  • The effect of surrounding air velocity on the soot deposition process from a diffusion flame to a solid wall was investigated in a microgravity environment to attain in-situ observations of the process. An ethylene($C_2H_4$) diffusion flame was formed around a cylindrical rod burner in surrounding air velocity of $v_{air}$=2.5, 5, and 10 cm/s with oxygen concentration of 35 % and wall temperature of 300 K. Laser extinction was adopted to determine the soot volume fraction distribution between the flame and burner wall. The experimental results show that the soot particle distribution region moves closer to the surface of the wall with increasing surrounding air velocity. A numerical simulation was also performed to understand the motion of soot particles in the flame and the characteristics of the soot deposition to the wall. The results successfully predicted the differences in the motion of soot particles by different surrounding air velocity near the burner surface and are in good agreement with observed soot behavior in microgravity. A comparison of the calculations and experimental results led to the conclusion that a consideration of the thermophoretic effect is essential to understand the soot deposition on walls.

  • The characteristics of soot near the soot inception point for an ethene-air flame was carried out in a WSR (well-stirred reactor). The new sampling tool like the temperature controlled filter system was introduced to minimize the condensation during sampling. The new analysis tools applied include the real time size distribution analysis with the Nano-DMA, particle size by transmission electron microscopy, C/H analysis, g filter analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis using both non-oxidative and oxidative pyrolysis. The WSR can generate young soot particles that can be collected and examined to gain insight into inception. For the current conditions, soot does not form for ${\Phi}$=1.9, inception occurs at or before ${\Phi}$=2.0, and inception combined with soot surface growth and/or coagulation occurs for ${\Phi}$=2.1. The filter samples for ${\Phi}$=1.9 are composed of volatile compounds that evolve at relatively low temperatures when heated in the presence or absence of O$_2$. The samples collected from the WSR at ${\Phi}$=2.0 and ${\Phi}$=2.1 are precursor-like in morphology and size. They have higher C/H ratios and lower organic percentages than precursor particles, but they are clearly not fully carbonized soot. The WSR PAH distribution is similar to that in young soot from inverse flames.

  • From the analysis of fly ash, which contains unburned carbon, collected from the coal-fired Yong Hung power station, most particles are turned out to be hollow cenosphere and agglomerated soot particles. The sooting potential from six coals used in the plant were investigated with CPD model. The results show that the higher potential presented to Peabody, Arthur, Shenhua coals rather than other coals. It is necessary to measure the coal flow rates at each coal feeding pipe for four burner levels since they affect the extent of mixing of soot with oxidant, in turn, the oxidation rate of soot particles. The unbalance in coal flow rate was found in several coal pipes. We successfully reduced unburned carbon in ash by increasing the excess air and changing the SOFA yaw angle.

  • In our previous study, it was proven that the mean size and the total number concentration of carbon soot particles emitted from a $C_2$H$_4$ normal diffusion flame decreased when a DC corona was discharged to pin-pin electrodes. In this work the effect of AC corona discharge on soot emission was investigated and compared with that of DC corona discharge. For the pin-pin electrodes the size of soot particles and the number concentration decreased by the AC voltage. There were only slight changes in size distribution with frequencies, while the magnitude of applied voltage was constant. When the electric field was applied to plate-plate electrodes, the size and the number concentration also decreased with the applied AC voltages. For applied voltages above 2kV the effect of frequency increase on the soot emission was effective.

  • New method and device for the on-line measurement of soot concentration in a diesel engine oil are proposed, where the measurement principle is based mainly on attenuated internal total reflection. Various laboratory tests of the detector were performed mainly with carbon black particles of different contamination levels. It was found that the proposed detector could be well used to monitor oil deterioration due to soot contamination. Operational range of the detector was found from 0 to 5 mass percentage of soot content. Test results with water and fuel dilution showed that these effects were not remarkable. However, adsorption of carbon black particles to a measurement surface was considered to be a critical problem in the new detector. Effects of particle deposition onto the interface was experimentally evaluated with the oil temperature and turbulence and discussed throughout this work.

  • The effect of fuel mixing on soot structure with methane, ethane, and propane to ethylene-base counterflow diffusion flames has been investigated by measuring the volume fraction, number density, and particle size of soot by adopting the light extinction/scattering techniques. The experimental result showed that the mixing of ethane and propane in ethylene diffusion flame increased soot volume fraction while the mixing of methane decreased. As compare to the ethylene-base flame, the diameters of soot particles for mixture flames are slightly smaller. While the soot number densities for the mixture flames are much higher. Thus, the increase in the soot volume fraction can be attributed to the appreciably increased soot number density by the fuel mixing.

  • The effect of corona discharge on soot emission was experimentally investigated. Size and number concentrations of soot aggregates were measured and compared for various voltages. Regardless of the polarity of the applied voltage, the flame length decreased and the tip of flame spreaded with increasing voltage. For the experimental conditions selected, the flame was blown off toward the ground electrode by corona ionic wind. When the negative applied voltage was greater than 3kV(for electrode spacing = 3.5cm), soot particles in inception or growth region were affected by the corona discharge, resulting in the reduction of number concentration. The results show that the ionic wind favored soot oxidation and increased flame temperature. Number concentration and primary particle size greatly increased, when the corona electrodes were located the region of soot nucleation or growth(close to burner mouth).

  • Two different approaches, namely two-step deposition process and Bias-Enhanced Nucleation (BEN) technique have been examined for deposition of high quality diamond thin film on polycrystalline Ni which has low chemical activity with the carbon neutrals provided from the $CH_4/H_2$mixtures. A two-step deposition process, consisted of pre-deposition of soot layer at lower temperatures and subsequent deposition at higher temperature condition, has been developed to deposit diamond layer directly on Ni substrate. Diamond particles were observed after deposition step at $925^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours and those particles seem to be nucleated from the soot layer pre-deposited at lower temperatures ($810^{\circ}C$). Diamond particles of a substantial size were found on Ni substrate after biasing -220 V for 10 minutes and subsequent deposition for 2 hours while no diamond particles were observed under the conditions without applied bias.

  • Characteristics of PAH and soot formation in coflow diffusion flames of methane, methane, propane, and ethylene have been experimentally studied to investigate the temperature and fuel structure effect on soot formation. PAH and soot images were acquired by applying PAH LIF and LII techniques, respectively and temperature was measured using R-type thermocouple. Direct photographs of soot particles have also been taken by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) through a thermophoretic sampling. Comparison of PAH and soot formation between the aliphatic fuels has shown the importance of fuel structure effect in diffusion flames.
