  • This paper proposes a new structural head-related transfer function(HRTF) model to produce sounds in a virtual environment. The proposed HRTF model generates 3-D sounds by using a head model, a pinna model and the proposed distance model for azimuth, elevation, and distance that are three aspects for 3-D sounds, respectively. In particular, the proposed distance model consists of level normalization block distal region model, and proximal region model. To evaluate the performance of the proposed model, we setup an experimental procedure that each listener identifies a distance of 3-D sound sources that are generated by the proposed method with a predefined distance. It is shown from the tests that the proposed model provides an average distance error of $0.13{\sim}0.31$ meter when the sound source is generated as if it is 0.5 meter $\sim$ 2 meters apart from the listeners. This result is comparable to the average distance error of the human listening for the actual sound source.

  • Studies on the ways to construct agreeable sound-amenity have been processed in Korea recently and Virtual Acoustics Field Simulation System (VAFSS) which is an active acoustics reproducing system has been made as a technique to realize the results of the study. This system catches the changes of surroundings and produce sounds which go well with the mood of the space. The fact that a man thinks a sound goes well with factors of the environment should be an individual evaluation. Thus, the standards to classify factors influencing the preference of the sound, which can be judged by the environment, are needed. This study suggests the standards of factors to provide agreeable sound for people according to changes of the time and other elements. Among the factors influencing environment, the temperature, the humidity and the wind were suggested as standards of discomfort Index and wind chin temperature. Besides, only the intensity of illumination has been chosen to estimate the intensity of radiation as a part of factors of the whether.

  • Purpose : The duration of speech segments reflects children's speech motor development. The purpose of this study was to determine whether segmental sound and word duration varies by age among preschool children. Methods : A total of 60 children aged 4~5 years participated in this study. Participants took the picture-naming test to produce single-word speech data. The duration of the consonant at the initial position of the word and the final position of the word, the voice onset time of plosive, the duration of the vowel following the initial consonant, and the duration of the word were measured. Results : As age increased, the duration of the initial consonant, the duration of the word, and the voice onset time decreased significantly. The main effects of age, manner of articulation, and place of articulation on the duration of the initial consonant were significant. The duration of consonants in the nasal sound and plosives and the duration of bilabial and alveolar sound differed significantly between groups. The main effects of age and vocal type on voice onset time were significant. The main effect of age on the duration of the consonant in the final position of word and on the duration of the vowel were not statistically significant. Conclusion : The results of this study showed that the duration of segmental sound and the word were associated with speech development between 4 and 5 years old. Accordingly, duration of the segmental sound and the word may serve as an acoustic cue as they reflect speech development and speech motor control maturity.

  • Sound localization algorithm usually adapts three step process: sampling sound signals, estimating time difference of arrival between microphones, estimate location of sound source. To apply this process in indoor environment, sound localization algorithm must be strong enough against reverberant and noisy condition. Additionally, calculation efficiency must be considered in implementing real-time sound localization system. To implement real-time robust sound localization system we adapt four low cost condenser microphones which reduce the cost and total calculation load. And to get TDOA(Time Differences of Arrival) of microphones we adapt GCC-PHAT(Generalized Cross Correlation-Phase Transform) which is robust algorithm to the reverberant and noise environment. The position of sound source was calculated by using iterative least square algorithm which produce highly accurate position data.

  • Unlike internal combustion engines, electric cars have little engine sound and very quiet, causing the following problems to occur. First of all, pedestrians are a threat to safety because they can't feel the car approaching. The driver is also unable to recognize how fast his car is driving at a certain speed. To solve these problems, electric cars should be artificially created and reused. This paper examines the problems of the Sampling engine sound currently being used and uses the engine sound to produce a sound engine sound for the solution. The sampling engine sound has some limitations in making natural engine sounds. To overcome this problem, we studied two methods of using software synthesizers. They found subtractive synthsizing and wavetable synthsizing, which compared wavetabe synthsizing with actual engine, sampling and subtractive methods to find the most similar to real engine sound. We found that data usage and production cost are more advantageous than sampling method and subtractive syndication method.

  • When the lateral dimensions of a duct is larger than or comparable to the wavelengths of Interest, higher order modes propagate in the duct. These modes will be radiated and produce noise. A number of sensors and actuators for control of radiating noise from the duct have to be incorporated with the number of modes which one wants to control. These considerations motivated the present study that considers a control system which has less microphones and control sources than required. In this work, by theoretical analysis, the control performance of such a kind of system is investigated in terms of sound-field variables and control system variables. The possible maximum and minimum value. mean and variance of residual acoustic potential energy are derived for the set of primary sound fields.

  • Ultra-fine fibers are spun by expensive fiber spinning technology using special spinnerets. Ultra-fine fibrous materials have attracted considerable attentions because of their potential applications as high performance wiping cloths, water absorbent sound proofing materials and moisture transfer sporting good. However, production expense of ultra-fine fibers is 5 to 7 times higher than general textile materials. The objective of this research is to develop cost-effective recycling process to produce multi-functional ultra-fine fibrous material in terms of the development of garnetting and carding machines for ultra-fine fibrous material waste and scrap. The efficiency of sound absorption for the recycled polyester nonwoven increased with decreasing length and thickness of component fibers, which was attributed to the reduction of air permeability. It is expected that high value and cost-effective textile products are developed using ultra-fine fibrous wastes and that sound proofing material and oil absorbent f

  • This paper presents the noise source identification of a car A/V system. There are two different kinds of noise sources noise generated by loading mechanism and rattle noise by externally forced vibration. A dynamometer has been made to produce stationary inertia to the loading mechanism of A/V system. Sound pressure spectra and sound intensity were measured by operating the dynamometer setup as various motor speeds, and the results were analyzed. A dominant rattle noise source about A/V system's components has been found by multi-dimensional spectral analysis. Residual spectrum method was applied for eliminating coherence between the vibration sources. In result, the dominant rattle noise source was identified by partial coherent output spectrum of individual vibration component.

  • Bekesy measured the sound transformation system of the middle ear 49 years ago. According to his reports, a ratio between the size of ear drum and the size of oval window is 17 : 1, and the lever function of the ossicles is physiologically 1.3 : 1. Therefore, the hearing might be aggravated to 27.5㏈ in the case of the vanishment of 3 ossicles. In 1952, Wullstein reported 5 types of tympanop-lasty and the fourth type among them was especially named for the sound-protection. The oval window is only exposed by the sound pressure and the round window is not exposed. According to the application by this idea, the post-operative hearing might be improved until 27.5㏈. Mean while, in 1942, Onchi verified through his experiment that the results of Bekesy's measurement was not completely conformed to Onchi result. Bekesy measured the sound pressure on the stapes plate of the oval window, on the other hand, Onchi measured the sound pressure on the surface of the perilymph of the oval window after removing the stapes plate(Fig. 1).(Figure omitted) The difference of their experiment is recognized that the impedance of the stapes plate exists or not (Fig. 1). Both Audiogrums are compared as Fig. 2. The result of IV type of tympanoplasty is success ful in 54% as the Table 1. (Table Omitted) The reason of unsatisfactory is caused by the thick and unmovable window-membrane and by the closing of air passage to the round window. The closing of the air passage to the round window is occurred by the adhesion between the grafting membrane and the surface of promontorium. In order to preserve this adhesion, I produce to transplantate the mucous membrane of the lip to the bone surface of tympanic cavity after removing the granulation tissue of the tympanic cavity and to form a membranous canal for the sake of air passage (Fig. 3). (Figure Omitted) The post-operative hearing by this method is shown as Fig. 4, 5. In other words, the post-operative sound pressure entered into the cochlea directly, by way of the oval window only, not by way of the round window, as a theorie of the sound protection. • Background and Objectives : It has been shown that the epilaryngeal tube in the human airway is responsible for vocal ring, or the singer's formant. In previous study, authors showed that in trained tenors, besides the conventional singer's formant in the region of ,5500Hz, another energy peak was observed in the region of 8,000Hz. This peak was interpreted as the second resonance of the epilarynx tube. Singers in other voice categories who produce vocal ring are assumed to have the same peak, but no measurements have as yet been made. Materials and Methods : Fifteen tenors, fourteen baritones, seven sopranos and five mezzo sopranos attending the music college, department of vocal music who could reliably produce the head and chest registers were chosen for this study. Each subject was asked to produce an/ah/sound for at least three seconds for the head register sound(tenors ; G4, barions ; E4 sopranos ; F5 and mezzosopranos ; C5) and for the chest register sound (tenors ; C3, baritones ; D3, sopranos ; D4 and Mezzosoprano ; A3). The sound data was analyzed using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT)-based power spectrum, Long term average(LTA) power spectrum using the FFT algorithm of the Computerized Speech Lab (CSL, Kay elemetrics, Model 4300B, USA). Statistical analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney test of the Statistical Package for Social sciences(SPSS). Results : For head register sounds, a significant increase was seen in the 2,200-3,400Hz region(p<0.05) and the Similar to the head register sounds, there was a significant increase in energy in the four trained singer group compared with the untrained group in the 2,200-3,100Hz region(p<0.05), the 7,800-8,400Hz region(p<0.05) for the chest register sounds. Conclusions : When good vocal production was made for the head and chest registers, an energy peak was observed near 2,500Hz, a frequency already known as the "singer's formant', in all subjects in the study group. Another region of increased energy was observed around 8,000Hz that had not been noticed previously. The authors believe this region to be the second singer's formant.
