  • Background and Objectives The compensatory articulation not only influences general speech intelligibility, but also prevents precise assessment of the velopharyngeal function. This study was performed to investigate frequently affected phonemes, prevalence and the characteristics of compensatory articulation in the patients with cleft palate having velopharyngeal insufficiency. Material and Method An archival review was taken on 103 cleft palate subjects. Their age ranged from 2.6 to 63 years (mean age of 9.8 years). They were grouped into two : preschool group (n=71) and older patient group (n=32). The prevalence and patterns of compensatory articulation were examined on oral high pressure consonants such as plosives, fricatives and affricates. Results : Compensatory errors were observed in $49.5\%$ of the subjects and were mostly glottal stops with the exception of 4cases who had pharyngeal fricatives in addition to glottal stops. The most frequently substituted phonemes were velar plosives and tense sound. There was no significant difference of prevalence in both groups. However, errors for bilabial and alveolar plosives were more frequently observed in preschool group. Conclusion High prevalence of compensatory articulation observed in both preschool and older age group indicates that their articulation errors tend to remain unless appropriate speech therapy is provided. To improve speech intelligibility of the patients with cleft palate having velopharyngeal insufficiency, it is advisable to address and correct the compensatory articulation errors in their earlier ages.

  • In this work, the effect of field-degradation of automotive polymeric interior parts on the squeak characteristics was studied for a number of used vehicles with various mileages and years of service. The purpose of this study was to characterize the squeak noise related with long-term degradation in service life. The characteristics of field-degraded polymeric samples are analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Complicated carbonyl spectra from FT-IR were deconvoluted into various carbonyls to trace field-degradation phenomenon. In addition, various mechanical tests, i.e. tensile test, hardness test as well as coefficient of friction test, were performed to analyze the variation in mechanical properties due to field-degradation. Squeak noise was measured and analyzed by frequency analysis. It was shown that the changes in the chemical structures of polymer due to field-degradation influenced the variation in mechanical properties, and squeak noise may worsen by increasing the squeak noise level in the wide frequency range. The results indicated that customer complaints regarding the squeak noise coming from used vehicles might be one of the important reliability issues because the increase in sound pressure level especially in the high frequency range could annoy drivers and passengers.

  • Crevices between window and window frame cause not only heat losses but also serve path to sound transmission and infiltration of fine dusts that are harmful to humans. There were many efforts in the past to eliminate these crevices but because of the windows' indispensable function of opening and closing, it was an unsolvable problem. In this study, a new type sliding window is developed by applying horizontally rolling wheels to implement a surface sealing which is excellent for enhancing air tightness. To evaluate the feasibility of the newly developed window, forces for opening and closing, durability and air tightness were testet according to Korean Testing Standards. Force for opening a 2000 N window is 30 N. It endured 100,000 cycles of opening and closing. Infiltration was $0.00m^3/(m^2h)$ for a pressure difference of 10 Pa. Since this window has few moving parts, it has favorable features of low cost and few breakdown.

  • This study compared and analysed ground vibration, size of underwater background noise in fish farms and underwater object noise of blasting and obtained ground vibration prediction equation through a regression analysis and correlation equation between underwater object noises in order to predict degrees of underwater noise in blasting and organize underwater noise control regulations. Before the study, when background noise of fish and shellfish farms with different conditions was measured, levels of background noise were different according to environmental characteristics of each farm. Ground vibration which causes underwater noise was measured to obtain a correlation equation between ground vibration and underwater object noise. Therefore, if underwater noise is predicted for each construction with a use of a correlation and permissible standards appropriate for each condition are applied for design and construction, financial loss from damages to fish and shellfish caused by development of insufficient technological and engineering logic can be prevented and successful construction with safety of underwater creatures guaranteed can be achieved.

  • The Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) is a nonequilibrium gas discharge that is generated in the space between two electrodes, which are separated by an insulating dielectric layer. The dielectric layer can be put on either of the two electrodes or be inserted in the space between two electrodes. If an AC or pulse high voltage is applied to the electrodes that is operated at applied frequency from 50Hz to several MHz and applied voltages from a few to a few tens of kilovolts rms, the breakdown can occur in working gas, resulting in large numbers of micro-discharges across the gap, the gas discharge is the so called DBD. Compared with most other means for nonequilibrium discharges, the main advantage of the DBD is that active species for chemical reaction can be produced at low temperature and atmospheric pressure without the vacuum set up, it also presents many unique physical and chemical process including light, heat, sound and electricity. This has led to a number of important applications such as ozone synthesizing, UV lamp house, CO2 lasers, et al. In recent years, due to its potential applications in plasma chemistry, semiconductor etching, pollution control, nanometer material and large area flat plasma display panels, DBD has received intensive attention from many researchers and is becoming a hot topic in the field of non-thermal plasma.

  • A multi-objective optimization of a regenerative fan for enhancing the aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance was carried out using an integrated fan design system, namely, Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$. The Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ was developed for non-specialists to carry out a series of design process, viz., computational preliminary design, three-dimensional aerodynamic and aeroacoustic analyses, and design optimization, for a regenerative fan. An aerodynamic analysis of the regenerative fan was conducted by solving three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations using the shear stress transport turbulence model. And, an aeroacoustic analysis of the regenerative fan was implemented in a finite/infinite element method by solving the variational formulation of Lighthill's analogy based on the results of the unsteady flow analysis. An optimum shape obtained by Total FAN-Regen$^{(R)}$ shows the enhanced efficiency and decreased sound pressure level as much as 1.5 % and 20.0 dB, respectively, compared to those of the reference design. The performance test was carried out for an optimized regenerative fan to validate the performance of the numerically predicted optimal design.

  • The vacuum die casting is a promising candidate of the stamping process for fabrication of fuel cell bipolar plate due to its advantages, such as precision casting, mass production and short production time. This study proposes vacuum die casting process to fabricate bipolar plates in fuel cell. Bipolar plates were fabricated under various injection conditions such as molten metal temperature and injection velocity. Also, according to injection velocity conditions, simulation results of MAGMA soft were compared to the experimental results. In case of melt temperature $650^{\circ}C$, misrun occurred. When the melt temperature was $730^{\circ}C$, mechanical properties were low due to dendrite microstructure. Injection velocity has to set at more than 2.0 m/s to fabricate the sound sample. When melt temperature, injection velocity (Fast shot), and vacuum pressure are $700^{\circ}C$, 2.5 m/s and 30 kPa respectively, sample had good formability and few casting defects. Simulation results are mostly in agreement with experimental results.

  • There is a kind of abnormal noise known to come from the stick-slip mechanism induced by frictional impulses during the sliding of two polymeric plates. In this work, quantitative analysis of abnormal noise is carried out based on experimental results. Some combinations of polymer plates, such as an ABS base-plate contacted to ABS, PP, MIPS, and POM plates, which are well-known materials used in home-appliances, are studied to obtain the best combination of polymer plates in order to reduce the abnormal noise. For the experiments, a rig for the test was set up and a methodology was proposed. In addition, the effects of the surface roughness of the plate, the normal loading force, and the relative sliding speed between the two contact plates were evaluated in order to understand the reason for the abnormal noise. Through this experimental work, the optimal combination of materials was ABS/POM system to reduce the noise in real industrial applications.

  • Typical hydrophones in line array sensors for early detection of covert underwater targets can measure only sound-pressure-magnitude with the limitation of being unable to identify the direction of an incoming wave. In this study, a thickness shear mode vibrator was proposed as the main component of an inertia type vector hydrophone to measure both magnitude and direction of acoustic signals from targets. The equation to analyze the output voltage of the vibrator to an external force was derived, and the validity of the equation was verified through finite element analysis of a PMN-PT single crystal vibrator. The analysis results from this study will be utilized in the future for the design of inertia type vector hydrophones made of thickness shear vibrators.

  • Friction Stir Welding (FSW) was developed, it is successfully commercialized in the field of transportation vehicles. In this study, we analyzed the defects of A2024-T4 alloy using non-destructive test of radiograph, ultrasonic, electrical conductivity and destructive test of microstructure observation, tensile strength. As the results of experiment, mapping of defects was obtained. Fine defects which were not detected in radiograph test were detected in ultrasonic test, and it enabled efficient detection of defects by difference of sound pressure and color. The values of electrical conductivity was decreased as amount of defects was increasing. Joint efficient of defect-free weldment that found by non-destructive and destructive test was 91%. Therefore it was considered that non-destructive test of friction stir welded A2024-T4 Alloy was an efficient method.
