  • The minimization of maximum DPF wall temperature and the fast Light-off during regeneration are the targets for the high durability of the DPF system and the high efficiency of regeneration. In order to predict transient thermal response of DPF, one-channel numerical modeling has been adopted. The effect of the ratio of length to diameter(L/D), cell density, the amount of soot loading on temporal thermal response and regeneration characteristics has been numerically investigated under two different running conditions: city driving mode and high speed mode. The results indicate that the maximum wall temperature of DPF increase with increasing 'L/D' in 'High speed mode'. For 'City driving mode', the maximum wall temperature decreases with increasing 'L/D' in the range of $'L/D{\geq}0.6'$. The maximum temperature decreases with increasing cell density because heat conduction and heat capacity are increased. It is also found that the effect of amount of soot loading on light-off time is negligible.

  • Particulate matters(PM) have bad effect on the health. We carried out measurements of diesel PM under $10{\mu}m$ diameter from a HSDI diesel engine with a diesel oxidation catalyst(DOC) by using the ELPI. This paper compares the two results of the smoke level and the PM level of masses and numbers. We also investigated the effect of the DOC. Under high speed and load, HSDI diesel engine exhausts much masses of particulate matters over 100nm diameter, and a number of PM from 7 to 100nm diameters at the same condition. DOC could reduce the total mass of the PM. However, the DOC could increase the number of ultra fine PM. Before light-off of the soot, the DOC absorb the PM and the DOC oxidize the PM after light-off temperature. The fine PM could be made during the oxidation. Therefore, the advanced DOC is needed to reduce the number of the fine PM.

  • Thermal regeneration means burning-off and cleaning-up the particulate matters piled up in DPF(diesel particulate filter), and it requires both high temperature $(550\~600^{\circ}C)$ and appropriate concentration of oxygen at DPF entrance. However, it is not easy to satisfy such conditions because of the low temperature window of the HSDI(high speed direct injection) diesel engine(approximately $200\~350^{\circ}C$ at cycle). Therefore, this study is focused on the method to raise temperature using the trade-off relation between temperature, oxygen concentration, and the influence of many parameters of common rail injection system including post injection. After performing an optimal mapping of the common rail parameters for regeneration mode, the actual cleaning process during regeneration mode is investigated and evaluated the availability of the regeneration mode mapping through regenerating soot trapped in the DPF.

  • The catalytic combustion of particulate matter (PM) is one of the key technologies to meet emission standards of diesel engine system. Therefore, we herein suggest Ag loaded $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ perovskite web catalyst. They were produced by the electrospinning method. FE-SEM, EDS mapping, XRD, XPS were studied to investigate the crystal and morphological structures of loaded Ag particles and $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ perovskite web catalyst. Following the catalytic soot oxidation, we found that the Ag loaded $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ perovskiteweb catalyst showed the higher catalytic activities (e.g., $T_{50}=490^{\circ}C$) than the only $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ perovskite web catalyst (e.g., $T_{50}=586^{\circ}C$). Thus, this finding suggests that Ag loaded $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ perovskite web catalyst can be a promising candidate for enhancing the soot oxidation.

  • The characteristics of particulate matters (PM) from an exhaust gas for conventional and low temperature diesel combustion (LTC) in a compression ignition engine was experimentally investigated by the elemental, thermogravimetric analysis. Morphology of PM was also studied by the transmission electron microscopy. PM for LTC shows that it contains more volatile hydrocarbons, which can be easily evaporated than conventional regime. PM for LTC is comprised of smaller primary particles.

  • Understanding the mechanism of carbon oxidation is important for the successful modeling of diesel particulate filter regeneration. Carbon oxidation characteristics were investigated by temperature programmed oxidation(TPO) method as well as constant temperature oxidation(CTO) with a flow reactor including porous bed. The activation energy of carbon oxidation was increasing with temperature and had two different constant values in the early and the later stage of the oxidation process respectively in TPO experiment. Kinetic constants were derived and the reaction mechanisms were assumed from the experimental results and a simple reaction scheme was proposed, which approximately predicted the overall oxidation process in TPO as well as CTO.

  • The test was conducted on an 8000cc heavy-duty turbo-charged heavy-duty diesel engine on which continuous regeneration DPF was installed in order to investigate regeneration characteristics fur DPF and engine performance under conditions of standard (430ppm) or ultra low sulfur diesel (50ppm) and the results were compared with each other. Exhaust emissions, CO, HC, NOx, PM and soot were investigated carefully and tested under D-13 and D-3 modes.

  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulates over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method, The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions such as temperature and $O_2$ concentration were investigated. The partial substitution of alkali metals into A site in the $LaMnO_3$ catalyst, enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of carbon particulate and the activity was shown in the order: Cs > K > Na. For the $La_{1-x}Cs_{x}MnO_{3}$ catalysts, the catalytic activity showed the maximum value with x=0.3 but no more increase on the catalytic activity was shown with x > 0.3. For the $La_{0.8}Cs_{0.2}MnO_{3}$ catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Ni increased the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with an increase of $O_2$ concentration, however, no more increase in the catalytic activity was shown with $O_2$ concentration > 0.2. The introduction of NO into reactants showed no effect on the catalytic activity.
