Many studies have been made on the masticatory and esthetic effects of prosthodontic treatments, but few on the restoration of pronunciation, especially in complete denture wearers. The purpose of this study is to provide a basis that could be of help to the complete denture wearers' speech adaptation by analyzing the influence of the palatal coverage upon the duration of consonants and vowels with the method of experimental phonetics. For this study, metal plates and resin plates were made for 3 male subjects in their twenties, who have good occlusion, and do not have speech and hearing disorders. Then 8 Korean consonants and 4 Korean vowels were selected, systemically considering phonetic variants such as the place and manner of articulation, lenis/fortis, mutual effect of each phoneme, etc. They were combined into meaningless tested words in the form of /VCV/, and were included in the carrier sentences. Each informant uttered the sentences 1) without the plate, 2) with the metal plate, 3) with the resin plate. The recorded data were analyzed through the waveform of sounds and spectrogram by using the program SoundEdit, Signalize, Statview 512+for the Macintosh computer. The duration of each segment was measured by searching for the boundaries between the preceding vowels and consonants, and between the consonants and the following vowels. The study led to the conclusion that. 1. With the palatal plate, the duration of all the tested words increased and the duration increased more with the resin plate than with the metal plate. 2. With the palatal plate, the duration of all the preceding vowels, consonants, and following vowels increased, but the temporal structure of the tested words was maintained. 3. As for the manner of articulation, fricative /s/(ㅅ) was greatly influenced by both kinds of palatal plates. 4. As for the place of articulation, alveolar sounds /d/(ㄷ), /n/(ㄴ) were greatly influnced by the kinds of palatal plates, and the velar sounds /n/(ㅇ), /g/(ㄱ) were influenced by the platal plates, but the kind of the palatal plates did not show any significance. 5. As for the lenis/fortis, lenis was influenced more by the kind of the palatal plates. 6. As for the influence of vowels upon each segment in the tested words, palatal vowel /i/(ㅣ) had greater influence than pharyngeal vowel /a/(ㅏ), and following vowels than preceding vowels.
With the media's shift into the digital era in the 2000s, comic book publishers attempted a transition into the new medium by establishing a distribution structure using internet networks. But that effort shied from escaping the parallel-page reading structure of traditional comics. On the other hand, webtoons are showing divers changes by redesigning the structure of traditional sequential art media; they tend to separate and allot spaces according to the vertical scroll reading method of the internet browser and include animations, sound effects and background music. This trend is also in accordance with the preferences of modern readers. Modern society has complicated social structures with the development of various media; the public is therefore exposed to different stimuli and shows characteristics of differentiated perceptions. In other words, webtoons display more relevant and entertaining characteristics by inserting sounds and using moving texts and characters in specific frames, while traditional comics require an appreciation of withdrawal and immersion like other published media. Motions in webtoons are partially applied for dramatic tension or to create an effective expression of action. For example, hand-drawn animation is adopted to express motions by dividing motion images into many layers. Sounds are also utilized, such as background music with episode-related lyrics, melodies, ambient sounds and motion-related sound effects. In addition, webtoons provide readers with new amusement by giving tactile stimuli via the vibration of a smart phone. As stated above, the vertical direction, time-based nature of animation motions and tactile stimuli used in webtoons are differentiated from published comics. However, webtoons' utilization of innovative techniques hasn't yet reached its full potential. In addition to the fact that the software used for webtoon effects is operationally complex, this is a transitional phenomenon since there is still a lack of technical understanding of animation and sound application amongst the general public. For example, a sound might be programmed to play when a specific frame scrolls into view on the monitor, but the frame may be scrolled faster or slower than the author intended; in this case, sound can end before or after a reader sees the whole image. The motion of each frame is also programmed to start in a similar fashion. Therefore, a reader's scroll speed is related to the motion's speed. For this reason, motions might miss the intended timing and be unnatural because they are played out of context. Also, finished sound effects can disturb the concentration of readers. These problems come from a shortage of continuity; to solve these, naturally activated consecutive sounds or animations, like the simple rotation of joints when a character moves, is required.
SBS [Healing Camp] seems like having a different sound usage from other entertainment programs. After content analysis, I found that [Healing Camp] uses much more music & sound effects than [Muhandojeon]. Music & sound effects of [Healing Camp] has functions of tautological informing, uplush of emotion or Ancrage, narrating or Relais. It is very similar to television subtitle. Positive uses of music & sound effects are expected to catch the attention of audience and to increase the ratings. But [Healing Camp] uses music & sound effects very positively and systematically and opens a new dimension of narratives.
Transparent type noise barrier is a desirable facility since it provides a secure view to drivers and passengers. However, reflection from this type of barrier could annoy dwellers on the sides of the road. To reduce reflection noise by transparent type barrier, modification can be made to the shapes on the front side and hence get effects by distortion of sound transmission. To achieve this, we have conducted simulation by which the effects of patterned screens of noise barrier on high-ways were investigated. The reduction effects of reflected sounds were evaluated for swelling, swelling with curved, rectangular and V-shaped screen type barriers, compared to the planar panel. The emitting noise was generated by 6-lane road and the patterned noise barriers had shown the reduction effects, especially in swelling and swelling with curved type for middle height dwellers, and the V-shaped screen type for higher elevation dweller. The swelling-type showed a decrease of 0.7~1.2 dB, performing the best diminution effect among the tested noise barriers.

Sound effects coming with appropriate tactile stimuli can strengthen its reality. For example, gunfire in games and movies, if it is accompanied by vibrating effects, can enhance the impressiveness. On a similar principle, adding the vibration information to existing sound data file and playing sound while generating vibration effects through haptic interfaces can augment the sound experience. In this paper, we propose a method to generate vibration information by analyzing the sound. The vibration information consists of vibration patterns and the timing within a sound file. Adding the vibration information is labor-intensive if it is done manually. We propose a sound detection algorithm to search the moments when specific sounds occur in a sound file and a method to create vibration effects at those moments. The sound detection algorithm compares the frequency characteristic of specific sounds and finds the moments which have similar frequency characteristic within a sound file. The detection ratio of the algorithm was 98% for five different kinds of gunfire. We also develop a GUI based vibrating pattern editor to easily perform the sound search and vibration generation.
Nanta means "tapping" using percussion instruments such as drums, which is the rhythm of Samulnori, a tradtional Korean music. Nanta speech rhythm intervention program was developed and applied for the children with limited speech sound production and investigated its effect. Nanta program provided audible stimulation, various sound loudness and beats, and rhythms. Nanta program consists of three stages : Respiration, phonation and articulation with the rhythm. Six children with language development delay participated in this study. Children were encouraged to explore sounds and beats and freely express sounds and beats. Along with the rhythm, children also were encouraged to produce speech sounds by increasing the length of syllables in mimetic and imitating words. A total of 15 sessions were conducted twice a week for 40 minutes per session. For exploring the effectiveness, raw scores from preschool receptive-expressive scales (PRES) and receptive-expressive vocabulary test (REVT) were obtained and compared before and after therapy. The results demonstrated that significantly improved receptive (p=.027) and expressive language scores (p=.024) in PRES and receptive (p=.028) and expressive (p=.028) vocabulary scores following intervention using Wilcoxon signed-rank test. These findings suggest that the nanta rhythm program can be useful for improving language development and vocabulary in children with limited speech sound production.

In this study, the relationship of images and sounds of the animations "Dots" and "Loops" which Norman McLaren animated with his Animated sound technique when he worked at Guggenheim museum at New York, are analyzed through the audiovisual analysis theory by Michel Chion, and through the theory of synchronism/asynchronism and parallelism/counterpoint by Siegfried Kracauer. For the results of the analysis, there are a few difference between "Dots" and "Loops" regarding the aspect of sound arrangement and expressive aspect of abstract animation. However, there are being of two main elements of sound, composing with monophony sound, making musical structure with sound effects, and the emphasizing of parallelism with synchronization bewteen images and sounds in common with both "Dots" and "Loops". In "Dots" and "Loops", there are close correlations between pitch of sound and arrangement/shape of image, between loudness of sound and size of image, and between length of sound and length/shape of image. The image and sound of "Dots" and "Loops" have equal relationship each other, rather than subordinate relationship according as image become sound and the sound become new image with the animated sound technique. "Dots" and "Loops" show tendency of minimal art and music video. Since these two films, and remind about the new approach to sound creation in today's animation production.
In this paper, we develop a vibration system which can generate diverse vibration effects in realtime by analyzing signals from the sound output of PC. This system is able to detect the occurrences of particular sounds in order to generate corresponding pre-programmed vibration patterns. It contributes to the improvement of the reality and the immersiveness of games and virtual reality applications. In addition, its advantage is to easily add vibration features to applications which were originally developed without consideration for vibration. Our system consists of an external DSP board for signal processing and a vibration pad which can be put on wrists. It is superior to other sound-driven vibration devices because its DSP board can detect more diverse sounds, has higher performance and does not interfere with PC. Also the wrist-wearable vibration pad is able to generate more realistic vibration than other mouse or joystick type devices.

This study was designed to report the clinical effects of oriental medical therapy on a patient whose irritable bowel syndrome did not improved under western medical therapy, Herbal medication, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy were applied to the patient for 12 days. The status and frequency of feces were checked and self-recognized symptoms (abdominal pain and bowel sounds) were checked to evaluate improvement. According to the above evaluation items, the treatment was beneficial. The status and frequency of feces became normal. Abdominal pain and bowel sounds ceased. The above results suggest that oriental medical therapy is beneficial for the patients with irritable bowel syndrome.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of sensation and sensibility from the rusting sound of silk fabrics. The mechanical properties and sound parameters were measured after recording the rusting sounds of 7 silk fabrics. Then, their relationships were analyzed through the evaluation of subjective sensation and sensibility and found a regression model for the sensibility from the mechanical properties. The adjectives of the sensibility were grouped into four: Elegant, Active, Tough, Modern. Soft and flexible fabrics were related with LPT negatively and induced elegant sensibility. And fabrics of the smoother and less changable to shear direction were related with LPT and Δf, and positively, and occurred active sensibility. On the other hands, rough, bulky, thick, and heavy fabrics were related with ARC and Δf, and induced with tough or modern sensibilities. About the sensibilities according to each fabric, STN8 was the most elegant, STN8-S was the most active, and TWL16 and STN16-N were the toughest.
