An Estimation of NPS Pollutant Loads using the Correlation between Storm Water Runoff and Pollutant Discharge in a Small Urban Drainage Basin

  • Three purposes of this study are as follows : The first was the development of the extension method for the limited data observed in an urban drainage basin. The second was the analysis of the correlation between storm water runoff and NPS(non-point source) Pollutant discharge. The last was the calculation of the monthly and annual specific NPS loads using the established correlation. The selected model was the SWMM(Storm Water Management Model) developed by the US EPA(Environmental Protection Agency). As a result of this study, the best correlation between storm water runoff and NPS pollutants discharge was produced by the nonlinear correlation between runoff rate(mm/hr) and specific loads rate(kg/ha) for all pollutants studied : SS, COD, BOD, and TN. The best correlation through the analysis based on evently total mass was made by the linear correlation between the by the nonlinear correlation for CASE2. The NPS annual specific loads for the urban basin studed were 4,993 kg/ha/year for SS, 775 kg/ha/year for BOD, 3,094 kg/ha/year for COD, 257 kg/ha/year for TN, respectively. And the proportion of the NPS annual specific loads to the total annual specific loads were 41 % for SS, 13 % for BOD, 29 % for COD, and 21 % for TN.

GIS AND WEB-BASED DSS FOR PRELIMINARY TMDL DEVELOPMENT

  • TMDL development and implementation have great potential fur use in efforts to improve water quality management, but the TMDL approach still has several difficulties to overcome in terms of cost, time requirements, and suitable methodologies. A well-defined prioritization approach for identifying watersheds of concern among several tar-get locations that would benefit from TMDL development and implementation, based on a simple screening approach, could be a major step in solving some of these difficulties. Therefore, a web-based decision support system (DSS) was developed to help identify areas within watersheds that might be priority areas for TMDL development. The DSS includes a graphical user interface based on the HTML protocol, hydrological models, databases, and geographic information system (GIS) capabilities. The DSS has a hydrological model that can estimate non-point source pollution loading based on over 30 years of daily direct runoff using the curve number method and pollutant event mean concentration data. The DSS provides comprehensive output analysis tools using charts and tables, and also provides probability analysis and best management practice cost estimation. In conclusion, the DSS is a simple, affordable tool for the preliminary study of TMDL development via the Internet, and the DSS web site can also be used as an information web server for education related to TMDL.

간월호 및 부남호의 유입 오염부하량 산정 (Estimation of Pollutant Loadings from Watershed into Lakes of Ganwol and Boonam)

  • The water of rivers and lakes in Korea is the main sources for drinking, industrial and agricultural purposes. However, various pollutants washed-off from watershed area make worse and worse the water quality. Particularly, the changes of land uses in watershed area is the main pollutant sources in many cases in Korea, it is usually called to nonpoint pollution sources. In this reason, the Ministry of Environment are programing the total maximum daily load for four major large rivers in order to improve the water quality by controlling the watershed area. Therefore, this research was performed to estimate the total pollutant input from watershed areas to lakes of Ganwol and Boonam located in Chungnamdo. The AGNPS water quality model and monitoring were used to estimate the pollutant loading rates with unit pollutant concentration of each land use. The main landuse of the research area are forest, wet and dry paddy field and small urban area. The research shows that the pollutant sources in Ganwol and Boonam lakes are from the various landuses. In this manuscripts, the results will provide important informations for mitigating the pollutants to the lakes.

시간지연 추정을 통한 누수위치 식별 연구 (Time Delay Estimation for the Identification of Leak Location)

  • Leak noise is a good source to identify the exact location of a leak point of underground water pipelines. Water leak generates broadband noise from a leak location and can be propagated to both directions of water pipes. This sound propagation due to leak in water pipelines is not a non-dispersive wave any more because of the surrounding pipes and soil. However, the necessity of long-range detection of this leak location makes to identify low-frequency acoustic waves rather than high frequency ones. Acoustic wave propagation coupled with surrounding boundaries including cast iron pipes is theoretically analyzed and the wave velocity was confirmed with experiment. The leak locations were identified both by the acoustic emission (AE) method and the cross-correlation method. In a short-range distance, both the AE method and cross-correlation method are effective to detect leak position. However, the detection for a long-range distance required a lower frequency range accelerometers only because higher frequency waves were attenuated very quickly with the increase of propagation paths. Two algorithms for the cross-correlation function were suggested, and a long-range detection has been achieved at real underground water pipelines longer than loom.

  • 대기환경분야에 GSIS를 활용하기 위해서는 우선적으로 이러한 연속면적 성질을 지닌 대기오염이나 기후인 자를 비롯한 연속면(continuous surface)의 특성을 가진 환경인자의 공간분포를 도면화 할 수 있어야 한다. 이를 위해서는 몇몇의 한정된 지점에서 측정된 점관측(point observation)자료에 의존하여 전 지역의 분포를 추정해야 한다. 본 연구에서는 자동차에 의한 대기오염물질 발생현황을 실질적으로 파악하기 위한 조사ㆍ연구의 일환으로 서울시 전지역을 대상으로 실시한 서울시 교통센서스의 자동차 통행량 자료, 오염물질별 배출계수 및 GIS-T용 수치지도등의 자료들을 이용하여 오염물질 배출특성을 지역별, 항목별, 시간별로 가시화 할 수 있는 GSIS기법의 적용성을 검토하고자 하였다.

지속가능한 생활용 우수시스템 개발 사례 (A Case Study of Sustainable Potential of Rainwater System Development for Household Water Consumption in Nigeria)

  • Rainwater harvesting system (RWH) can provide a relief for the household and farmers especially in areas with intense water scarcity during the long lull of rainy season. However, much attention has not been given to this alternative water source in Nigeria. This paper estimates the per capita water demand for 1,950 inhabitants and rainwater potential in Ojonbodu Estate, Oyo State, Nigeria, using data from detailed questionnaires, water consumption calculator software, and 20-year rainfall data. The potential rainwater estimation was based on amount of precipitation, size of catchment and runoff coefficient. Consequently, using estimated values of $39420m^3$ and $6.5114{\times}10^7m^3$ for per capita consumption and potential rainwater respectively, the rainwater harvesting system was designed for rainwater collection, and storage. The harvested rainwater was $450, 000m^3$ with collection efficiency of 69.16 %, which exceeded the household water consumption requirement. Thus, the harvested rainwater was able to meet the estimated water demand of the Ojonbodu Estate households during the period of water scarcity.

건축물 설계현황 분석을 통한 국내 비주거용 표준건물의 설정에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Reference Building based on the Building Design Trends for Non-residential Buildings)

  • The Korean government plans to introduce the building energy performance standard which regulates the annual energy consumption of buildings. This paper aimed to set up the reference building from database based on the building design trends for non-residential buildings. We surveyed the design data of 435 non-residential buildings which were granted building permission from 2007 to 2011. And we conducted estimation on the heating & cooling load and the energy consumption of the reference building using ECO2 program. From results, the reference building of non-residential buildings was office building which had a total 7 floors and $20,838m^2$ gross floor area. And it suggests the design reference data of building envelope, HAVC, heat source equipment and lighting system for the reference building. The total annual energy use of the reference building was $151.9kWh/m^2yr$.

영상의 다양한 곡면 특성을 효과적으로 활용한 확대 영상의 화질 개선 기법 (A quality improvement scheme of magnified image using effectively the various curved surface characteristics of Image)

  • 본 논문에서는 원본 영상에 존재하는 가로축 방향과 세로축 방향의 단순 볼록 곡면 혹은 단순 오목 곡면 특성을 정밀하게 조사한 후, 다양한 곡면의 특성을 효과적으로 활용하여 실제 영상의 픽셀 값에 더욱 근접한 보간 값을 구하고 이를 사용하여 확대 영상을 생성하는 확대 영상의 화질 개선 기법을 제안한다. 제안 기법의 절차에 따라 구해진 보간 값은 실제 영상에 존재하는 단순 볼록 곡면, 단순 오목 곡면, 복합 곡면상의 값을 갖게 되기 때문에 실제 영상에 더욱 근접한 확대 영상을 생성할 수 있어 확대 영상의 화질이 향상된다. 제안 기법을 적용하여 확대한 영상의 PSNR 값이 기존의 기법들을 적용하여 확대한 영상의 PSNR 값보다 큰 것을 확인하였다.

하이브리드 철도차량 시스템의 전기-열 모델 기반 리튬이온 배터리 온도 추정 방안 (Electro-Thermal Model Based-Temperature Estimation Method of Lithium-Ion Battery for Fuel-Cell and Battery Hybrid Railroad Propulsion System)

  • Eco-friendly hybrid railroad propulsion system with fuel-cell and battery was suggested to reduce carbon dioxide gas and replace retired diesel railroads. Lithium-ion battery with high energy/power density and long lifetime is selected as the energy source at the battery side due to its excellent performance. However, the performance of lithium-ion batteries was affected by temperature, current rate, and operating condition. Temperature is known to be the most influential factor in changing battery parameters. In addition, appropriate thermal management is required to ensure the safe and effective operation of lithium-ion battery. Electro-thermal coupled model with varying parameter depends on temperature, and state-of-charge (SOC) is suggested to estimate battery temperature. The electric-thermal coupled model contains diffusion current using parameter identification by adaptive control algorithm when considering thermal diffusion effect. An experiment under forced convection was conducted using cylindrical cell and 18 parallel-connected battery module to demonstrate the method.

An empirical investigation of nuclear energy consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emission in India: Bridging IPAT and EKC hypotheses

  • The transition toward clean energy is an issue of great importance with growing debate in climate change mitigation. The complex nature of nuclear energy-CO2 emissions nexus makes it difficult to predict whether or not nuclear acts as a clean energy source. Hence, we examined the relationship between nuclear energy consumption and CO2 emissions in the context of the IPAT and Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework. Dynamic Auto-regressive Distributive Lag (DARDL), a newly modified econometric tool, is employed for estimation of long- and short-run dynamics by using yearly data spanning from 1971 to 2018. The empirical findings of the study revealed an instantaneous increase in nuclear energy reduces environmental pollution, which highlights that more nuclear energy power in the Indian energy system would be beneficial for climate change mitigation. The results further demonstrate that the overarching effect of population density in the IPAT equation stimulates carbon emissions. Finally, nuclear energy and population density contribute to form the EKC curve. To achieving a cleaner environment, results point out governmental policies toward the transition of nuclear energy that favours environmental sustainability.
