefore justifiable. Moreover, other factors come into play, viz. geography, resources, migration, diffusion of ideas and beliefs from without and accommodation from within, shared experience of imperialism and colonialism, decolonization, and the Cold War, and the collective fate under the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), that further bolster its rationalization as a component of international history. Explorations, on the other hand, examine issues and obstacles that contribute to the paucity of works on Southeast Asia in international history. Furthermore, in contextualizing Southeast Asia in international history, there might appear challenges that need to be identified, confronted, and resolved.

Bioaccumulation of Heavy Metals in the Mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in the Changseon area, Korea, and Assessment of Potential Risk to Human Health

  • From 2008 to 2013, the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis were collected from a major area of mussel production (Changseon area), which is a designated shellfish-cultivating area for export, located on the southern coast of Korea. The samples were analyzed for mercury (Hg) using a direct Hg analyzer and for other metals, such as cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), arsenic (As), chromium, copper, nickel, and zinc, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The concentrations and bioaccumulation of the heavy metals were determined, and a potential risk assessment was conducted to evaluate their hazards towards human consumption. The concentration and bioaccumulation ratio of Cd were the highest of the three hazardous metals (Cd, Pb, and Hg). The concentrations of hazardous metals in all samples were within the limits set by Korea and other countries. The estimated dietary intake (EDI) was compared to the provisional tolerable daily intake (PTDI) adopted by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The EDIs of all heavy metals tested for mussel samples ranged from 0.01 to 4.99% of the PTDI; the highest value was measured for As. The hazard index (HI) can be used to assess the risk of heavy metal consumption associated with contaminated food. The HI for all samples was far less than 1.0, which indicates that the mussels produced in the Changseon area do not represent an appreciable hazard to humans and are fit for consumption.

  • Acanthamoeba, one of free-living amoebae (FLA), remains a high risk of direct contact with this protozoan parasite which is ubiquitous in nature and man-made environment. This pathogenic FLA can cause sight-threatening amoebic keratitis (AK) and fatal granulomatous amoebic encephalitis (GAE) though these cases may not commonly be reported in our clinical settings. Acanthamoeba has been detected from different environmental sources namely; soil, water, hotspring, swimming pool, air-conditioner, or contact lens storage cases. The identification of Acanthamoeba is based on morphological appearance and molecular techniques using PCR and DNA sequencing for clinico-epidemiological purposes. Recent treatments have long been ineffective against Acanthamoeba cyst, novel anti-Acanthamoeba agents have therefore been extensively investigated. There are efforts to utilize synthetic chemicals, lead compounds from medicinal plant extracts, and animal products to combat Acanthamoeba infection. Applied nanotechnology, an advanced technology, has shown to enhance the anti-Acanthamoeba activity in the encapsulated nanoparticles leading to new therapeutic options. This review attempts to provide an overview of the available data and studies on the occurrence of pathogenic Acanthamoeba among the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) members with the aim of identifying some potential contributing factors such as distribution, demographic profile of the patients, possible source of the parasite, mode of transmission and treatment. Further, this review attempts to provide future direction for prevention and control of the Acanthamoeba infection.

한국 남동해역의 냉수대 발생 변화와 Cochlodinium polykrikoides 적조와의 상관성 연구 (Study on the Correlation Between the Upwelling Cold Waters and Cochlodinium polykrikoides Red Tide in the Southeast Sea of Korea)

  • 한반도 동해 남부해역은 매년 하계에 집중적으로 냉수대가 형성되어 빈번한 이상해황이 발생한다. 동해안에 발생하는 냉수대는 바람의 영항을 지배적으로 받는데 남풍계열의 바람이 3일에서 7일 이상 지속적으로 불어오는 경우 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 냉수대의 발생과 변화 및 Cochlodinium polykrikoides 적조와의 상관성을 분석하기 위하여 기상청, 한국수력원자력, 해양조사원의 부이의 수온과 풍향 및 풍속, COMS/GOCI의 클로로필 자료, 바람자료와 NOAA에서 제공하는 GHRSST Level 4 SST, 국립수산과학원의 적조속보자료를 활용하였다. 동해안 연안용승시 용승된 수괴는 해류를 따라 북쪽으로 이동하는 특성을 보이며 수괴를 따라 고농도의 클로로필이 형성되는 특성을 보였다. 남쪽의 동한난류의 세력이 강하게 형성될 때 적조가 북상하는 특성을 나타내었다.

First report of Paranophrys marina (Protozoa, Ciliophora, Scuticociliatia) isolated from olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea: morphological and phylogenetic analysis

  • Scuticociliates are one of the serious parasitic threats faced by the marine aquaculturists worldwide. To date, Uronema nigricans, Philasterides dicentrarchi, Miamiensis avidus, Uronema marinum, and Pseudocohnilembus persalinus have been reported as the important culprit species causing scuticociliatosis in fish. The present paper reports the finding of an additional scuticociliate isolate from the gill of diseased olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus in Korea. Based on the morphological characteristics, a scuticociliate in this study was identified as Paranophrys marina. Phylogenetic analysis placed P. marina as a sister lineage to three species of Pseudocohnilembus and Mesanophrys carcini within the order Philasterida.

굴 Crassostrea gigas 부착기 유생의 부착에 미치는 신경전달물질종의 영향 (The Effect of Neuroactive Compounds on Settlement of Pacific Oyster, Crassostrea gigas Pediveliger Larvae)

  • 굴 부착기 유생의 부착 유인 효과를 조사하기 위하여 6종류 (L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, serotonin, ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid, norepinephrine, epinephrine, methyl bromide)의 신경전달물질을 채묘기질에 직접 처리하여 굴 부착기 유생의 부착 유인 효과를 조사하였다. 조사결과 평균 채묘율는 각각 $29.1{\pm}2.2%$, $35.4{\pm}2.0%$, $19.2{\pm}2.1%$, $11.0{\pm}1.2%$, $15.2{\pm}0.9%$$42.7{\pm}2.7%$ 로 MB 처리구에서 가장 높은 결과를 보였고, norepinephrine 처리구에서 유의적으로 가장 낮은 결과를 보였다 (P < 0.05). 채묘기질 $cm^2$당 부착밀도와 부착빈도는 ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid와 methyl bromide 처리구에서 각각 $1.97{\pm}1.42$$2.37{\pm}1.86$ 마리/$cm^2$로 가장 높은 부착밀도를 보였다 (P < 0.05). 본 실험결과 굴 인공종묘배양장 등에서 부착기 유생의 부착요율을 높이는데, ${\gamma}$-amino butyric acid와 Methyl bromide를 이용하면 효과적일 것으로 보인다.

  • Recently, the supply and demand of aggregate in the Southeast region has been disrupted because supply of sea sand decreased due to discontinuation of collecting the EEZ aggregate in the southern sea. This study analyzed the Trends of Supply and Demand of Aggregate in the Southeastern Region of South Korea in order to find a solution these social problem.
