Longitudinal Gradients and Seasonal Dynamics of Nutrients, Organic Matter and Conductivity Along the Main Axis of Han-River

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluate spatial and temporal dynamics of nutrients (TN, TP), organic pollution (BOD, COD), and ionic dynamics (electrical conductivity, EC) in the North Han-River, South Han-River, and merged downriver using the dataset of $1998{\sim}2007$, obtained from the MEK (Ministry of Environment, Korea). Accord. ing to interannual nutrient analysis, TN varied slightly in the North Han-River and South Han-River, but decreased in the merged downriver along with BOD. Longitudinal analysis in the water quality showed that BOD, COD, and nutrients had linear decreasing trend along the main axis of headwater-to-downriver. Concentrations of TP and TN in the North Han-River averaged $26.97{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, $1.696mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively, which were minimum in the three watersheds, followed by South Han-River and then the merged downriver in order. Ratios of TN:TP in the watersheds were >40 in all the sites, indicating that nitrogen may be enough for periphyton or phytoplankton growth and phosphorus may be limited partially. After the North Han-River water is merged with South Han-River, the concentrations of BOD, COD, TN, and TP were similar to the values of $S6{\sim}S7$, respectively or a little bit higher, but increased abruptly in Site M4 (Fig. 3). Thus, mean values of all the water quality parameters in the reach of $M4{\sim}M7$ sites were greater than any other sites. Seasonal data analysis indicated that BOD and EC in the downstream ($S3{\sim}S7$) was greater in the premonsoon than two seasons of the monsoon and postmonsoon, and no significant differences in BOD between the three seasons were found in the upstream ($S1{\sim}S2$). Empirical models of COD in the merged downriver was predicted ($R^2=0.87$, p>0.01, slope = 0.84, intercept = -1.28) well by EC. These results suggest that EC to be measured easily in the field may be used for estimations of nutrients and organic matter pollutions in the merged downriver and these linear models are cost-effective for the monitoring of the parameters.

팔당호 상류 유입하천의 수질 및 식물플랑크톤 분포 패턴 (Water Quality and Phytoplankton Distribution Pattern in Upper Inflow Rivers of Lake Paldang)

  • The distribution pattern of water quality parameters and phytoplankton biomass in upper inflow rivers of lake Paldang had surveyed. In North-Han river system, nutrient concentrations and algal biomass was below the standard of mesoand oligotrophy from lake Soyang to lake Paldang, maintaining good water quality, except the N5 site located near the Chuncheon-Si, showing high nutrients concentrations and algal biomass. The algal biomass of the South-Han river system showed oligotrophic level in the upstream near the lake Chungju, and increased along the flow direction showing eutrophic level in the downstream within the lake Paldang area. On the other hand, the highest concentrations of nutrients were detected in the middle stream near the Yeoju-Si and Yangpyung-Gun rather than in the downstream suggesting algal biomass in lake Paldang would not come from the upper river area but come from the growth within the lake area using nutrients from the upper inflow river.

팔당호의 질소거동과 수지 (The Nitrogen Behavior and Budget in Lake Paldang)

  • We studied the nitrogen behavior and budget of Lake Paldang from March to December 2008. The particulate nitrogen (PN) concentrations ranged from 7 to 13% of the total nitrogen concentration (TN) in the stream inflows, the downstream outflow, and the lake water. The nitrate nitrogen ($NO_3-N$) concentration ranged from 67 to 78% of the TN. In the three rivers of Lake Paldang, Gyeongan River (In3 site) had the highest average of the TN, 5.037 mgN/L, but North Han River (In2 site) had the lowest average TN, 1.683 mgN/L. South Han River (In1 site) had the average TN of 2.399 mgN/L. In the dam discharge, TN showed the average 2.063 mgN/L. In the lake water, L4 site (Gyeongan River area) had the highest average TN, 3.781 mgN/L, but L3 site (North Han River) had the lowest average TN, 1.587 mgN/L. Total input of nitrogen loads to Lake Paldang was about 30,875 ton/year in 2008. Inflow rivers contributed 30,643 ton/year (South Han River: 18,111 ton/year (59%), North Han River: 11,333 ton/year (37%), and Gyeongan River: 1,199 ton/year (4%)). The atmospheric deposition had 135 ton/year, the nitrogen release from the bottom sediments had 88 ton/year, and macrophytes had 9 ton/year. Total output of nitrogen loads from Lake Paldang was about 31,256 ton/year. The downstream from dam contributed 29,877 ton/year, and the sediment deposition was 1,379 ton/year.

한강수계의 주요 오염원별 부하량 비교분석 (Comparative Study on Loading Rate of Main Pollution Sources in Han-River)

  • The purposes of this research were constructed the database, based on graphing the present water pollution in Han-river due to livestock wastewater(LSW). The LSW was below 1% in respect to quantity but about 7% in respect to pollutants loading in overall Han-river. The ratio of untreated LSW is 18% to 28%, which was higher compared to the municipal and industrial wastewater. In other words, LSW was about 0.05 times of municipal wastewater in respects to quantity but 2 times in respect to the ratio of untreated wastewater. So, it was necessary for treating LSW. The pollutants loading due to livestock wastewater of the South Han-river, North Han-river and main stream were 19.7%, 19.4% and 4.0%, respectively. This was about 7% in overall Han-river. We separated the Han-river into upper, mid and down stream. As a result, we found that the livestock wastewater is the main water pollution source of upper Han-river.

퇴적층의 온도별 배양에 따른 조류군집 형성과 이취미물질 발생 특성 (Formation of Phytoplankton Community and Occurrences of Odorous Compounds for Sediment Incubation by Water Temperature)

  • We analyzed the formation of phytoplankton community and the occurences of odorus compound from benthic cyanobacteria in North, South Han-River, Paldang-Lake and Kyeongan-Stream sediments. Sediments were incubated in different water temperature. Akinetes were found (0~500 cells/g) with the highest number on sediment in Yangsoo railroad bridge (YC). The result showed that Anabaena ranged between $0.02{\sim}0.53{\times}10^3cells/mL$ in Sambong (SB), YC, Mukhyen-Stream (MS), Paldang-Lake (P2) and Kyeongan-Stream (KK). The total 68 taxa of phytoplankton were observed during the incubation period. A standing crop of phytoplankton was in the range of $0.13{\sim}8.97{\times}10^3cells/mL$ and Microcystis appeared in SB, YC, P2 and KK sites with $20{\sim}25^{\circ}C$ temperature. In South Han-River (P3), Oscillatoria tenuis was dominant at $25^{\circ}C$ temperature. The concentration of geosmin was the highest in SB-$15^{\circ}C$ (25.5 ng/L), and the concentration of 2-MIB was the highest in P3-$25^{\circ}C$ (286.8 ng/L). Odorous compounds were detected in all the temperature conditions from each site. Our results indicate that the dominant benthic cyanobacteria (O. tenuis, O. limosa, Phormidium tenue and Pseudanabaena limnetica) have high correlation with the occurrence odorous compounds and 2-MIB.

남북공유하천 북한강의 물이용 문제점 및 수리권 추정 (I) -임남댐 유역변경에 의한 하류 영향 분석 (Problems of Water Use and Estimation of Water Right in North Han River Shared by North and South Korea (I) -Analysis of Diversion Impacts on Downstream Area by Imnam Dam)

  • 북한강 수계의 경우 북한이 임남댐을 개발하여 유역변경식으로 물을 이용하고 있어 하류지역에서 여러 가지 문제가 나타나고 있다. 따라서 남 북한이 공유하천을 효과적으로 관리하기 위해서는 수량이나 수질 등 다양한 분야에서의 협력이 절실히 요구되고 있다. 그러나 남 북공유하천에서 상 하류국가간 물이용의 공평성을 실현하기 위한 노력은 매우 미흡한 실정이다. 본 논문에서는 남북공유하천의 공평한 물이용의 판단기준이 되는 수리권을 검토하기 위해 북한의 임남댐에 의한 영향을 주요 분야별로 심도 있게 분석하였다. 분석결과, 한강유역의 용수공급은 1978년을 이수안전도 평가를 위한 기준갈수년으로 할 경우 임남댐으로 인해 379백만$m^3$/년의 공급부족이 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 아울러 한강 수계의 발전용댐도 유입량 감소로 인하여 연간발전량이 234GWh/년 감소하게 되었고, 수질은 북한강 삼봉리 지점 기준 BOD 약 0.065 ppm 증가하는 것으로 분석되었다. 결과적으로 남북공유하천에서 북한의 절대영토주권주의에 입각한 불공평한 수자원 이용은 하류국가인 남한에 직 간접적으로 상당한 영향을 미치고 있음을 확인하였다.

한강수계분지내 하천수의 지구화학적 특성 (The Geochemical Characteristics of the River Water in the Han River Drainage Basin)

  • 한강 수계 분지 내의 하천수(지표수)와 서울 지역 지하수의 화학적 특성 규명과 용존 이온종의 기원을 연구하기 위해 1996년 3월-4월 동안 하천수 시료 60개에 대하여, pH, TDS등과 용존이온의 화학분석을 실시하였다. 남한강과 북한강 하천수의 화학 성분은 주로 수계 분지 지역에 분포하는 암석에 의해 영향을 받고 있으며, 한강본류의 하천수는 인위적인 오염에 의한 영향이 크게 나타나고 있다. 즉, 남한강은 상류 지역에 분포하는 탄산염암, 탄광 및 금속 광산 폐수 등에서 용출된 $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, ${HCO_3}^-$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ 등이 현저하며 북한강은 화강암질암의 풍화 산물인 $K^{+}$, $Na^{+}$ $Ca^{2+}$등의 이온종이 특징적이다. 한편 양수리에서 상기2개 하천이 합류하여 서울 도심을 지나는 한강 본류는 ${SO_4}^{2-}$, ${NO_3}^{-}$ ${PO_4}^{2-}$, $CL^-$ 등 생활 하수 오염의 영향이 현저하게 나타나고 있다. 한강 본류로 유입되는 서울 지역의 왕숙천, 탄천, 중랑천, 안양천의 4의 지천은 $NO_2$, $CL^-$, ${PO_4}^{3-}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$, Mn 등 인위적 인 오염 현상이 크게 나타나고 있다. 한강 하천수의 화학 성분의 군집, 요인 및 회귀 분석 결과, 전체 자료 분산은 오염 인자에 의한 분산이 약 79%, 지질과의 물-암석 반응에 의한 분산이 약 7% 이다. 남한강과 북한강의 합류 지점에서의 C $l^{-}$ 에 대한 혼합 비율은 약 60 : 40이다. 1981년 분석 자료와 1996년 자료의 비교에서 암석 풍화에 의한 1차적 용존 성분인 $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, ${HCO_3}^-$ 등은 변화가 적으나 $Na^{+}$, ${NO_3}^{-}$, ${PO_4}^{3-}$, ${SO_4}^{2-}$ 등 인위적 오염원의 성분은 크게 증가하는 경향이 있다.

Impacts of dam discharge on river environments and phytoplankton communities in a regulated river system, the lower Han River of South Korea

  • To understand the effects of fluctuations in dam discharge due to river environments and phytoplankton communities, we monitored such environments and phytoplankton communities biweekly, from February 2001 to February 2002 and from February 2004 to February 2005, in the lower Han River (LHR), South Korea. The phytoplankton abundance during the dry season was approximately two times higher than that during the rainy season. In particular, fluctuations in diatom assemblages, which constituted over 70% of the total phytoplankton abundance, were affected severely by the changes in the discharge. When a large quantity of water in a dam was discharged into the LHR, the conductivity and the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) decreased rapidly, whereas the concentrations of suspended solids (SS), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), and dissolved silica (DSi) increased immediately. Time-delayed relationship also revealed that the dam discharge had an immediately significant negative relationship with phytoplankton abundance. On the whole, fluctuations in phytoplankton communities in the LHR were influenced much more by hydrodynamics such as dam discharge than by the availability of nutrients. Thus, the variability in these concentrations usually parallels the strength of river flow that is associated with summer rainfall, with higher values during periods of high river discharge.

  • This paper provides the checklist of statistical methods in the water environmental research of Han and Nakdong river basins in South Korea. There are many errors pointed out in adopting statistical methods for the researches, as an example, basic statistical assumptions are missed for t-tests or regression analyses. Some new ideas are proposed for better researches of the river basins in Korea.

Spectral 해석(解析)에 의한 한강수계(漢江水系)의 사행분석(蛇行分析) (Spectral Analysis of Meanders in the Han River System)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)에서는 유로(流路)의 방향각(方向角)과 방향편각(方向偏角)의 자료(資料)를 가지고, 자기상관계수(自己相關係數)와 variance spectrum을 이용(利用)하여 한강유역(漢江流域) 하천(河川)들에 대한 사행특성(蛇行特性)을 분석(分析)하였다. 사행파장(蛇行波長) 산정(算定)에는 방향각(方向角) spectra 보다는 방향편각(方向偏角) spectra의 이용(利用)이 더 좋음을 알 수 있었으며, 방향편각(方向偏角) spectra로부터 산정(算定)된 지배사행파장(支配蛇行波長)은 북한강수계(北漢江水系), 남한강수계(南漢江水系), 한강하류수계(漢江下流水系) 하천(河川)들 순(順)으로 점차(漸次) 크게 나타나는 경향(傾向)을 보였다. 또한, 유로(流路)의 방향각(方向角) 및 방향편각(方向偏角)의 spectra로부터 북한강수계(北漢江水系), 남한강수계(南漢江水系), 한강하류수계(漢江下流水系) 하천(河川)들의 사행성향(蛇行性向)을 알 수 있었다. 방향각(方向角) 및 방향편각(方向偏角)에 대한 autocorrelogram들은 일반적(一般的)으로 진동(振動)하면서 감쇠(減衰)하는 모양을 보였으며, 방향편각(方向偏角)의 자료(資料)를 가지고 자기상관계수(自己相關係數)와 spectra로 구한 사행파장간(蛇行波長間)에는 상관성(相關性)이 높은 선형관계(線形關係)를 보였다.
