  • The carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOH) and functionalized with isatin derivative (MWCNT-isatin) have been used as efficient adsorbents for the removal of lead (Pb) from aqueous solutions. The influence of variables including pH, concentration of the lead, amount of adsorbents and contact time was investigated by the batch method. The adsorption of the lead ions from aqueous solution by modified MWCNTs was studied kinetically using different kinetic models. The kinetic data were fitted with pseudo-first-order, pseudo-second-order, and intra-particle diffusion models. The sorption process with MWCNT-COOH and MWCNT-isatin was well described by pseudo-second-order and pseudo-first-order kinetics, respectively which it was agreed well with the experimental data. Also, it involved the particle-diffusion mechanism. The values of regression coefficient of various adsorption isotherm models like Langmuir, Freundlich and Tempkin to obtain the characteristic parameters of each model have been carried out. The Langmuir isotherm was found to best represent the measured sorption data for both adsorbent.

  • Bioavailability study was conducted to elucidate the relationship between sorption/desorption and biodegradation of sorbed phenanthrene in seven different soils. Mineralization kinetics was determined for phenanthrene-sorbed soil slurries inoculated with Pseudomonas putida (ATCC strain 17484). Two biodegradation models were used to fit mineralization kinetics; (i) a first-order degradation model and (ii) a coupled degradation-desorption model. The biodegradation rates were in order of vermicompost >Bion peat > 50% organoclay > Pahokee > blank (no soil, medium only) > montmorillonite > Ohio shale. The mineralization rate constants increased as desorption-resistance of phenanthrene increased. Among the tested sorbents, active biodegradation of phenanthrene was observed in vermicompost and Bion peat. Biodegradation in these two sorbents exhibited little lag time and a high maximum mineralized capacity. The role of sorption/desorption in bioavailability of phenanthrene sorbed in soils was discussed.

  • Using gravimetry, we have studied the diffusion of water into sulfonated polystyrene ionomers. Diffusion coefficients were calculated from Fick's equation. The water sorption was found to be dependent on the ion content (3.6-11 mol%) and the nature of the cation (H, Na, Li, or Zn). The sorption kinetics indicates a slight deviation from Fickian behavior. We used the analytical solution of Fick's equation to evaluate the concentration profiles, which are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Recently, considerable researches have been focused to find out inexpensive sorbents. for removal of heavy metals in aquatic environments. In particular, various natural materials including geologic media have been attractive. In order to evaluate the applicability of the scoria taken from the Jeju island, Korea, to remove Zn(II) from aqueous solutions, the kinetic sorption experiments were performed in this study. The batch-type kinetic sorption tests were carried out under different conditions, such as different initial Zn(II) concentration, particle size of the scoria, and sorbate/sorbent ratio. The results indicated that the removal of Zn(II) by scoria increased with decreases in initial Zn(II) concentration, particle size of the scoria, and sorbate/sorbent ratio. However, the sorption capacity of the scoria decreased with increasing amount of the scoria. The sorption behavior of Zn(II) onto scoria seemed to be mainly controlled by cation exchange.

  • Water vapor sorption by sodium alginate-based films may result in swelling and conformational changes in the molecular structure and affecting the water vapor barrier properties. Sodium alginate film specimens were dried in a vacuum freeze dryer and their moisture content was determined by an air-oven method. The water vapor absorption was determined at two different levels of water activities (0.727 and 0.995) and at three temperatures (10, 20, and $30^{\circ}C$), and kinetics were analyzed using a simple empirical model. Reasonably good straight lines were obtained with plotting of 1/($m-m_0$) vs 1/t. It was found that water vapor absorption kinetics of sodium alginate films were accurately described by a simple empirical model. The rate of water vapor sorption increased with increase in temperature and it showed temperature dependency following the Arrhenius equation. The activation energies varied from 49.18$\sim$149.55 kJ/mol depending on the relative humidity.

  • This research examines the feasibility of using laboratory-synthesized nano scale zero-valent iron particles to remove arsenic from aqueous phase. Batch experiments were performed to determine arsenic sorption rates as a function of the nano scale zero-valent iron solution concentration. Rapid adsorption of arsenic was achieved with the nano scale zero-valent iron. Typically 1 mg $L^{-1}$ arsenic (III) was adsorbed by 5 g $L^{-1}$ nano scale zero-valent iron below the 0.01 g $L^{-1}$ concentration within 7min. The kinetics of the arsenic sorption followed pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. Observed reaction rate constants ( $K_{obs}$) varied between 11.4 to 129.0 $h^{-1}$ with respect to different concentrations of nano scale zero-valent iron. A variety of analytical techniques were used to study the reaction products including HGAAS (hydride generator atomic adsorption spectrophotometer), SEM (scanning electron microscopy) and TEM (transmission electron microscopy). Our experimental results suggest novel method for efficient removal of arsenic Iron groundwater.r.

  • Exfoliated graphite was found to sorb selectively a large amount of heavy oil, about 80 g of heavy oil floating on water per 1 g of exfoliated graphite, which is highly possible to be applied to recovering spilled heavy oil. Sorption capacity, selectivity and kinetics of exfoliated graphite were reviewed. The possibility of recovery of heavy oil from exfoliated graphite and recycling of both recovered heavy oil and exfoliated graphite was also discussed. Its sorption performance was compared with other materials which were reported to show sorption of heavy oil.

  • Arsenic at abandoned mine sites has adversely affected human health in Korea. In this study, the feasibility of using cationic surfactant-modified activated carbon (MAC) to remove As(V) was evaluated in terms of adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, and column experiments. The adsorption of As(V) onto MAC was satisfactorily simulated by the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm model. In column experiments, the breakthrough point of AC was 28 bed volumes (BV), while that of MAC increased to 300 BV. The modification of AC using cationic surfactant increased the sorption rate and sorption capacity with regard to As(V). As a result, MAC is a promising adsorbent for treating As(V) in aqueous streams.
