  • This paper aims at dealing with the communication of Korean gong sound. It is based on 'music-spirit theory' of Han-Gi Choi and Mead's 'symbolic interactionism', and does this by interpreting the message of gong sound that is mentioned in Korean literature. The gong sound brings out the message of symbolizing evaporation of Korean people's joy and regrettable matters in the playing yard by regulating of breathing according to the steps. By the novel "Gong Sound" of Sun-Tae Moon Korean gong sound has a message of people's joy, anger, avarice, anxiety and sorrow. In Jeong-Rae Jo's novel "Arirang" the Korean Gong Sound includes a message of evaporation of people's regret and raises the national spirit during the Japanese Imperialism. By Jeong-Ja Yoo's collection of poems, "The sound of flower breathing carried by gong sound", the Korean gong sound carries a message of a roar of spirit and breathing of the spring flower. In conclusion, the Korean gong sound is a sublime sound of sky which carries the message of symbolizing evaporation of people's joy and regrettable matters through the sound communication in the open space, and awakes us to a method of breathing with sky.

  • A common treatment for tinnitus rehabilitation is to use a device called a sound generator to continuously supplying the sound stimuli. The devices usually provides a sound called white noise, or pink noise, which are common in nature. In this paper, we developed a mobile system for tinnitus diagnostics and therapy using Android mobile applications. The first step for tinnitus diagnostics is detecting an exact tinnitus frequency of the patients, therefore we provide a bark scale tinnitus detection algorithm for fast and accurate diagnostics. Also, the system can provide various stimuli sounds including white noise, pink noise, brown noise, nature sounds, and binaural beats. Also we provides the therapeutic functions through questionnaires to solve existing problems of the patients.

  • Recent development in multi-channel surround is emerging in various formats to provide better stereoscopic and sound effects to consumers in recent broadcasting. The ability sound localize the sound sources in space is most considerable design factor on multi-channel surround system for human earing perception model. However, this paper propose the change of the sound localization according to the spacing of the speakers, which is not covered in the existing research focus on sound system design. Presently the sound system uses the position and number of the speakers to localize the sound. In the multi-channel surround environment, the proposed design uses the sound localization is caused by the directional characteristics of the speaker, the distance between the speakers and the distance between the listener and the speaker according to the directivity is required. The proposed design is simulated using virtual measurement with MATLAB simulation environment and performances are measured.

  • In order to visualize the transfer of sound waves, we performed real-time processing with the fast operating system of GPU, the Graphics Processing Unit. Simulation by using the method of the discrete Huygens' model was also implemented. The sound waves were visualized by varying the real-time processing, the reflecting surfaces within the two-dimensional virtual sound field, and the states of the sound source. Experimental results have shown that reflection and diffraction patterns for the sound waves were identified at the reflecting objects.

  • Two twin microphones may produce particular patterns of binaural directivity by time delays between the twin microphones. The boundary element method (BEM) was used for the simulation of the sound pressure field around the KEMAR head model in order to quantify the acoustic head effect. The sound pressure onto the microphone was calculated by the BEM to an incident sound pressure. Then a planar directivity pattern was formed by four sound pressure signals from four microphones. The optimal binaural directivity pattern may be achieved by adjusting time delays at each frequency while maintaining the forward beam pattern is relatively bigger than the backward beam pattern. The simulation results were verified by the experimental measurement.

  • A speaker is a system which produces sound through electromechanical operations. It transforms electronic signals into audible sound signals. Almost all speakers are three dimensional. These days, many mobile electronic devices such as mobile electronic devices have become smaller and thinner. A problem with this miniaturization, however, is that the volume of speakers has also decreased. In contrast to conventional three dimensional speakers, we have invented a new type of two dimensional flexible speaker by utilizing the reverse piezoelectric effect.

  • This paper suggests an algorithm that can estimate the direction of the sound source with three microphones arranged on a circle. The algorithm is robust to microphones' gains because it uses only the time differences between microphones. To make this possible, a cost function which normalizes the microphone's gains is utilized and a procedure to detect the rough position of the sound source is also proposed. Through our experiments, we obtained significant performance improvement compared with the energy-based localizer.

  • GMM has been one of the most popular methods for scream sound detection. In the conventional GMM, the whole training data is divided into scream sound and non-scream sound, and the GMM is trained for each of them in the training process. Motivated by the idea that the process of scream sound detection is very similar to that of speaker recognition, the UBM which has been used quite successfully in speaker recognition, is proposed for use in scream sound detection in this study. We could find that UBM shows better performance than the traditional GMM from the experimental results.
