  • Objectives : The dried root of Sophora flavescens Aiton have been used to treat patient with skin diseases such as eczema in Eastern countries. S. flavescens can clear away heat and dry dampness and purge sthenic-fire from the liver and gallbladder. Recently, anti-allergic effect of S. flavescens has been reported. However, the effect on skin condition of contact dermatitis still remains unknown. Thus, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of S. flavescens on contact dermatitis. Methods : In order to investigate the effects of S. flavescens (methanol extract of S. flavescens, MESR) on skin condition, the contact dermatitis was induced in mice skin by using 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrofluorobenzene (DNFB). As the effective endpoints, skin thickness, skin weight, histopathological change were checked. In addition, effects on skin lesion, body weight and spleen/body weight ratio were also investigated. Results : Topical application of MESR ($500{\mu}g/day$) lowered skin thickness (P < 0.05) and skin weight (P < 0.05), respectively. MESR-treated group showed diminished spongiosis and immune cell infiltration in skin tissues compared to those of non-treated control group. The inhibition of skin lesions was also observed in MESR-treated group. In addition, MESR did not affect body weight gain and spleen/body weight ratio in contrast with those in dexamethasone-treated group. Conclusion : These data suggest that Sophorae Radix could improve skin lesion of contact dermatitis. This indicates the possibility for Sophorae Radix to be used to patients with skin diseases such as contact dermatitis.

B. adolescentis was showed a good growth by Sophorae flos, Phellodendri cofex, Mori cortex radicis, Aurantii nobilis pericarpium, Angelicae gigantis radix, alone, and two mixed combinations were composed of Paeonia japonica and Theae foiium, Epimedii herba and Angelicae gigantis radix, Paeonia japonica and epimedii herba, Atractylodis rhizoma alba and angelicae gigantis radix, and three mixed combinations were oraganized with Theae folium, Paeonia japonica and epimedii herba, Theae folium, Beiamcanda chinensis and Paeonia japonica, Theae foiium, Astragaii radix and Mori cortex radicis, and four mixed combinations were formed with Seiamcanda chinensis, Angelicae gigantis radix, Epimedii herba, Theae folium, and Angeiicae gigantis radix, Epimedii herba, Paeonia japonica, Theae folium, and Epimedii herba, Paeonia japonica, Sophorae flos, Theae folium. The best four mixed combination for the growth of B. adolescentis was mixture of Epimedii herba, Paeonia iaponica, Sophorae flow and Theae foiium, which promoted 2.6 times than that of control, and its antioxidative capacity was also 5.6 times higher, and the ratio of elimination of hydroxyl radical was more than 80% in each dilution rate. As these combinations of natural products will activate some parts of body, they may be applied to pharmaceuitcal applications, functional foods, antiaging tea, also expected to promote useful entero bacterial growth for fermentative beverage bearing multifunction.

  • Trichomonicidal activity of thirty methanolic herbal extracts used in traditional medicine in Korea was evaluated. Trichomonas vaginalis was used as experimental model, and anti-Trichomonas activity was determined over cultures of the parasite in TYM Diamond medium. Six methanolic extracts such as Acanthopanacis Cortex, Agrimoniae Herba, Pulsatillae Radix, Sanguisorbae Radix, Sophorae Radix, and Torilidis Fructus showed more than 50% trichomonicidal activity at the concentration of 200 g/ml. These extracts were further fractionated into n-butanol soluble and aqueous phases. Except for Acanthopanacis Cortex, all of n-butanol soluble phases showed potent trichomonicidal activity, while none of aqueous phases exhibited trichomonicidal activity.

  • We previously reported that the ethtyl acetate(EA) soluble fraction of Sophorae Radix(SR) water extract had the preventive effects against cardiovascular anaphylaxis elicited in experimental animals. In this study, we tested the anti-anaphylatic effects of the nine kinds of EA soluble subfractions in animal models such as Langendorff heart and anesthetized rats. These results were obtained as followed ; Among nine kinds of SR EA soluble subfractions, N10-16-2 and N10-16-9 fractions have an effects improving cardiovascular anaphylaxis in guinea pig Langendorff hearts. In passively anesthetized rats, N10-16-2 and N1 0-16-9 fractions of SR EA soluble subfractions have an effects improving cardiovascular anaphylaxis. N10-16-2 and N1 0-16-9 fractions of SR EA soluble subfractions inhibited the decrease of histamine release induced by compound 48180 and A-23187 in rat peritoneal mast cells. These results suggest that N10-16-2 and N10-16-9 fractions of SR EA soluble subfractions involve anti-anaphylactic molecules in cardiovascular system.
